I dont think you are stupid so pick 18 for Pearce - I don't think so.

No thanks I'm alright.

IS there a source to this rumour? ;)

Pick 18 is too much for Pearce. Maybe 34 or 50 plus Bell?

But I'm not sold on him. Had a great first year but seems to have gone backwards. Would be another small body who doesnt look like getting any bigger.

I doubt it.

There will be either a very good midfielder or a KPF worth the punt on waiting for us at pick 18.

Mids that could still be there;
Duncan, Christensen, Gysberts, Chrichton, Moore, Bastinac, Jetta.

Talls that could still be there;
Panos, Vardy, Griffiths, Carlisle.

Limited talls and no depth in this draft but the top 20 are actually quite good.

There are several players who appear to be available come trade time. However, it has become increasingly difficult to get trades through. We need to be realistic that clubs may put players names up for trade, but actually getting them across the line is another thing. That being said I would definately consider some of the players being pushed. We have a great young group, however I think we have some issues around the 24-27 bracket. All the sides in the top 4 have traded very well to get experienced strong bodied players onto there list that have helped in their push up the ladder.

Of the players touted, I would be happy for the club to seek a trade.

McKinley- Rumours that he want's to come back to Melbourne. Genuine Full Forward, Victorian boy and a massive upgrade on Newton. Can play and at a great age to get. Would give us another target and allow Watts to develop as a centre half forward.

Ebert- Got some serious talent but has fallen away this year. However would be worth a look and could be a player that adds something in our forward line until we develop more KPP. Really think he could have a Medhurst type resurgannce in a new environment.

Pearce- If we could work a trade for him (not pick 18) I would be happy to have him on our list. Lightning quick, elite foot skills and a game breaker. With the players we have and continue to draft, he could fit well in our system and give us a genuine game breaker.

Kornes- Elite AFL player. Would be great to have his hardness, training level and shut down ability at the club. Just a quality player. However would have to give to much up I think and not suited to where we are in our development

The port players are interesting with Dean's involvement at the club in the past. It may give us a genuine shot at winning the service of one of them. Also having pick 1 in the PSD gives us a massive leverage boost in being able to get a trade pushed through.

I think we need to draft best available with our first 2 picks. After that I think the picks are expendable, however we would have to get something good for pick 18.

The key thing about all of the players listed is they would all walk into our best 22. Lets not keep our head in the sand and think they wouldn't. It all depends on what we have of trade value, and what we are prepared to give up.

Note: Source was on SEN. Was announced on The Run Home by SEN's Adelaide corrospondent

We have to go after Steven Salopek with pick 18 + Bell.
He's a gun midfielder with good experience a d is only 24 yo. And if we got him with 18, I'd happily grab butcher with pick 2. :thumbsu:

Why do people keep throwing Bell out there - he's 25 next year and still playing for Casey unable to break into the wooden spooners!? No value whatsoever.

I agree with you that Salopek would be a reasonable option for us if the trade was right though. Im a little torn whether to throw up pick 18 though as he'd be 28 or 29 by the time we are moving up.

Port are certainly floating some players on the open market.

In any case, I would be interested in Pearce. Yeah, he's a little soft, but we have plenty of hard midfielders and not enough who possess skill and speed. A change of scenery may also provide a significant boost to his career.

The difficult thing may be putting a deal together. 18 is too high, 34 probably not enough. If we could provide a depth player in an area of need and pick 34, we may be able to get something done there.

I'd be more interested in Boak.
Will be a freak! Originally from Torquay. Might be able to get him home.
With Lade gone we could offer up #18 & PJ??
Adding Boak, Scully & Butcher :D:thumbsu:

Just bring on Round 1! I'm already on a bit of a semi!

Agree Cannons. The concern I have is the player they will wan't, I am positive is Jamar. Off limits as far as I am concerned, the Russian. However I would give them Paul Johnson and Pick 34. That cover the need for a ruckman and a pick. However I doubt that would be sufficient for Port. You never know but doubt it

Mckinley is 184cm. Hardly a KPP. Green could do the job without any trade costs. Pass.

If Ebert came in a Medhurst price and they took our offloads in either Newton, PJ, Bell etc Yes but they won't so Pass.

Pearce. Pick 18 is fair IMO. Touch and go if i want to keep the pick or not.

Kornes is the heart and soul of that club. Says a lot about Port offering up someone that actually gives a damn.

