What people fail to realise is that draft picks arent the be all to end all. Its a bit like catching fish; there are plenty out there that taste just as sweet. ( eg Look at what Reilly has to offer)

Accolades and congratulations right across across the board Id say.
I half expected Gary Ayres to refer to the "venue rigging" when interviewed last night but he let the scoreboard tell the story.

Malthouse is full of crap. After the trade was done, KG and Cornesy interviewed Carey on radio and Cornesy did ask the question about how some clubs said that they wouldn't trade this player and wouldn't give away draft picks where as crows never really bulked at that. Carey's response to that was "I really wouldn't want to give away trade sectrets and things like that but with all the clubs that I have spoken to have told me exactly the opposite, so what they say in media and what they say for public consuption is very inaccurate" I have qouted this because I have this interview on tape. Now Mick comes out and says pies wouldn't want to trade 1 draft pick let alone 2. PATHETIC

I saw the Malthouse interview where he did the sour graping about Carey as detailed in the article. It made me very angry because who in hell is he to make judgements publicly on what other clubs do with their drafts or trades!!!

Other clubs might well ask why they gave up their 1st round draft pick for Woefulwoden when they sadly need a ruckman of at least Ben Marsh calibre rather than the losers they have.

Shut your face Malthouse and get your own house in order!!

This is a bit serious.

Malthouse is a genius in every aspect and the mind game stuff is just one of them.

Maybe it's just sneaky deflecting talk of his team's loss and not wanting to talk about our win but he did talk amply about both it seems, going on about our trading smacks of some of his voodoo like he did last year to beat Port in the QF.

One very negative thing this might do is firmly entrench the two things I've hated the most since we got Carey.

The 'Adelaide needs Carey' tag made everybody start thinking that if we win the flag, it was because of him and not because of what our already damn fine list has shown already

And as well as this, at the same time the talk about how going and getting him was a bad move and anything less than a flag will make everybody think 'well they wasted their picks on promising youngster no 1, 2, 5, etc' and got this guy who they relied on to give them a flag but didn't'. That said, I know the picks that were used for Wells et al can't be judged as worth it yet but let's say they will be)

Put simply there will be negatives in their (whoever they turns out to be) appraisal of the AFC come years end if we A) win the premiership cup or B) don't win the premiership cup - if A happens, they'll say it was No. 2 who did it and that's it.......if B, they'll say No. 2 was a waste of time getting and now all Adelaide have are 'what might have beens'.

Hey Leigh, if we do win the flag I don't give a rat's whether they say that Carey won it single-handedly or that we won it because Ayres picks his nose with the little finger on his left hand!!!

Come on it was expected Malthouse would try & deflect the spotlight away from himself & the CFC & what better way than to at first build Carey up & then throw in all those what ifs & buts,

If we win the flag this year Wayne Carey will be just another player who has contributed to that goal along with the rest of the squad how much that is we'll just have to wait & see,

Youve got to laugh at Malthouse though; making statements about the AFC's merits of drafting a legend of the game (he said it himself) all the while having an imposing crop of youngsters.

Hes jealous he aint got both.

I think # 1 draft picks are often over rated.
I dont have statistics to prove that but Im sure there would be ample players picked up deep in the draft that would add as much value to a team.
