I got the thread idea from the Freo board.

Just a grade a player(s) and write your expectations of them.

Format
A - Well above expectations
B - Above expectations
C - Par
D - Below expectations
E - Well below expectations

I'll start of with Josh Thomas.

A - Best 22 all year. Plays 20+ games, average 25+ disposals, 5+ clearances and 1 goal a game. Dayne who?

B - Keeps Jarryd Blair out of the team and plays that defensive forward and midfield rotation role. Plays 18+ games, provides good forward pressure, becomes a handy midfield rotation and becomes a prolific goal kicker.

C - Plays 10-15 games in out all year, plays one game where he gets 30+ disposals and another where he gets 3 goals to tease us but very inconsistent and doesn't show up to most games.

D - Injured most of year but plays 3 AFL games but doesn't look up to pace goes to the VFL strings games where he gets 30+ disposals but kept out of the side by our other young mids and gets injured when on the verge of a senior re call (Or in other words he gets Patty K'd).

E - Injured and inconsistent most of the year, doesn't play a game at AFL level and delisted at years end.

Good idea.

I'll go with Pendles.

A - Wins best and fairest, takes his captaincy to another level and leads us back into finals again.

B - due to off season surgery, comes back a little slower and takes first 5 or 6 games to hit his straps, but still finishes top 3 in best and fairest.

C - carries injury through season affecting his form and 'only' finishes top 5 in best and fairest.

D - team performs inconsistently resulting in his captaincy and form being impacted to compound his shoulder. Not enough support from other players and further deterioration of Swanny means Pendles is our only a grade midfielder and is affected by lack of other stars in our team and constant focus of opposition.

E - suffers injury and misses 6 or more weeks.

I'll give it a go with Trav Cloke. Like the idea :)

A - Kicks 70+ goals and wins the Coleman. Add to that an AA selection, competition leader in contested marks and finishes top 2 in the BNF.

B - Manages between 55-70 goals, top 5 in the Coleman, AA selection and Top 3 finish in the BNF

C - 35-55 goals for the season, top 10 finish in the BNF. Hopefully Trav has some assistance when it comes to kicking us a score.

D - Misses 2-3 games due to injury and kicks less than 35 goals. Doesn't finish top 10 in the BNF.

E - Misses more than 6 games from injury, has an average of 1 goal a game.

I'll do Tony Armstrong

A PASS as didn't get a game ;) ;)
B PASS as didn't get a game
C PASS as didn't get a game
D PASS as didn't get a game
E Like the last four above answers pass ;) ;)

Travis Varcoe

A - Plays every game of the season, kicks 30+ goals and averages 20+ possessions. Finishes top 5 in the Copeland. Provides the team with some pace and class.

B - Plays 20+ games for the year and uses his pace and skill to offer the team something it's been missing since Leon retired. Top 10 in the Copeland. Looks comfortable in the midfield and dangerous in the forward half.

C - Best 22 for the year but misses 4-5 games through niggles. Kicks a few classy goals when fit, looks dangerous when played forward and slippery on the wings. Only averages around 15 possessions a game but uses it well enough so that you could have sworn he had at least 20.

D - Averages less than 15 possessions and a goal a game. Misses chunks of the season and his form is inconsistent. Gets an occasional run in the VFL as a result of injury and form.

E - Struggles to make an impact in any position he's used in and gets shifted around the ground as a consequence. Misses large chunks of the season through injury and fails to make the most of his opportunities when fit. Bucks gives him a run in the VFL to find some form, he then gets another niggle/injury and a rest, rinse and repeat.

Wow, I would have said the exact same thing

Except for E - Season ending injury in the nab cup.

Yeah I almost had a "/misses the whole season through injury" at the end but that is obviously worst case scenario for any player. Also felt like if I offered two different scenarios on that point I could have offered different scenarios dependant on position played in the other points and it would have been an endless cycle which eventually turned into a choose your own adventure book.

It's time for the one, the only, Jarryd Blair.

A - 22+ games, 30+ goals, 5+ average tackles. Pretty simple really, actually be a worthwhile small forward.

B - 22+ games, averages at least 5 tackles a game with 20 disposals at 70% efficiency, and 95% handball efficiency (he's been known for a few errant handballs, hence pointing it out), 20 goals for the season.

C - 20+ games, averages 4+ tackles, 15 disposals, ~20 goals.

D - Less than 15 goals for the entire season (assuming 20 games played), doesn't make an impact with tackles or ball in hand.

