Strategy Players who stayed after failed trade, and kicked on

In 1979 North offered Carlton champion Rod Ashman a huge contract to move clubs , which he accepted.

Unsurprisingly Carlton refused his clearance and Ashman stood out till August when North relinquished the offer. Ashman went back into the team but was injured in the last home and away game and missed the 1979 premiership.

However he was a key player in the 1981 & 1982 premierships. Copped a few injuries but also played in a couple of reserves premierships and was chairman of selectors after retiring as a respected Carlton champion. Gun footballer and from all accounts gun person.

I believe he virtually did sign with West Coast before it was taken to court.
At the time, Buckenara was about to sign the highest contract in football history as he was a prodigy in his youth over in WA and there were a lot of Victorian clubs lining up to get him.
It had nothing to do with Hawthorn as he loves the club to this day purely family and personal reasons at the time. It fell through and he managed to sort it out with his family over there and played the rest of his career with us.

Not exactly a failed trade but Sam Flanders in 2023 was all but set to join the Hawks post-season until Dew was finally sacked and Dimma took over.

Flipped his decision making and he's turned into a phenomenal player ever since.

Oh man.

That's another case of the Hawks targeting a player that suits them perfectly.

Bloody Hawks have a great list team.

Dusty never wanted or requested a trade out. Ralph Carr used North and GWS to bump up his commission.
You have obviously never heard some of the afl media and players managers talk about this.
He was going to GWS and it was stopped by the AFL. They don’t know exactly who stopped it but it was

LOL absolute bullshit. Why on earth would the AFL stop the best player in the league going to an expansion club? That would have been a dream scenario for them.

Your reaction to my previous post and reply is enough for me to understand the type of supporter I’m chatting do.

The legend, Peter Matera quit the Eagles at the end of 97 for Melbourne who were throwing around a whole load of dodgy salary cap money at the time (that saw them later kicked out of the draft for 2 years if I remember right)

Matera told the club he was off and was set to join the Dees via the 1998 Pre Season draft.

Was enormous news in WA, total media circus - the guy was a superstar who had just played probably his best season of footy.

Woosha rounded up the troops for a Hail Mary mission to get him to stay and he did a backflip and re-signed with the Eagles.

Phew. I’d have never got over it. 😅

Depends what you want to you believe. Ralph Carr is also on record saying he was never leaving.

The story goes that GWS asked Dusty who his idols were and he said Chocco Williams and Dimma. And they said no worries, thanks for coming.
The article posted is literally Ralph Carr talking about Dusty was going to be at GWS and it was stopped by a phone call from above.

Its quotes of him talking on AFL Trade Radio. So who do you want to believe?

Ryan O'Keefe

Was probably already a solid player when he was on the trade table circa-2008, but he ended up staying and won a B&F, another Premiership, Norm Smith, and was definitely a better player...

I find that hard to believe I’ve heard when he met with gws and toured there facilities he was extremely uninterested gubby Alan actually said to him your not really interested in coming here are you
