Our biggest problems by far this year have been:
(1) Clearances
(2) Getting the ball inside 50.
If we're ever going to be a good team, we need to DOUBLE our stats in both of these. It's not a marginal improvement, we need to go from by far the worst side in the AFL to one of the best.

Scully, Trengove and Butcher may well all be stars in a few years, of roughly equal value. But we can only have two of them, and we have to pick the two that will add most to our current team.

Butcher as a big, strong, pack crashing FF - Jonathon Brown

As much as I want Butch to go to Melb, he's nothing like Johno Brown.

I see a lot of Kozi in Butch, and we all know how good Kozi can be..

Butch is a bit more consistent though I reckon.

Not solid like Browny, he's got that Tall/Gangly attack on the footy (not unco though)

Kozi is the best AFL comparison i can think of right now.

I like the thought of having a twin tower forward line with watts and butcher, watts will be a lead up CHF so we do need someone with size close to goals to either take a strong mark or bring the ball to the ground...will it be Butcher or another key position player in the draft like Panos or Talia or will it be someone like martin...who knowsssssss

I think it all depends on how much better trengove will be than butcher in the years to come, if its a only a small margin they will go for butcher if its going to be large trengove is our man...lets just hope one of the other KPF's are available at pick 18.

Good post D. I think there's enough to worth with with either of Carlisle, Panos, Griffiths or Talia and I think at least one of them will be still there at 18. Butchers role is more important, however from what Ive seen I think Trengove is significantly better than Butcher - although Butcher is very good.

Ive got the faith in BP to get it right though so if he picks Butcher I will still be wrapped.

However a lot of posters here seemingly don't look at any footage,they just buy into here-say and conjecture of other posters,creating opinions on opinions and thus a game of whispers which gets more bent as it goes on.

Butcher on the other hand is the missing link in our forward line, a big bodied, strong marking FF who can bring the ball to ground and take the number 1 defender. Although tall and athletic Jurrah is probably our best crumming forward, add to this Wonna and the pace of Maric and we would have the most dangerous small forwards around Watts, Bate and Butcher.

There is so much undiscovered talent running around in Victoria in the midfield that will get drafted late, but there is no KPF’s like butcher in Australia.

Butcher is a quality prospect and would be great for the forward line but you seem to think quality mids are a dime a dozen.

If quality midfielders can be easily found late in the draft, tell me how many quality midfielders has played for MFC in the last 15 years.

Exactly I think some people are thinking about needs rather than who is better. To me that is what is debatable, who is/will be the better player. And when you have players of two positions comparisons will be hard to make.

Melbourne have a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a very formidable, even unstoppable, forward line & I think we have to take it.

How many times this year have these players played in the midfield? Morton has played lose on the half back & kicked 3 of his goals playing as a forward pocket. Maric has not played at all in the midfield & Petterd may have playe a little but I can't remember it this year.

You can use statistics to prove anything 80% of people know that.

In 2007 Goals kicked by Geelong mids:

Ablett: 30 goals 26 Behinds - total 56 scoring shots
Bartel: 18 goals 8 Behinds - total 24 scoring shots
Ling: 28 goals 6 Behinds - 32 total scoring shots
Chapman: 30 goals 15 behinds - 45 scoring shots

The forwards that you spoke of:

Mooney: 67 goals 38 behinds – 115 scoring shots
N Ablett: 34 goals 18 behinds – 52 scoring shots


So if we want to look at Geelong’s premiership year it shows us just how important their midfield was & those who rotated through to have that ability to put on a decent score.

Looking at their two power forwards they were not as dominant as you may think. They had a total of 167 scoring shots to a combined midfield of 157 scoring shots not including those who rotate through the midfield.

If you include Johnson as a part time mid/part time forward then you can add to the midfield:

Johnson: 46 goals 33 behinds - 79 scoring shots

Other scoring from mids in 2007:

Corey: 7 goals 9 behinds - 16 total scoring shots
Selwood: 7 goals 8 behinds - 15 scoring shots
Enright: 9 goals 5 behinds - 14 scoring shots

I’m not trying to make a case for Trengove but the statistics show the importance of having a midfield that can score heavily.

Why hasn't Melbourne had any Quality midfielders in the past 15 years? I won't talk about the last 15 but I will talk about the last 10 years. Due to Melbourne’s continuous up and down seasons and consistently making the finals we only ever really had 1 pick inside the top 20, which makes it very hard to select such quality midfielders. Along with this comes a little luck, for example selecting Scott Thompson and Luke Molan with high picks, Thompson is a quality midfielder who went home and we all know what happed to Molan. The only other midfielders we have taken inside the top 20 are Bell, Sylvia, McLean, Jones, Dunn, Morton, Grimes, Blease and Strauss. With another Full preseason and assuming they are all fit next year I believe that Sylvia, McLean, Morton, Grimes and Blease will be all quality up and coming players and hopefully Jones, Dunn and Strauss continue to improve and can contribute to the team. Maybe not brownlow medalist but we have plenty of quality up and coming midfielders.

[FONT=&quot]The reason I shy away from Trengrove is because he has being playing seniors for Strut which gives him a massive advantage for the U18 carnival. This may sound contradicting but basically after playing against men it would be easier for him to shine against boys in the U18’s carnival, while he may be a good player, that’s all he may ever end up being. Many people this year criticized teams for overlooking Daniel Rich as he slipped to pick 7 and the Lions. Apparently one of the reasons behind this is because they believed his potential wasn’t as high as they players who went before him. Although he has had a great season, they believe that is as good as he will ever be, but believe the likes of Watts, Hill and Yarren will turn into superstars in a few years. Obviously superstar midfielders aren’t that easy to come by, that’s why there is only 1 Chris Judd and 1 Gary Ablett, but can anyone guarantee that Trengrove will be this good? Atleast with Butcher we know we will have a tall marking option deep in the forward line, worst case scenario he takes away the number 1 defender, and brings the ball to ground for our small forwards.[/FONT]

Kosi is the closest I can think of currently but he reminds me a bit of Brendan Gale when he used to play forward for Richmond.

I'll leave it up to BP and the FD. If they want to improve on clearances and Inside 50's, in my opinion Trengove should be drafted. If they don't think Watts, Jurrah, Bate, Sylvia & Green & co. won't be enough in the forward line, draft Butcher.

I'd go Trengove or Morabito for pick #2.

The more I think about it the more I am not fussed. We need both type of players. If you add either Butcher or Trengove to our side it has a much better balance to it and is a massive improvement on what we currently have. The important thing I feel is what we do with 18

If we take Butcher we need to draft a
- Bastinac, Christenson, Gysberts, Moore etc

If we draft Trengove we need to take
-Carlsisle, Griffiths, Vardy, Fitzpatrick

My prefernce is for Trengove. I really like him as a player and he is so suited to the modern game and offers us great flexibility. However I would completely understand if BP went the other way

Watching the game last night Crows vs Bombers it showed that how important a good key forward is. To have a strong target is crucial to success and to have the likes of watts and butcher would be a good pair. Even if only one made a great impression its a gamble you cn take. You hope that the recruiters have another midfielder in their sights that can be taken with a later draft pic. MF / KPP is a good combo. We jsut dont want to be like other clubs and bag the club for maybe picking up someone that may take longer to develop. Hodge / Judd was a good example to me .. now I would say they would be very equal in what they offer both clubs.