E - Above but with a 60% disposal efficiency and somehow manages to get games whilst clogging up a position. When thrown into the middle has zero impact.

Broomhead:

A - Every game, av 2 goals per game, Norm Smith - AA & B&F in a premiership year, fathers 10 kids with a bunch of sporty ladies and Miranda Kerr.

B - 20+ games, av 1.5 goal per game, Nominated for AA with all the other forwards; doesn't quite make the cut but Oates sign him as the face of their sweeping range of products.

C - 14+ games, av 1 goal per game, Looks good at times but goes missing at others, classy finishing but lacks fitness, cuts himself shaving and that makes him sad for a few days.

D - 5+ games, av 0.5 goals per game, injuries & fitness are disappointing again, quits AFL to star in an off-broadway musical about Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

E - Eaten by wolves.

Good idea.

I'll go with Pendles.

A - Wins best and fairest, takes his captaincy to another level and leads us back into finals again.

B - due to off season surgery, comes back a little slower and takes first 5 or 6 games to hit his straps, but still finishes top 3 in best and fairest.

E - suffers injury and misses 6 or more weeks.
I think if Pendlebury finished 5th in the B and F it would be a huge disappointment, not par. Par for Pendlebury is a top 2 finish. Hes that much better than rest of the players.

Elliott.

A. 50 plus goals adds midfield dimension to his game.

B. 45 goals. midfield time.

C. 30 goals plays the 2014 role.

D. 15 goals doesn't find it much in the middle.

E. 10 goals goes missing through out games.

Also hope he plays a hundred game for us before he moves back to Adelaide with his sport ladies and Miranda Kerr.

Freeman.

A. Plays all games. av 25+ touches, and provides pace and run throught the midfield. Wins the rising star. Polls well in brownlow. Part of premiership team.

B. Plays all games. 20+ av. Makes himself an essential midfielder. Shows flashes of brilliance.

C. Plays most games and does well, gets a 22 lock. Av15+ Touches.

D. Works his way in to the side via the vfl, plays half the season. Does well and shows potential.

E. Struggles to find the consistency and skill to secure a regular senior position. Gets about 5-10 games.

Bar set very high for someone who has never played an AFL game... I would say that E would be the expected outcome for a 0 gamer and anything above that is a bonus...

That being said, I fully expect option A to play out.

I think your B should actually be the C, your A should actually be the B, and the A should involve a top 3 Brownlow finish and AA centreman.

Geez, you are talking about a bloke who hasn't played a game...

I'd be shifting all of yours down a notch (your B should be the A, and so on). Surely par is working his way into the side and does well and shows potential. This is basically a first year kid...

These are both valid points, I guess my expectations are a bit lower this year given he's had a pretty major op and he's missed a big chunk of pre-season.
Well I can't take the credit, I basically stole the idea from the Freo board.
Take the kudos and run with it. No need for semantics here ;)

Collingwood F.C.

A: Shocks everyone. Plays fast attacking footy. Finishes top 4. Wins Grand Final.
B: Exceeded expectations. Plays good team footy. Finishes top 6. Wins 2 finals
C: Makes it into finals. Showing patches of brilliance. Finishes top 8. Wins 1 final.
D: Up and down all year. Frustrating to watch. Finishes in the same place as 2014.
E: Completely unravels. Bucks under enormous pressure. Finishes in bottom 6.

Excellent concept

Levi Greenwood

A - 22 games, 25 disposals per game, 18 goals for the season, 6+ clearances and tackles per game

B - 22 games, 20-24 disposals, < 10 goals, < 6 clearances/tackles per game

C - 22 games, < 20 disposals, < 10 goals, < 6 clearances/tackles per game and < 50% disposal efficiency

D - 15-20 games, < 20 disposals, < 10 goals, < 50% disposal efficiency, dropped to VFL due to form

E - < 15 games, < 15 disposals, unable to work his way into the side after being dropped due to form

Broomhead: Eaten by wolves (1-2 weeks)

I was going to write one for Paul Seedsman, but on reflection us mere mortals have no right to place any expectations on the Great one. For what he delivers is what he sees fit to give us. All hail Seed.

Geez, you are optimistic... I'd probably go with:

A. Plays great attacking football, finishes top 4, wins two finals.
B. Makes it into the lower tier of the 8, and despite getting eliminated in first round, shows admirable fight.
C. Youngsters take on big roles, but Collingwood misses finishing 1-2 spots outside the 8.
D. Downward trajectory continues, albeit slowly. 12th placed finish.
E. Bottom 4. Bucks finished.