Well actually he did break into our seniors after he returned from injury- then he broke his shoulder too meaning his season was over.

Tho I dont think he's worth much- they might take him as a sweetener. Emphasis on 'might'.

I never thought I would agree, but Jamar is certainly a player I think the club needs to retain. A great tap ruckman, he is now starting to show that he can offer something around the ground as well.

Johnson and 34 would be a good deal for us, but as you say, Port may not be so inclined to agree to it.

a deal involving pick 18 + a player (bell/pj) to get salopek or pearce would be a massive win for us IMO as it would a) allow us to get butcher plus a quality mid in salopek/pearce and b) offload some deadwood that is surplus to our requirements, allowing us to be more active in the draft.

If danyel pearce came to melbourne i would be over the moon, probably even more so than if we got salopek as his big problem at port is that he constantly gets the number 1 tag and gets zero support form his teammates who are reknowned downhill skiiers.

If he was getting the number 1 or 2 tag at melbourne he would either get protection from mids like jones, sylvia, moloney and it could also free davey from getting the number 1 tag.

With this all being said a deal like this is highly unlikely and i feel port supporters would much rather pearce or salopek than pick 18 in the draft

Agreed mate... the Russky is undoubtedly a vital part of our team now, I would say...

Completely agree. I wouldn't trade any of our top 3 picks. We do however need to consider ways of improving our list outside of just the draft. If we can bring established AFL players to the club, we would be negligent if we don't look at it. We need to find gems from recyled players as well as the draft. Look at every club in the top 4. They all have improved their list through the trade table. We need to have a multi faceted approach to improving tthe football club.

I think you are underselling McKinley. If we could get him for a pick 34 I think that would be worth it. Forget his size, he is a genuine FF. Robbo wasn't tall but was an elite AFL forward. The kid is a very strong lead up player. Could be a decent option whilst we wait for Watts, Jurrah etc to develop

Picking up Pearce with pick 18 would be a massive win for us IMO. This was taken from the Port Website.
"The lightning-quick on-baller/forward had a solid year in 2008, finishing equal 10th in the best and fairest. Provided plenty of drive and run from the middle, finishing second at Port in kicks and running bounces and fourth in disposals, but also worked hard defensively, finishing fourth in tackles. His ability to break the lines makes him a valuable part of the Power midfield."

In 2009 he averaged 20.5 disposals and played every game. Personally I think he would thrive at Melbourne given the number of indigenous players we now have. I also agree that he would free up other players such as Davey and looks like genuine goal kicking midfielder. We already have plenty of inside, tough midfielders but are looking for someone to finish off their hard work with quality lace out delivery into our forward line. Whilst any player we pick up with our pick 18 will be good, Pearce is already years ahead of them and already a NAB rising star winner. All that said I don't think there is any chance port would give him up for pick 18.

The mere fact Port are hinting at a clean out says a lot about their list.

Ebert is a 1 dimensional forward who gets shut down too often and does not offer enough in modern football.

Pearce is a frontrunner who likes working in free space and receiving. Port's gameplan has been based on this since before '04 and if they are considering letting Pearce go then that is saying something. Very over rated.

Chad Cornes is finished and Kane Cornes is starting to show the fatigue of carrying the team, wouldn't touch either considering what Port would be after.

Make no mistake, Port are a very streetwise club and when they say the game is up for players they are usually correct. They lack hardness and accountability and if we offer anything better than pick 34 for any of their slops I will spew.

Boak is about the only Port player I would consider and Salopek would come at too big a cost to be worth getting him.

port kept dropping Salopek.. why do we want him again?

would take pearce cause he is still young and has only been slightly tainted by port, another year there and it could be too late for him... he would grow well in our team

we should try and steal boak (like carlton stole c.johnson) and get him back to vic via per season draft

Carlton didn't steal Johnson, we didn't want to give him 2 years and Carlton were prepared to give him 2 years so we let him go into the PSD.

bails didnt want him to leave, carlton lured him with $$$ and promises of success.. i say we lure boak with $$$, promises of success and a move to vic

If Bailey didn't want him to leave he would have given him the 2 year deal he was after, instead only offering him one which was the right decision.

It would be near on impossible for us to land Boak.

mate, i thought bails gave johnson a rocket when he was leaving the club, saying that if he didnt want to play for the MFC he could get the f out now
