Just wondering what's happening with Pierce and White? White looked very impressive in his debut last season, appeared to be a good half back in the making and has now gone missing. Pierce had a senior game, kicked a goal and we expected him to be an up and coming ruckman and he too has gone off the radar. I would expect a lot of time should be put into these two guys by the club, but no result? What's going on?

Pierce has been quite disappointing considering he got the extension and is now playing VFL dev league. Marshall hasn't helped him.

Both lads will be up against it to extend on their contracts which both finish next year.

by all reports rice is coming on in leaps and bounds. beyond that i think we are seeing it week to week in the seniors

you raise an interesting point on white he feels like he's dropped off the face of the earth. having said that he is probably afforded more time to develop now that roberton has come on and is playing really good football

the worry i do have with our player development is we have far too many being classified as half back flankers or small defenders. we are not getting enough as genuine wingers or midfielders

the development of someone like dunstan is probably more of a concern. wright at pick 25, hickey with a pick 13 downgrade are two more that dont look too good. tom lee as the pick 12 downgrade was a bust, where we ended up stuffing around with him towards the end.

the development of our small fwds is also a concern. gresham looks like a solid find but beyond that we havent had much success there. billing is developing nicely now that he's playing solely on the flank

weller has gone backwards, we lack that one more small to medium type that is extremely dangerous around goal. along with 2 outside midfielders that can serious hurt the opposition

Its concerning that we arent getting quality games of AFL footy into the likes of ...
White , Rice , Marshall , Goddard , Phillips , Long , Battle , Coughlan , OKearney

I guess unless the coach comes out and admits that his systems are breaking down and this is a major contribution to our recent form, then it can only mean that we have a few players who are not producing the goods at the standard required, and IMO that is the time we start blooding a couple of younger players.

To be fair Goddard is still finding his way after his serious Achilles injury from last year . Would expect that he will play the rest of the season in Sandys side to get his confidence back up to what it was .

Long and Battle , Marshall and Phillips are very young and still learning . Too raw for afl at the moment.

White is suffering from a log jam of defenders in front of him . Unfortunately for him guys like Sav and DMac have been getting much more of the ball when they play for Sandy so they have gone up instead of him. And Webster has made his spot in the afl his own this season until he broke his hand .

That leaves NOK and Coughlan who are both still young but I don't know if they will make it as they seem a bit on the lightweight side for afl footballers .

Rice must be very close to getting in the afl side , might even come in for the Adelaide game after the bye.

White made his job much harder by returning after the long break in very ordinary condition. Has been paying for it ever since and is being taught a tough lesson.

Perhaps with the exception of Gresham - who is teetering on the edge at the moment mind you - no one from our 2014 or 2015 crops have cemented their spots yet. It's holding us back big time. Are they not doing enough or have we retracted the opportunities to chase the wins?

I'm looking mainly at McCartin, Rice, Long and White to be given more opportunity to push their case for the 22. Developing fresh youth and pushing for finals are not mutually exclusive. Yes by weight of numbers it hampers efforts, but 1 or 2 do not. We're improving, but not as fast as others.

14 players on the list OOC at the end of the season:
5. Shane Savage
11. Leigh Montagna (UFA)
12. Nick Riewoldt (UFA)
13. Jack Lonie
15. Jack Billings
17. Dylan Roberton
19. Sam Gilbert (UFA)
24. Sean Dempster (UFA)
29. Jimmy Webster
33. Nick O'Kearney
35. Jack Sinclair
37. Bailey Rice
38. Nick Coughlan
45. Jason Holmes

Dempster obviously already gone, O'Kearney and Coughlan rookies. Anyone else to leave has to be traded, so they have to be wanted by another club.

To put it another way, Minch will be on the list next year.

While I certainly don't think we win or lose based on which of Long, Wright, Minch, Lonie play (as I've said elsewhere), I do think it'd have been handy to have Wright out there on Saturday. His pace and greyhound-chasing-a-rabbit ferocity towards opposition slingshot-backmen would have been very, very helpful. I realise he was out with concussion, but yeah, I thought he's been excellent when he's played this year, and not often really been dropped for form, as such.

Percy's a bit of a dog with a bone when it comes to players being played in position, but with Wright out and Mav in poor form we haven't really had anyone playing that pressure forward role. Since coming back into the side as a pressure forward last year St Kilda are 9-3 with Wright in the side and 4-5 with him out of the side.

37. Bailey Rice 2 year deal
38. Nick Coughlan gone

Hopefully we can get something for Sav..

Also think we should give NOK a run in the seniors before the end of the year, see how he acquits

I had a play and came up with this:

This would open up 4 list spots & 5 if Roo thinks his body has finally had enough.

As we need to take 3 picks to draft (one can be rookie) we could only FA or Trade one player before one of +1 year players may have to go.

This is very tricky - based on form you would exclude Gilbert, however we are probably at least two seasons form really challenging and that point he'll be 33 (on GF day).

Tough call depends how we rate Rice, Sinc and Lonie.

Roo has to go on. Clearly good enough and wants too.

Joey wants to and I think the club will still want him to.

Someone else may be sacrificed

Savage should be delisted.

Rice isn't getting a 2 year deal without playing a game, Holmes will be lucky to extend I think he's 28
Disagree on Rice, from all reports he's seriously impressed this year/preseason. Coaches very bullish and therefore will get 2. IMO

I know pierce is still contracted but unless he steps up big next year he's a goner. Would prefer to have Holmes on the list than Pierce. Holmes' ruck work is good. His centre square stuff especially.
