Goddard and Heppell were just half backs once too, at the end of the day Shaw, Dempsey and Hibberd are in Essendon's best 22 easily. We would be better for it too.
Shaw is a walk up start for the Hawks and Swans and no team has a better half backline then them.

Right, but my point is that "depth" isn't the justification. If what you want is depth, recruit fringe players or back in the young guys. If you want to target a player like Shaw, it has to be because he'll improve the team and there has to be a role for him or you'll be giving up a lot for a non-optimal outcome.

Now, this is a hypothetical scenario because the player isn't on the market, but if you had a choice between Shaw and a small forward of equivalent calibre you'd obviously go for the forward because he fills a structural need. That's why many here are/were more keen on Chapman or Sylvia than Shaw, Dal Santo or Montagna.

FWIW.. whilst I see the potential of Myers having to fight hard for a spot next year.. I am not suggesting we trade him for the sake of it..

I am literally ONLY suggesting that you would consider a trade 'in the right circumstances'.. ie for Pick 2 or maybe a guy like Montagna.. depending on your point of view.

I would also suggest that anyone who believes Myers isn't 'tradable' etc etc.. is looking through the red goggles.. yes Myers looks good in patches.. and is about to hit his prime.. he is not a superstar yet and may never be one.

95% chances Myers stays.. and the 5% chance he leaves will be for either a top 5 pick OR a true gun.. can't beat that scenario.. all good for EFC!

just wanted to drop in here to congrats on picking up Chappy.

I don't know how many games he will play, but he will give 110% every time. He will lead by example, he will teach younger players, he will commit himself to what ever is needed.

I wish him all the best. For a club that has a has a lot of shit to deal with he is the the type of strength that will move over that crap.

Good luck next year guys. It saddens to me to see Chappy in a jumper without hoops, but I think that you will get back what you pay for him in spades.
