Pick 14

I recon the Hill band wagon is bigger because we missed Bradley Hill 2nd time round and picked up Forster instead. It'd be nice if it didn't occur twice after the Hill/Rich debate landed in our favour. I'd be great if he did make it to our 2nd pick...
There is also the year long media parade chasing our interstate first round picks for contract extensions.

Im thinking either Collier-Dawkins or Caldwell will be the steals of the draft. If we choose one of them over Hill/Sturt/etc I wouldn't be mad

I was a tad surprised by Smallwood’s testing. He’s not some super athlete playing football, but he tested slower than I expected. I do think he plays faster though. Michael Walters tested even slower.

If you’re looking at small forwards later in the draft, I’d back him over someone with nothing but speed to offer.

Chris25 where do you think Ned McHenry rates amongst the small forwards this year? His highlights video against Vic Metro looks pretty good despite some missed shots.

The lightning-quick small forward, who is a second cousin to Fremantle brothers Stephen and Bradley Hill, showed his potential as a 17-year-old last year, when he put in an exciting display for his state against Vic Country at Docklands.

PHANTOM FORM GUIDE Cal Twomey's latest update

Hill missed the final round of this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships after being suspended for a dangerous tackle during the carnival, but he played for Perth’s reserves side in the back end of the season before succumbing to the second shoulder issue that required an operation.

It meant he was unable to test at the Combine.

WhyTheyShouldPickHim.jpg

Hill is creative, classy and cool under pressure. He runs the 20m sprint in 2.82 seconds so has genuine pace that separates him from the rest. He can jump high and take spectacular grabs and he has a very good goal sense.

Hill’s skills are tight: he goes for kicks that others wouldn't try to hit and makes them, and isn't afraid to try things. When he's near the ball stuff happens, and that's why Hill will appeal to clubs searching for a skilful crumber who can also impact in the air.

At Colts level this season Hill averaged 20 disposals in seven games, including a starring performance of 25 disposals and three goals against East Fremantle late in the season before he was upgraded to the reserves competition.

Hill’s size means that there aren’t many positions that he can play. There’s no getting around the fact the speedster is small – he measured in at 175cm and 64kg at the Combine – so he could take some time to be ready for the AFL.

His injury issues mean he hasn’t been able to spend as much time in the gym to build his body and strength.

PlaysLike.jpg

He doesn't have the same tenacious approach to tackling as Daniel Rioli, but Hill can generate activity in the front half given his speed and agility a little like the Richmond forward has in his three seasons at AFL level.

DraftRange.jpg

Hill started the year viewed as a potential top-five selection, but now seems more likely to be drafted later in the first round or early in the second round.

INDICATIVE DRAFT ORDER Your club's picks

BottomLine.jpg

Hill has a highlights package that plenty of other players would yearn for. He's an eye-catcher who plays with a cheeky take-them-on attitude.

Of all the smaller players, I think McHenry is perhaps the one with the best chances of playing as a midfielder. He's good in close and has elite endurance, also a good player to have kicking it inside 50. So I guess I'd rate him lower down as a small forward.

Stocker and Woodcock.

I like both but wonder if Woodcock is a little early.

Chris25

I'd have thought it's a bit early for Woodcock, as good as he is. But all KM would have seen of him is his stats, so you can understand having him as a second rounder.

Amazing. Bit of risk reward bit this guy could be the finishing touches to our forward line..jeff farmer.minus the douche.

I think you want the fast, skillful players to be dickheads. It makes them better players. Like a dog that hates everyone except their family, totally unsafe for public - a human version of that dog with speed and skill is perfect for footy. Would die for his team, KNOWS he is the best and requires that standard of himself. Goes and goes and goes.

The dickheads who don't back it up with action, leave them on the draft table.

Watch Hawthorn take him and make him the next Cyril Rioli. We have a chance at a guy who is damaging with every possession, end up taking some guy who racks up 25+ disposals at u18s and ends up another Sheridan vanilla type. I can't believe anyone that watches football thinks that being so small means he can't play AFL. If he was crap in the air I'd maybe agree but he's got a great leap and great set of hands in the air.

If we had pick 5ish still I'd be all for an elite midfielder prospect like Bailey Smith. At #14 we will 100% regret not taking Hill if we pass on him. We have some quality mids coming through our NGA - we won't be short of really good young mid prospects in a couple of years. It's why I'd still love us to get O'Reilly with one of our picks. We can put the finishing touches to our forward line for a decade this draft.

Hawks will need some magic to get Hill at their first pick this year (53 I think).

Hawks probably wont pick him up with their draft pick allocation

I definitely don't want a vanilla first pick or just a safe bet due to testing and stats.

With our forward draft hall I'd rather pick Hill or someone truly dynamic who would be damaging as a mid to small forward/midfielder. The reward long term could really help our forward line.

Rankine would make Freo an extremely hard team to defend against in our forward half but he won't be available so why not the next best thing?

I agree, I think this guy is a real X factor ,kicks both feet ,can take a high flyer. He really is much the same as Walters except a lot faster. He makes things happen, takes the game on,never keeps still always trying to create. I would definitely snap him up at 14. Likewise I also like O'Reilly , I think he is in the mould of the Mcgovern brothers ,strong contested mark. Lock 'em in

Id take Ian Hill if available at 14 - but with all hype surrounding the top 6-10 and and still have very talented players around from 11 to 15. Taking that in account Id take Hill at 14 unless the worlds gone mad and a top 6-7 player makes it through.

This is where I may have a lot of people disagree with me but pick 14 is an easy pick, you take Hill or a top 6-7 player if available somehow. But from pick 16 onwards every club has their own identified "steal" of a player who they'll take and I truly believe we will get some serious talent at 31; and when I say talent I think we will all be shocked at who is still available at 31.

Its this gut feeling I've had since reading the mock drafts from various "experts" or journos after the trading period finished. Pick 31 will turn out to be a very bloody pleasant surprise.

I promised myself I'd stay away from draft talk so I could go in not expecting anything and avoid any disappointment but now I'm going to be shattered if we don't take Hill

He sounds like just what we need and I really don't think 175cm is that bad for a small fwd/outside mid as long as they have express pace and/or top-end skills and he appears to have both in spades

Twomey talks about Hill briefly in his latest podcast. Same reasoning as most of us have talked about with getting some talls and him complimenting them well. Also said he's the guy in the draft that could run the length of the field and nobody could catch him. I'd say the only person who might catch him is Jason Carter ;) Later someone asks if he is like Walters, he said more like Dan Rioli.

Mentions O'Halloran and (Ely) Smith as potential options @ #31 (also mentioned Duursma - not as convinced about him personally). I'd love either of these guys. Reckons O'Reilly is late/rookie pick - would be ideal if we managed to pick him up as a rookie.

I doubt O'Halloran gets to Pick 31. I feel like he'll be an Eagle next year

I know for me I lose the ability to count when I'm at the lungs burning point of a run, anything over about four and I start getting anxious that I've miss counted. I'd like to see how the combine athletes test when calm and when their body is diverting resources.

That would make it a great measure for identifying elite players.

Was a good read....but i could not help targeting this gem about your self - May I suggest you use your fingers to get past four and thereby resolve the anxiety :D
