Pick #50: Troy Davis
Snoop said:
Key position player from the Falcons who could play a variety of roles. Hasnt been discussed a great deal and would be an outside chance for mine or someone that was taken on development potential. Certainly has all the athletic attributes to get folk excited. Tall, runs like the wind, could easily play a tall flank and probably play on talls and smalls.

Tall defender with frightening speed who prides himself on contested marking and spoiling more fancied opponents. His coaches liken him to Brian Lake in his ability to read the flight of the ball in the air.

Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style: Brian Lake
Range: 50-rookie
Why: Very speedy defender, who is strong overhead, and good at beating his direct opponent. Physically well built but would be great if he grew just those few cm more. The Western Bull Dogs have an aging defence so Davis could be a nice addition.

Bio: Tall defender who is blindingly fast for someone of his size. Has strength and can take a hanger when required as well.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
A tall backman and key player who usually plays on the opposition's key forward.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Brian Lake - my coach at Geelong says I resemble him. I like to be seen as a strong defender who doesn't get beaten.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Contested marking, beating my opponent and reading the play to shut down my opponent.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Fitness, speed/agility, kicking efficiency on both feet, quicker decision making, cleaner with my hands both on the ground and in the air.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Hawthorn - half my family barracks for Hawthorn and the other half for Collingwood. I have barracked for them all my lift.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Dad and Brendan McCartney. Dad has always told me what I need to improve and Brendan has taught me how to play the game, when to attack from defence and how to beat my opponent.

A redhead from Jordie McKenzie territory it seems. Watch his video on afl.com.au and he looked pretty good. Good to have another red headed defender named Troy on our list.

Obviously either this year or next we needed to add a key defender in case of injury and to pension off Warnock. Will take a few years but looks to have the physical capabilities required.

From MFC:
_____

Bio: Tall defender who is blindingly fast for someone of his size. Has strength and can take a hanger when required as well.Big body defender who is strong in the contest. Is real quick and consistently got up on fwds and spoiled well. Reads the play pretty well and has a purpose when defending. Clean mark and below knees. Hard nut who will compete and not be overawed by the occasion. Country lad with a hard edge. Agility is good.
At AFL level: Could play on the monsters in time and also on the lead up mid quick fwds.

His bio and highlights package look all right, so why was he such a low pick?

Everyone's highlights look good, that's why they're named as such. I could've made a video of myself playing kick to kick in Year 12 and you'd wonder why i didn't go top 20.

A few more cms growth would be handy and still possible as he's only 18.

On paper i'm starting to like the possibilities of this bloke. With him and Cook we more or less have added some book ends. To have a defender with both speed and size could really take the pressure off the others and exploit some of the slower opposition tall forwards.

I noticed in his bio it says he's extremely fast, well built and can play on Talls and Smalls . It just screams James Frawley in terms of player type. Not saying the guy will anywhere near as good as I rate Frawley as the best young tall defender in the comp but its obvious that we are drafting player types that fit into the fast, dynamic and versatile game plan that Bailey and co are building towards.

Looks pretty good to me. He'll be good insurance for our backline, and if he comes along better than expected and pushes out Rivers or Warnock then it's a bonus.
