Both our senior and reserve 22's are improved. So I ask, where is the stupidity? I'm happy to concede if you can suggest how we're not better off?

Because we'd be giving up our most important defender, a potential all australian ruckman and our leading goalkicker for a kid who could (probably will) be good. It's just flat out lunacy.

Put it this way, if the blues traded Lachie Henderson, Matthew Kreuzer and Andrew Walker for Pick one to draft Boyd, would you think that is a positive for the blues?

We'd have one legit ruckman on our list, and our tall depth would have exactly 2 games of AFL experience between them.

Put simply, while i like the nostalgia of the Vanders, Longs and Neagles, you've had an absolute mare here

West coast are after tayte pears and are pretty confident in getting him. I personally rate him and think he could add a lot as a third tall running defender. What do west coast have that we would want? And to persuade tayte to stay do we need to push fletch into retirement at the end of this season?

Probably a first round pick. We can bully them a bit because if Pears goes to the PSD GWS will get him so WC would be keen to make a trade work.

Honestly, why?

Waters, Wilson and Schoefield are all pretty decent as medium defenders.

I expect them to make a move for Hooker, not Pears

Glass retiring + Brown likely to go to the Saints means they'll chase somebody who's a good 2nd defender

Waters is always injured, Wilson is more of a small defender and Schofield can play KPP

Also hooker wanted to stay last year so can't see him wanting to move if he and the team are having a better year.

I hope its not the case as they probably won't put up their pick 8-9, and don't have much we'd like on their list.

We should be going after Ryan Griffen. Would fit into our mid field like a glove.

The Dogs have already signalled interest in Crameri, we should be able to package up a win win deal no worries.

He is contracted and already said he is staying. Stop bringing up Griffen.

Wishful thinking no doubt, but I wonder if Pears and a first round pick could snag a Gaff or Shuey.

I'd prefer Gaff than Shuey.. The exact replacement and compliment to Stanton..

Don't think those boys are going anywhere to be honest

We did this to death about a month ago. It seems to be totally un-achievable (short of trading half or KPP stocks away). Has a huge contract and likely to be given captaincy (or so we were told).

Cooney is not that dynamic player he used to be. Not much point to taking him on at all.
He's not, but he would make us a stronger, deeper team. He would play HFF with stints in the middle, increasing midfield depth. Can never have too many class players.

Would rather Dahlhaus in this role tbh

Would prefer a player like Luke Player (who is out of contract incidentally - I think??) who would more than likely cost the same and be around for longer

Parker?

There is absolutely no need to force Fletch to retire but TRB should have already come to terms with telling the great man that he is no longer a best 22 player (and it has to be conceded that this would probably force his retirement).

Pears and Gumby are both cued up behind him (with it surely being a formality that Hurley and Carlisle will go back to their rightful places in defence). The loss of these players because of the presence of Fletcher cannot be justified especially when he is not exactly commanding a spot each week.

At the risk of flogging a dead horse, put Crameri and Pears with the midfield running group in the coming pre-season, send them to Arizona, etc, have them drop a little weight and set them for structural roles as smalls in 2014 and beyond. I just don't see why we should lose any talent that could give us a significant advantage when we don't have to.

Future structure could and should be:

-------- KPD1: Carlisle --- KPD3: Hooker
-------- KPD2: Hurley ---- 4thD: Pears (primarily a stopper floating between smalls and talls as required)

R: Bellchambers (the improved, round the ground model)

--------- KPD2: Gumby --- HF1: Crameri (basically to replace Winderlich, not that we can't have both)
--------- KPD1: Daniher -- R2: Ryder

Cooney would come for free (draft pick wise). Better to use free agency to top up our list with top players, while keeping draft picks.

I'd prefer to pay for a bloke who'll be around for the next 6-8-10 years, than get a cooney through FA.

For example, If we were to somehow snag pick 1, i wouldn't be flipping it for Griffen or whoever else, i'd keep it, draft a gun midfielder and set us up for the next 10 years

What about having a look at Matt rosa ? Fairly decent mid
No idea where his contract situation sits atm

I would argue that the 'intercept marking role' is a byproduct of defensive structure / game style. When Bomber Thompson was at Geelong, their intercept marks were through the roof, and since he's come to Essendon, so are ours, and in particular, Hooker's.

With Hurley, Carlisle, Pears and Hibberd 'good marks' in the back 6, I think the 'Hooker role' is covered through defensive structure. This backline, when adding Dempsey and Ashby, has better run, disposal, and 1v1 capability. Hooker's loss is adequately covered, especially considering it helps bring Tom Boyd to the club.

Think you are under-estimating Hooker's role in the team. Only about 30% of his intercept possessions come from marks - and 40% are contested marks - And 70% of his intercept possessions are ground balls/loose ball gets.

Don't think that any defender can play that specific role.

It will be interesting to see who WC target - Pears or Hooker. Ultimately I can see one of the talls leaving for more opportunities. Certain that the club wants all the talls to stay.
