Pies and Dons set sights on Dal Santo

"Both the Bombers and Magpies have told Dal Santo's management group Flying Start not to let the young Saint star commit to St Kilda until they have at least made an offer..."

"It's believed St Kilda could offer as much as $350,000 a year, while the bottom-of-the-table Bombers and Pies could blow that out of the water with a $550,000-plus carrot..."

Quickly looking at options at only round 6 are Collingwood, so it is quite obvious we want something granted to us before season's end, and get onboard with somebody who can be the next something as our dominant players are growing older in the Buckleys, Burns's and Woewodins.

He's worth a lot more than 350k per year. Worth chasing, doubt we'll get a deal done though.

Chasing the big names at round 6 is very unusual, but might be a very good strategic plan. Chase down the big guns early and you may get the reward. It is all another dimension in football these days, so I guess chasing a player is a very strategic thing to do and the pies have realised the season is close to over, and needs to develop the team, they got the money, they want a big name player to fill in the void when Buckley goes.

I guess we will have to wait and see if it was the right thing to do.

If you leave it till later, it may be too late, because Del Santo might re-signs with the Saints for less money. Its best to put the cards on the table early and at least have him think about it. If he re-signs, fair enough. Probably will anyway.

It's not smart to do it so early at all. All the players in question will say, I'm gona stay at this club obviously. Then they are under pressure at the end of the year to stick to their word, wait another 10-15 weeks then chase them. Or at least keep it in house. As for us chasing the likes of Brown and Dalsanto, 15 other clubs would be having a look as well. Wouldn't be surprised if we get close to getting dalsanto and then we get pipped by some other club or we offer some ridiculous deal like Willo and Lokan and pick 56 for Dal.

How is it strategic to offer some one big money, more then he is getting now and will be paid by the saints next year. Doesn't take a genious CEO being paid around the same a year to figure that one out.

Its idiotic to put your heads in the sand until September and try and pretend that you are not interested in a player the quality of Jonathon Brown and Nick Del Santo. Brisbane and StKilda are not stupid, they know clubs will court these players, and will desperately try to re-sign them asap. If the cards are on the table then these clubs find it harder to re-sign these blokes at sub-market rates.

Its strategic, because even if they re-sign a player like Del Santo, that puts cap pressure on them keeping other good players.

The strategic planning wasn't to do with the money - that is, as you said, obvious  - the strategic planning is doing it in the first week on may, and not the first week of October!!!

I hope we get Dal Santo, but I doubt it.

StKilda's strategic planning will be to resign him during the season - October will be too late!!!! Do you get my point???

(putting $$$$$$$ signs in front of his eyes is also part of the plan)

Why are you at me....I am on your side here

Hmmmmm its a bit too early for this. St.Kilda will be more out to get him as quick as possible as they know that other clubs are already wanting to sign him up which will mean that he will be forced to make a decision earlier.

is he more important to the Saints than Luke Ball (who is also out of contract? please correct me if i am wrong). Saints may struggle to fit them all in, but then again realistically he hasnt got much going for him coming to the Pies in the near future, except the extra $...whereas at St kilda finals and plenty of them are in store in the next 2-4 seasons

that might be so.....but it all depends on the type of bloke he is, would he prefer team success, major cog in a gun midfield, play finals, and earn $350k a year
or be a superstar standout in a team of stragglers, most likely sit out of 8 for 1-3 years as we "rebuild", but earn $550-600k a year??

We are not really that far away from finals though, a gun midfielder, another year into the body of the richards who could become a leading ruckman of the game, and so more kicking practice so the likes of taz, harley, pebbles, rogan and co get a chance to mark a ball and we will be back come september.

Of course we could have just picked him in the draft instead of Cole (Del Santo went 2 picks later)  :(
