Pick 14

Seen we've been linked to Butters a few times. Just watched his highlights, really classy ball user, wins his own ball but also runs on the outside, and most of all he is a beautiful kick. Would be very happy if we landed him at 14.

I think wins his own ball is a stretch - has a low CP%. Agree with the rest.

Think he is a definite risk if unable to win his own ball at AFL level. Even Hill (who is 6cm shorter) had a significantly higher CP% at the champs. I also think Hill is a better tackler.

Is a lovely kick though.

The big question next Thursday night is this:

  • Round one starts at 4pm WST
  • I finish work at 4pm WST
  • It will take 25 min for me to get home, fix a bourbon and coke and switch on PC.
  • Will this be enough time to see Freo's pick? Or, knowing how the AFL drags things out, will I have time to drive to Widgiemooltha and back before heading home?
These are complex issues.

Easily enough time. Gillon’s intro plus they are allowing 5 minutes per pick. Plus top 10 presentation

agree
they will do all they can to stretch it out.
there will need to be quite some time (are those you quoted, freodog accurate or guesses?) as there is the chance of trading picks.
plus probable bids for Blakely and maybe Thomas before our pick.

If they haven't been bid on I hope we do.

Not only are they allowing the 5 minutes, they are actually enforcing it. So each pick is 5 minutes even if they only need 1 second.

So at say pick 16 (earliest we will pick), would probably be around 5:30pm WST

Christ.. i cant believe they are enforcing the 5mins. No wonder the First Round drags out for 2 hours.

If they are enforcing 5mins per pick it would be nice to have an exact schedule (pick by pick) so I can go do something else and just switch on at the exact times our picks come up :)

Yeah but half the fun is throwing empty beer cans at the TV when the player you wanted gets picked bofore Freos pick. I plan to watch the whole thing.

My guess is they are enforcing 5 mins for to satisfy broadcast rights. It's going to drag on sooooooo long. I suppose on the plus side we'll probably get to see a few highlights, a bit of their history and maybe a brief interview with the draftee and family.

I wonder if the 5 minute thing is because once a club puts in their pick, the other clubs then have the remaining minutes to panic trade to get that player off them.
Haha that would be fun, but it’s purely for broadcasting and advertising. Imagine if round one was all over in 45 minutes! They don’t enforce the 5 mins for the second round onwards. Otherwise they would be there forever!

OK I admit I haven't been paying much attention to the draft until today but I have just sat here for a while in the air conditioning with a frothy, given it some thought, some more thought and still only came up with only one question - can anyone give one legitimate reason why we wouldn't take Ian Hill if he is available at 14?

Whilst I can probably make arguments for other players, I can't really make any against Hill.

No doubt our recruiters probably rate somebody else higher but hard to predict with limited vision and only BF analysts.

I concur

The only reason I can think of is that he might not be the best available talent :p

But yeah, I agree. We have addressed a lot of our weak areas and outside class is still something we can/should add to.

Picking him makes sense for so many different reasons.

They may rate someone higher, but it would be marginal imo unless someone slides significantly. Our pick is within Hill's draft zone and it wouldn't be like we would be reaching for him. Speed, skills, scoring.

If Stocker was still there I'd think about grabbing him. Then I'd think again about how perfect he'd be for Freo.
But then I'd still take Hill first.

Just makes sense.
