They should play Hogan who deserves it. Failing that they should look at Davenport or another young player

Playing Byrnes is a total waste of time. They know exactly what he is able to give. He's got heart, speed, but awful skills. Nothing's changed this season. What do they think they'll get this time around?

It would be much more useful to get a look at a new player and I can't believe the selection committee haven't looked at someone else if they are going to give Varcoe a rest

GFC's own website even declare Hogan as "Debutant in-waiting" http://www.gfc.com.au/tabid/3933/Default.aspx?newsid=56051

Re: Play Simon Hogan and Stop Wasting Games on Shannon Byrnes

It was a perfect time to bring in Hogan for the Melbourne game. But the "he will only be dropped after one week for Milburn"... Obviously not. It would've been a great time to get a couple of games from him to see what he can do at AFL level.

But apparently we just have to put up with someone named Byrnes. Someone that we already know about and what he gives every week. He hasn't improved in the VFL, so I don't see how they think he'd do any better in the AFL.

Meh, what you going to do?

There is a 'no change' thread and a 'Shannon Byrnes bagging' thread as well as a changes v Sydney and two Geelong v Sydney threads. This really did not need it's own topic.

There sure is a need

I'm saying there is a kid whose name is Simon Hogan that should be playing AFL.

It's not just an anti-Shannon thread. I'm saying that if they want to give Varcoe a rest there are better options in the VFL side

Byrnes is the answer to a question that wasnt asked.

If Shannon shanks a kick in the forest but the selectors don’t see it, has he really shanked it at all?

I agree with you OldStyle2007.

Even if you accept the position (which I don’t) that Shannon should be among those in the mix for spots in the finals team if injuries arise, everyone already knows what he has to offer. Furthermore, he is not going to get any better by finding form or confidence in the team. We have seen over a period of years now that he has not done so.

Hogan consistently been one of the best performed players in the VFL this season. By not playing him now we are effectively ruling out the possibility of playing him in the finals because there’s very little chance of the selectors taking that leap of faith on a player that they haven’t had the chance to look at beforehand. If we had played him last week and this week at least we’d know one way or the other whether or not he should be considered during the finals.

maybe its as simple as trying to make byrnes look better with an eye to trading him during the offseason.

As for Hogan, I doubt he'd be considered for finals even if he played the next three weeks. Just too young and too many blokes who have put in full to near full seasons in the 1's who deserve to be there.

I'm a little surprised that a few younger players weren't given some playing time this season also. But, I'm REALLY surprised that selectors haven't given Harry Taylor a run forward to check his versatility at senior level. Could be useful in finals. Yeh, I understand that they want stability, but having some options if they get challenged (or the Camster cops an injury) might be very useful.

Selectors have about 25 serious chances to pare down to 22 for finals, with Tommahawk the only serious outside contender.

The last few weeks - yes
Season - no

Exactly.

There is NO good reason to play the guy just because he has had a few good weeks in the VFL. When he is constantly behind Byrnes, Tenace in the best, why would he get a gig ahead of them? He wont be playing finals and if we get so many injuries that we need him, we are all but f***ed anyway.

3-4 weeks out from the finals, you dont start experimenting with new players, unless they are TEARING it up in the VFL. I mean BOG every week by a mile tearing it up. Whilst we have had a few injuries I agree with bringing players in but simply put I wouldnt want Hogan in a pressure final after playing 1-2 games in the seniors. Wouldnt happen, shouldnt happen!

I am so glad people on here arent running the club. If 90% of them where we wouldnt have gotten close to a flag, NOT EVEN CLOSE!

I thought he was close to being de-listed, but with his VFL form, and constantly being named emergancy, he's still safe. I hope he ends up better then Byrnes.

Geelong has a history of giving guys on there last chance every opportunity to make it. I think what we are seeing is Byrnes get his last chance to fight for a spot on the 2009 AFL list.

1. Byrnes didn't even make the best in the VFL two weeks ago. Hogan has consistently been named in the best or BOG. He has earned his chance.

2. You are missing the point. By not playing Hogan you are ensuring he won't be picked for finals. By having a look at him now there's a chance (maybe a small chance) he could be picked for finals if we need to delve into our depth. We lose nothing by giving ourselves that chance.

Thankyou Catempire, exactly my point. Hogan is ahead of Byrnes in VFL form, and his capabilities at AFL are a total unknown whereas what Byrnes brings to the side is very well known.

So the problem is if we have a 1994 vs Carlton finals scenario with our 3 best midfielders out, what are we going to do - bring 2 or 3 first gamers in??

Cats selection hierarchy don't make many errors, but I reckon they've let an opportunity slip
