Because he clearly doesn't want to play for them and wants to go play in his home state maybe . Would YOU select someone with that attitude?

He's not much good !

You can't put a price on the culture of the club, and I daresay rewarding Will Hams for earning a spot rather than a talented tosser who couldn't give a **** will be worth more than any on-field benefits we can get from Hams.

That is one way to look at it...personally I rather pick the best players and Gartlett was exactly that, he is clearly the better player.

Agree I've mentioned this before.

TBC + Pears or Hurley even (sorry Hurley I do like you but I rather a forward that can mark)

For pick 1

Take Pears out and I would do that, I think we need Pears long-term. Would rather gamble and get rid of Hurley before I get rid of Tayte Pears.

So Hurley, who can play forward or back (even if he is still learning the forward role) is worth less to you than Pears, who I like, but who has hardly gotten a gig this season in spite of not being injured? Please explain why you would cut?

You want the honest answer- he isn't as good as we all thought for starters. Carlile and Hooker are our key posts, Pears is your perfect running 3rd tall. Hurley I would classify as one of our talents but for the right price (namely Tom Boyd) he is worth giving away. I would do a Hurley + Our first for Boyd in a heartbeat. I would do TBC + Hurley + our first for Pick 1 + Taylor Adams.

Disagree, his wrists are horrible and I would trade him if we can't get a guarantee they'll ever be right again, but the only reason he is still capable of playing is because of how damn good he his.

See that is where I see it differently. If we take for a second that Carlile and Hooker are our CHB/FB's for the next 10 years..where does Hurley fit in. He is awful up forward. Sure blame his wrists, but he is ordinary up there. So where does he fit in? I wouldn't move two potential AA backmen just to fit Hurley in back there, so where does he fit?

That said for GWS who are crying out for defenders he is worth a LOT! We could easily get the pick 1 for him and our first rounder.

Go ask the Geelong board how awful Max Rooke was, cause essentially Hurley is a better version of him. In two and half quarters against St.kilda Hurley was involved in 13 goals, now say what you will about the quality of opposition but regardless of that I haven't seen another forward put up numbers like that this year.

The fact is, expectation is the problem, not performance. People expected him to be a star but now we have to reevaluate based on his body, what we have is a very intense competitive player in a forward line crying out for some hardness.

Pears is the perfect third defender/running third tall who can't beat a key position opponent to save himself and whose counter attacking forays tend to peter out into 15 meter sideways kicks? Amazing!

Pears' future is as a defensive utility. It doesn't mean that he can't be a best 22 player but the only guy he'd be able to squeeze out of the side is Baguley. He is so far from being a reliable tall defender it isn't funny. Hurley is comfortably the best defender at the club. His ability to beat an opponent, kick the ball long and accurately and his intensity on the lead make him twice as capable as Pears in any key defensive post I can imagine (and more versatile and suited to more opponents than Carlisle is).

Edit: there is also the reality that Hurley is still clearly the best key forward we have for the reasons mentioned by others above.

Doesn't Keane do the draft nowadays? Anyway, Bellchambers + Pears for pick 1 looks more and more attractive. Get Boyd and laugh at having Salmon and Tredrea reincarnates in the forward line. Then trade for a Jessie White type.

Seriously though, Jessie White would be a handy get right now

Jesse White wouldn't be a handy get for the reserves mate.

Seriously, we've got about 4 players on the list below 197cm and you want Jesse ****ing White?

As a reserve ruckman he isn't that bad. It's not as if Sydney need him anyway

I think that still happens. It is just that the sort of problems that Garlett had mean that he's a good chance to not make it. Talent aint enough and it os well known the amount of dedication and sacrifice required to succeed at this level. Will Garlett still be working hard during a knee rehab? Will he be part of a plan to play decoy so a lesser light can step up in the space he's created? Will he develop defensive skills or other ways to work through plans opposition put into him once he starts doing offensive damage?

These are what the recruiters would have been worried about more than actually using a drug occasionally. If he couldn't hold off at important times and he couldn't be bothered keeping it quiet he is probably impulsive and lazy. The risk is high and because it was high profile there was a chance for lots of egg on face!

I, however, would have taken the risk myself. Hams is a much longer term prospect and could have been a rookie pick. Garlett had something to offer in a weakness of ours this year playing as a small forward. He is also just what our list is lacking long term as a silky midfield player with run and who can get plenty of the ball. He was well worth the risk in my eyes.

In 3 years from now a midfield core of Heppell, Zaka, Garlett and Myers would be pretty freakin good, especially as Watson, Stanton and Goddard would be around. A developed O'Brien will be a better tagger than Hocking because of his run and Kav and Merrett should come on. (Also the recruiters are very confident that Gleeson is going to be a VERY good player).

Also in three years we should have a settled and mature spine.

I'd much rather spend some cash to lock Daniher up in an airtight, multi year contract. Would not blink an eye at a six year deal.

Is that necessary though? I know you might have been a bit tongue in cheek, but being a father son with his last name, I doubt he would be looking elsewhere (forgetting G. Ablett Jnr of course haha)

You don't have to pay massive overs.

Could offer him a contract that is modest in the first two years, and scales up to something fairly significant. Then take that figure and pay it where it best suits us (ie. front load it, scale it up, have one big year - whatever).

We get the double advantage of locking up a supreme talent at spending the cash where it suits us, and he has the benefit of an ironclad list place, security, and lack of speculation.

We were gun shy for a decade on long term contracts due to Mercuri - reckon we are pretty safe here.

I'll take a stab in the dark:

Bellchambers: Will stay. Seems to want to, and we want him. If he goes you'd expect we'll get a decent pick for him though.
Browne: No idea on him. He obviously has talent and was rated, but hasn't done much this season and there have been rumors that he is going to another club. I'd like him to stay.
Colyer: Gone. Has had the chances and not done enough with them. Not unique enough to keep over our other options.
Crameri: If he gets a great deal it would be hard to say no. I think he will stay though.
Davey: One year deal at best. Given our forward options we might roll him over for another while we wait for Merrett and Kav to develop further.
Davis: Gone. Never got a debut. Never heard enough. Obviously not impressing. Some people are still hanging on to one pre-season game two years ago. Not enough.
Fletcher: Will go on.
Gumby: Possibly gone. Has been fit for the most part and just hasn't done enough this year. It all depend on who might want him. If another club offers a good deal he and the club will probably take it.
Hardingham: Will be delisted.
Hille: Will retire.
Hooker: Will get a new contract.
NLM: Will retire.
Melksham: New contract for sure.
NOB: Obviously rated and will stay.
Winderlich: Will get another year.

Del and Hunter will get removed from the rookie list. Steinberg will get another year. Dalgleish is too hard to say, I haven't seen enough.

Remember that we freed up a lot of cash last season by downgrading Dyson, Monfries, Prismall, McVeigh, Lonergan, Slattery etc to the likes of Kommer, Daniher, Hams etc. Look at it this way:

Goddard incresed 400k or so on Monfries
Daniher decreased 100k on Dyson
Van Unen decreased 200k on Prismall
Kommer decreased 200k on McVeigh
Hams decreased 250k on Lonergan
Gregory decreased 150k on Slattery
Ashby was around the same as Steinberg (onto rookie list)

That frees up ~$500k. Given new contracts it's probably back to around the same again. We can probably afford him
