Noticed in another thread on prized possessions, a lot of people nominated a guitar or another instrument as something they would save in a fire etc... got me thinking... how many of you play an instrument, and if you play re you any good?

My father was a Jazz Musician so i have ALWAYS had music around me growing up ,and plenty of party's. lots of instruments as well.
We have a beautiful piano down back of the house. Doubt i could get that out in a house fire:)
But i have a Prized banjo and F hole Guitar that was handed on to me by a now passed away muso. And ukulele. Sets of Blues harps in many keys. Also have had a couple of kits of drums over the years i started playing them at age 4.
The last Jazz bands i played in as a regular was a band Named the merri Creek Jazz band and played weekly at the great Northern hotel.
Then in another band at the bottom of Rathdown Street on a Wednesday night.
Then weekends all the way down at Arther's seat and some Weekends at the Royal yacht club in Williamstown.
Had played in a few Rock bands over the years but just didn't like it. I was in a Door's tribute band for a while.
Anyway i gave it away about ten years ago as near all the muso's are now Dead:(
Hope this helps.

Play lead guitar in a band doing the rounds in Perth and do my own solo bluesy stuff on the side. Dont get off on playing covers. Got a bit of a collection of guitars going, a couple of them are my most prized possessions.

Playing guitar and writing songs is just a hobby - takes my mind off doing the 9-5 and something I really enjoy. Beats sitting in front of the tv and xbox. Playing live at a festival or a packed pub is the biggest buzz ever.

The whole thing about learning to play, learning licks, learning how to impro, buying gear, selling gear, song writing - its a life long craft and once your hooked you cant stop.

Wouldnt say I can shred or anything. Just enough to get me by to fit in with the band and let me make the music I want to. I freaking love it.

Have been playing the guitar for around 10 years now. Wow, didn't even realise it had been that long...

On and off during that time, though around 2 years ago I started getting into it again. I'm no Hendrix, but I enjoy it.

I also shred at Air Drums.

I'll have a guess and say you have Strats or Teles in your collection? And I'm a hack bedroom guitarist, love my metal so play mainly that, and my guitar has EMGs needless to say! :D

I'm a huge music enthusiast with zero talent, so I'd love to be able to play something but just can't. I've owned two guitars but am just hopeless. My life goal is to somehow learn saxophone.

I play the piano, as well as a bit of sax and trombone. I studied Music at university (Music/Literature double major). I play piano/keyboards in a band.

I play acoustic and sing. Not an unbelievable acoustic guitarist, solid enough though - singing is my real talent in music. Couldn't live without it.

I sing and play guit, bass, keys and drums. Music is my life. I'm fortunate enough to be building a studio at work now, which should be pretty awesome.

Starting to come along well...

Have a guitar but am pretty shit. Only know a few riffs. I don't practice very often so most of the time when i learn something i forget it before i use it again. Would love to be able to just jam on it but i seem to have no musical bones in my body.

Thats awesome. I'd kill to have a studio. Is that at your house?

All sorts really, I have a tele and a strat. Also got a gibson 335 and a big arsed Gretsch - the same that Chris Cheney from the living end plays, except a cheaper model. The Gretsch is my main weapon with the band - sounds awesome. Cos its hollow body it cranks. Got a fender jaguar bass which is probably my most prized guitar. Got it from the states much cheaper than what I could here. My acoustic is a piece of crap, but does the job and Ive had it for years.

Good thing about nice guitars is that they hold or even appreciate in value if you look after them.

That looks awesome, would be stoked to be able to stroll into my own studio whenever I felt the urge. Great job :thumbsu:.

Studio is at work. Because I work at a school, and have a supportive boss, It works out well :)

Some nice axes there, quality! :thumbsu: I hear the Gretsch can be pretty hard to play for a n00b, you can definitely get a nice twang out of them, big fan of Chris Cheney as a player, he's quite original in the traditional rock realm.

I got a Maton 225C acoustic recently, I'm not great on acoustic but that thing sounds great, bit too good for my lack of ability really! :o

Dang matons are sweet guitars. Cole Clark is another brand of acoustic made by people who used to make matons. The wood is QLD oak and something else, beautiful guitars. Would kill for one of those, expcept they are about $2000.

The Gretsch is pretty difficult to get around - its massive. But because of the huge sounds it gives we got rid of the need to have a bass player for the band...makes it easy cos dealing with bass players is a nightmare.

I LOVE my Taylor. Only a 114 but sounds amazing

I can play guitar, piano/keyboards and trumpet.

Mainly play my guitar these days, just a semi acoustic that I taught myself to play and just muck around with.

Learnt piano playing classical music with the Suzuki method (ie. playing from memory with no sheet music) back when I was in primary school but got bored of it and chucked it in when I was around 11 or 12 before picking it up again when I was in uni and basically reteaching myself to play again using contemporary sheet music that I bought or borrowed. Don't play all that much these days but still enjoy tinkling the ivories every now and again and I also have a keyboard I still play a bit.

Also learnt trumpet in high school and played in our school band. Never really enjoyed playing it as an instrument though, it was OK in a big band but not the sort of instrument you could just play by yourself around the house without annoying the shit out of your neighbours. Ended up selling my trumpet after I left high school and haven't played one since.

I've played most of my life, and outside of basic life tasks like breathing and sleeping, it's probably the thing I'm best at. But I don't get the gear fetish stuff at all. My guitar would be one of the last things I'd save in a fire.

Guitar and harmonica :D I also have a strange obsession with making guitar picks while I'm watching TV or listening to music.

I also have a Les Paul BFG in Gator Green and a Burns Brian May signature

Clarence?

Last few days I have pulled out my guitar and just played random chords. My tuner is broken so the guitar is terribly out of tune, don't actually know how to play any songs, know a few chords but that's about it. Wish I knew how to play though.

use an online tuner...
