trading a 24yo for a 30yo is a bad idea at this time in our development, i don't give a **** who the player is.

yeah i wouldn't trade gumbleton for riewoldt either.

Bomber Thompson has a history of developing his own, I can't see us trading Meyers for joey.

Yeah, Bomber knocked back the potential Ottens trade because he knew Blake was on the rise.

In Geelong premiership years how many players came from other clubs? You give me possessions and ill shut up.

E
Just as stupid as saying no to a trade because Bomber likes to develop his own, he has and will trade when required.

Except on SEN when queried about Crameri he said he isn't the best trader and would prefer Crameri who they have developed to stay...

No goggles I just don't rate Shaw and see Dempsey more important to our 'team' structure than what Shaw offers

Dempsey, Hibberd and Shaw would be better for our structures than Dempsey and Hibberd. we can't go wrong by adding Shaw across our half back line.

Lets look at the ins and outs

Out

Davis
Hille
NLM
Gumbleton
Davey
Crameri

In

Chapman
Mellington

That leaves 3 list spots. We will probably have 22 and 34, assuming the Crameri/Gumby/Mellington trades go through. So EFC may upgrade Steinberg and Dalgleish. So two picks in the draft at 22 and 34.

What do you think Yoda ?

Looking at it from purely an 'on paper' view it looks good but our backline stood up in it's current structure for the majority of the season. It's not all about names and possessions it's how the group works together and I think we've only seen a glimpse of what our current back six are capable of.

But using one trade as an example of Bomber not developing his own is just stupid

Didn't he also trade for Mooney?

So Ottens and Mooney, two important players in their first two Premierships.

They were both brought in at the right age though.

Trading for too many 28 / 30 years plus players will set is up for a big fall. We have that experience from not too long ago. They need to fill a role and they need to make us a better team. At the same time not affect the development of the talented kids in our team.

and when Dempsey or Hibberd were injured?
we had no answers except use Goddard across half back, when in reality he adds heaps more playing mid/forward for us.

As much as Steinberg has improved out of sight in the past 18 months, Im not completely sure he will become an AFL standard defender. He probably isn't nimble enough to go with the Mark LeCras, Stevie Johnson types, whilst he would get run off his feet by the more mobile third talls like Jack Darling, Jack Gunston etc.

He is defensively sound, however, it is one position we have a plethora of options. Kicking can still be an issue and he he doesn't offer a great deal offensively.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Steinberg go either way (Delisted or Upgraded). The draft sanctions probably fall in his favour as he is a known quantity and a better bet than say draft pick number 102 (or whatever it would be).

Good call on Alwyn Davey being delisted. If the rumours are to be true and Chapman is coming to Essendon, then it could smell the end for Alwyn Davey.

If your outgoings are on the mark then acquiring at least one ready to go KPP (forward or back) is a must, even for depth and insurance. Losing Crameri (>WB), Gumbleton (>Freo), Hille (Retired) and even NatRat (Retired) was useful in plugging holes in KP posts.

The rookie list is where the list changes is going to be IMO. Dell & Steinberg the main list management questions.

You don't have a player like Hibberd, Dempsey or Shaw on the list for depth, so the extra flanker has to be playing midfield, and they have to be better there than the alternative midfielder. Alternately, maybe one of them could push Fletcher/Pears out and play a more defensive role. Otherwise, you have to back young and fringe guys to provide that sort of depth - Pears, Hardingham, Dalgleish, Browne, Ashby, and so on.

Goddard and Heppell were just half backs once too, at the end of the day Shaw, Dempsey and Hibberd are in Essendon's best 22 easily. We would be better for it too.
Shaw is a walk up start for the Hawks and Swans and no team has a better half backline then them.

Freo's HB line>Hawthorn's. But yeah, Hawks would be 3rd best easily and he'd be a walk-up start.

Dalgleish, Browne or move a Heppell or BJ... even Stanton back if injury strikes but you don't recruit a 'Shaw' for depth. You need to look at it in a real world environment rather than an 'on-paper' scenario.
For example the All-Australian Team every year pops midfielders into any spot they can find one for but just how well would they function in a match situation?? I think you'd be surprised with the results.
In all brutal honesty our list ain't 'that' bad we require Heath Shaw... he's nothing special and i'd rather see a Dalgleish/Browne/Ashby type roll through there. I can see the argument for Chapman as I think our forward line lacks that experience he could offer.

are you guys serious about being a top 6 team next year ? You guys are surely going to loose gumby and crameri who else do you have in your foward line ? hurley a good marker but shit at kicking. btw top6 sides dont fall away in the second half of the season ;)

Maybe you should actually watch a Essendon game, your lack of knowledge about Hurley is really pathetic.
