AFL Club
Essendon
So, four rounds in and some clear patterns emerging. You are a coach on the move, you need to pick the five best lists for a three year contract, 6 year contract and the five lists to avoid.

For mine:
3 year:
Hawthorn
Essendon
Geelong
Gold Coast
Sydney

6 year:
Gold Coast
Essendon
GWS
Geelong
Port Adelaide

Avoid:
Carlton
Melbourne
Brisbane
St Kilda
Richmond

I'd go (in no particular order):

3 years: Geelong, Essendon, North Melbourne, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide
6 years: Essendon, Gold Coast, GWS, Port Adelaide, Western Bulldogs
Avoid: Carlton, Brisbane, St. Kilda, the rest are in pretty good shape IMO

i'd put GC in the 3 year category.
Even if they don't do anything, watching that list grow together (with Gazza there) would be the easiest job in footy, just seeing 2-3 kids go from good contributer to absolute superstar every year would be great

Yeah it is an interesting pub argument.. all I know for sure is that there are some pretty ordinary lists in the AFL at the moment.. and some that seem to bulging with talent.

Carlton needs a complete rebuild.

Interesting with Adelaide isn't it.. biggest tease.. with Sloane/Dangerfield/Walker/Crouch but just seems weak somehow...

I think the clubs in the 6 year group are the most interesting.. got the potential and exciting lists that will be competitive and could sneak a flag (circa. 2008 Hawks) but probably got a few years to go before they peak. Anyway, my list:

Avoid:
Carlton

Geelong aren't winning anything within three years. Take one of the building 6-year teams and earn yourself a second contract.

Pretty much this. Get yourself a coaching position at GC and GWS and you're guaranteed a second contract with an outside chance of doing some real damage within three years and more than likely a lengthy period towards the top.

I'd take Carlton, Melbourne, St.Kilda, Brisbane, Bulldogs or Adelaide for 6 years.
I'm not interested in a 3 year, I want to recruit from a rebuild, implement underlings of my choice, start my own play style from the get go.
Would cop 3 years worth of heat to try to achieve brilliance.

First year draft: KPP's, silky players with no meat on them, unless there's a star in the making available, Rooke draft I'd look for a project ruckman and an athletic freak mid sized player, start working on his tank.

Every player I'd recruit would need the following attributes, or I'd not be interested.

Work Ethic
Coachability
Foot/Hand skills
Squeaky clean off-field

I'd also scout Tasmania more than other clubs, there's some freaks down here (incest jokes aside), a market asking to be tapped into.
