two others would be Basil Campbell and benny vigona who played in the late 70s for WA
It would be handy if a list of all players who played State of Origin football could be found somewhere. I went through this thread on the Lists forum:- http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/state-of-origin-team-line-ups-and-goals.1048615/
and picked out anyone who I knew (or was fairly sure) was from another state, applying the "last-used" SoO rules which covered where a player resided for the majority of time between the ages of 10 and 17.

There are probably a few others, especially from the earlier years who I've missed, and that thread probably leaves out team line-ups for a few of the games.

looking at the 1988 carnival program (I'm assuming its SOo )
with QLD Jim Sewell (ex east freo)
and 2 players with the NT team Kelly O'Donnell from Melbourne and Roy Cassetti from the sunshine coast
I haven't been able to find the full squads for all the teams at the 1988 Bicentennial Carnival anywhere to check them out myself, but is Jim Sewell actually named as a player for Queensland? He was in a football manager type of role with the Brisbane Bears in their early days, and I can't see anything that suggests he was still playing in 1988. There's plenty of mention of him having played for WA many times over the years, nothing about him having represented Queensland.

Jim Sewell.....he's in the pen- pix on (p39)
but not in the other team list (p31)

" Jim Sewell age 32 191 cm 85kg former Footscray
and East Fremantle defender who player who played
some fine football in Queensland in 1987 VFL gams 76"

maybe he was just acting as the team manager

here's the rest of the Queensland list 1988 carnival from page 31

You could also include other players born overseas such as John McCarthy (born in Wales) and Val Perovic, born in Croatia (Yugoslavia as it was in his youth). There are probably a few others if anyone is willing to search through the list. Obviously not all overseas born players played SoO specifically, though many would have played interstate football.
Did Jezza play SoO?

I don't think so. Looking at his records from the AFL Historical Statistics site, the last of his state games looks to have been in 1976 (15 games, 37 goals). State of Origin football was first played in 1977, of course.

13 Robert Mace
36 Mark Maclure
If Robert Mace (from Victoria) played for Queensland that would be another name to add to the list. Surely Mark Maclure didn't play for Qld. in the 1988 Carnival?!

I think Maclure was from East Sydney, obviously in Sydney.
I always thought of him as a NSW player, obviously Carlton recruited him from there, but it's hard to figure out what his genuine State of Origin should be classed as. He was living in Queensland and played football there in his younger days, in 1988 he was back there as an Assistant Coach with the Bears.

http://australianfootball.com/players/player/markmaclure/10727

Born in Perth, Mark MacLure moved to Brisbane when he was 11 after his father was stationed there in the Navy. He played under-age football with Coorparoo, and then, after moving to Sydney, played in the under 19s with East Sydney. Shortly after making his senior debut he was watched by Carlton secretary Bert Deacon

http://blueseum.org/Mark+Maclure

Early in his career, when Maclure began confirming that Carlton had unearthed another promising key position prospect, the football press of the day made much of the story that the 188 cm, 89 kg blonde forward had been recruited from the East Sydney Australian Football Club in Sydney. Portrayed as one of the trail-blazers for our code in the heartland of rugby league, Maclure was later seen as one of the standard-bearers of the AFL push into Sydney.

That claim proved to be a very cheeky one. While Maclure was in fact signed to Carlton from the Sydney club, he had actually been born in WA, and took to the game in the southern states. This came about because Mark’s father was in the Australian Navy at the time, so Mark played football wherever his family was sent. At the height of the Vietnam conflict in the early 1970’s, that meant Sydney.

I see from this page that Maclure was still playing football in Qld. at that stage, so he may well have played in the carnival. The pages from the Football Budget for the Bicentennial Carnival can be seen here.

has anyone got the first WA state of origin team from 1977?
I posted a link to this thread the other day (it has most of the team lineups for the SoO games):-

I particularly like the politically correct front cover
I found the propaganda on page 57 about the Player Retention Scheme and recruiting raids by interstate clubs (obviously referring to Victorian clubs) hilarious:-

"Currently a number of interstate clubs are making many vague and so called lucrative offers to our players. However, the SANFL recognises that there is a lot more to a player's future than a quick dollar in the hand, which has so many conditions attached to it that the player often finishes up totally disillusioned with the interstate club to which he is recruited and cannot wait to return home."

I remember those days very well, the hypocrisy on display was enormous. The WAFL was by then in a weakened state and SANFL clubs happily raided their WA counterparts, rather than giving them a chance to recover from West Coast's entry into the national competition. Tasmania was targeted as well, Woodville had something like 10 or 11 players from that state on it's books! On the radio Ken 'KG' Cunningham interviewed yet another Woodville recruit from Tassie and said to him "those Victorians have really r*ped Tasmania"!

Jezza was named Victorian captain in 1979 for the match against South Australia (not played under SoO rules) but had to withdraw due to injury (replaced, ironically, by Blight!). Later that year neither Jezza nor Blight were eligible for Victoria at the State of Origin Carnival.

In 1980 Jezza was one of four Canberra-born VFL players who were named in the ACT team that defeated Victoria. I reckon that would have been it for him at interstate level.

Strangely, that game wasn't added to Jesaulenko's tally of State/Origin matches on the pages of the AFL Historical Statistics site. He had 14 games/37 goals after the 1975 season, 15 games/37 goals after 1976, and it stayed that way until the end of his career. Perhaps they didn't count games played by "lesser states", since it was a SoO match that seems a bit surprising.

Kevin Neale (from Victoria) also played for the ACT in the 1980 game and was another who played for someone other than his original state.

Just had a look at the goalkickers/best players and no mention of Jezza - he must have been a late scratching. Interestingly, the old AFL stats guides from early 2000s don't consider this match an official SoO game despite the VFL-listed guys in the ACT team.

He did indeed play according to this match report from The Age:-

https://news.google.com.au/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19800707&printsec=frontpage&hl=en (page 26 of 28)

"While one-time hero of the town Alex Jesaulenko had a horrific game"

Strange that it wasn't classed as an official SoO match. With Jesaulenko (I'm not sure if there were any others) returning from the VFL to play for the ACT I'm not sure what else it could have been classed as!

This article from The Canberra Times (as well as confirming that Jesaulenko played) says "The ACT, playing it's second State-of-origin match against the VFL,":- http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/13917135

The most recent AFL Record Season Guide doesn't include it on the list of SoO games.

I was there, Jezza was not exactly a young man by then, my old man used to play golf with him at Yowani Golf club.

From memory Victoria had 3 teams playing that weekend, the weakest or apparently the weakest was playing the ACT, although that is extremely debatable, the ACT was revved up to beat the Vics

I went to the game as a young fella, i think it was at Manuka Oval rather than the old Football Park in Phillip, not sure of the reasoning behind that decision.

Manuka Oval is bigger than the MCG and now has the old MCG scoreboard, not sure when that was installed, but i think in the 1980's.

Jack Fingleton scoreboard strikes a chord.
