Opinion Pick #4 Prediction Thread

Wouldn't say it's all that interesting - everyone has been pumping up the Wines/Viney show for weeks. Wasn't until the last few days that it changed with the news GWS was going to select O'Rourke and Plowman.

Maybe I kind of remember her starting the pump up which makes sense as she handles all the draft stuff for the Age

Pretty interesting that she has Grundy slipping to pick 20. Dunno how he slips that far, was just a week ago that he was all but locked in at 3. If GWS actually pass on him 5 times i'm gonna laugh pretty hard at SOS.

Yes indeed. Would be interesting if they passed with pick 14, but it might depend on Menzel being available at pick 12... If he is they may prefer a KPD in Corr at 14.

GWS need another ruckman. After Giles they don't have many options at all, so I really doubt Grundy will slide too far.
As for us I'm not that fussed who we draft. Haven't watched/read much about the draftees, although Wines and Toumpas both sound like good players and after reading the article on the MFC site about what they look for when picking a player, I'm confident we'll get a solid young gun in. Just hope we can develop our top picks properly these days.

What I'm struggling to get my head around is why GWS would pick O'Rourke over Toupmas if they're essentially going to play a similar role and Toumpas has been talked up as the better prospect

Toumpas has been injured, maybe that's why.

They might just see O'Rourke is a better fit with what they already have than Toumpas. If there was something really wrong then we would be passing also, but I highly doubt that's the case.

Sounds like Toumpas is pretty much a lock for us at #4. Interested to see where the rest fall and if we can get some handy players who slide to our later picks. VERY interested in where Garlett falls also, sounds as though alot of clubs have been scared off and there is a small chance he may go undrafted, although you would think someone would take a punt if he was to slip THAT far down the order.

you mean like say, pick 48?

Yeah didn't mean it from a sinister point that there is something wrong (i.e. injury) but just seems strange. Both quick, both goal kickers, both describe as outside polish.

Strange at the death knell they'd chhange their mind on Toupmas

Wouldn't be surprised if it's just media talk to spice up a boring(ish) draft with GWS holding the first 3 picks and they go with Toupmas anyway

Ideal would be:

1 Whitfield
2 O'Rourke
3 Wines
4 Toumpas

Wines to sign 2 year deal with GWS then return to his beloved Dees :D

I reckon O'Rouke has a better attacking game than Toumpas, He is quicker, Bursts out of packs easier, breaks the lines better, has a better kick on him and kicks more goals, Toumpas is rated high in all those areas too, Toumpas though is a better contested ball winner, has a better defensive side to his game(better tackler) and a bigger body and is more AFL ready. O'Rouke is a bit softer which is why I don't think he is in Melbourne's calculations, we want players with a harder edge which Toumpas has that over O'Rouke easily, Wines certainly has that over anyone in this draft.

Ah ok, makes sense then - thanks

Don't profess to actually know the ins and outs of each player - they just reade very similar on paper (Toumpas / O'Rourke)

Id be happy to take a punt at 48, if he make it down that far of course...seems as though the reward could be massive if we can straighten up his attitude

Wasn't there also a Chris Yarran from WA in this year's draft? Thought there was always the 2 small WA forwards, in Garlett and Yarran.
