was his moment of fame standing in front of jonathan brown freight training at him at the gabba one time?
Yep, few ever truly recover from that sort of thing

it was - ain't it a terrible shame?

If you watch the ABC replay of the '79 GF, they have a much better angle and it shows the ball was above the line, not over.

But let's not let the facts get in the way of legend.

Suddenly I feel like a party pooper.

Bust: Jimmy Plunkett.

He was so dominant in the '01 elim final vs Adelaide, I thought "that's our inside mid to replace Ratten".
he was too busy living reliving his former glory as max walker's pitchman.

i saw him doing a really evangelical pitch for leading teams awhile back. wonder where he is now?

I always thought the angle on the live coverage was good enough as it was to be able to tell it was in.
Has always amused me some Pie fans get knickers in a knot being told by others it was out. Harmesy himself has a lot of fun with winding them up.

BOOM - Michael Jamison, every match he played so well down back ... I was always still surprised

BUST - Matt Watson, that boot! He had all the raw attributes to be a great player, just not enough mentally IMO

I do not think we can be too hard on him. He obviously had very very deep personal issues that we do not know all about. Unless we walked in his shoes we do not know how he came to be that way.
As aside from his mental and emotional make up he also had horrible luck with injuries.
I remember weird stuff of him being injured, out for weeks, plays a reserve game, kicks 10 goals then out again injured. I think in the end he only played 2 senior games. I remember him kicking some crazy ass goal in Perth one night, that athletic Buddy Franklin would be envious off for a big guy. He would have been taller than Buddy too but moved like a race horse. Gorringe was like a D grade version of him.

May be slightly off topic but we've certainly recruited more than our share of "talented" guys whose heads were not where they needed to be.

I sometimes wonder if we ever "reference checked" or interviewed these guys - how could we just keep getting it so wrong??

Thank God we nailed some great rookie picks along the way.

2000 National Draft:

1. N. Riewoldt
2. J. Koschitzke
3. A. Didak
4. L. Livingston

This draft was before the dark days crashed upon us, and I remember thinking how good Luke might become.

Still have one of the heritage guernseys with his #4, but now I pretend it was Kernahan's.

Busts
Livingston - Early pick we though might become a useful tall. Struggled to become a defender in a crap side, terrible kick, briefly tried forward before delisting.
Norman - Ability but you know the rest.
Angwin - See above.
Russell - High pick who showed a bit and played some decent footy but never had composure or neat disposal.
Bower - Early enough pick, rated and played some decent footy but never developed strong defensive skills for a tall, never got good enough as a rebounder.
Yarran - Played some really good footy but never reached full potential then life got the better of him.
Lucas - high pick, showed potential early, never overcome some glaring deficiencies (tackling, intent, attack, kicking).
Watson - Early pick, in the team early, showed some promise but not good enough. Played too short and too slow.
McCathy - Rated highly but went nowhere.
Mitchell - Rated highly and kicked bags at times in the VFL but didn't last long.
McInness - Was never a huge fan but though he may have done a little better.
O'Keeffe - Looked like a good strong bodied athlete who had too many injuries.
Menzel - Early pick, looked like a talented goal kicker but has not made it in the AFL.

Booms
Armfield - Lateish pick with a long career who got everything out of himself.
Thornton - Rookie draft pick with decent hands slow legs not a great kick and not overly tall and held up a key defensive role in some poor sides. Read the play ok. Was never great but better than expected.
Jamieson - Skinny bloke with dodgy shoulders picked in the rookie draft and became a good lockdown defender.
Casboult - Slow ruckman who has become a decent forward/ruckman with great hands.
Duigan - Taken really late as a mature aged player and played some good footy.
Ed Curnow - Player with poor disposal who failed at Adelaide but came in through the VFL and has become a good player with improved disposal.
Rowe - Picked late as a mature age player, Hands didn't look good enough as a forward and too small for a ruckman, has made it as a solid defender.
Carrazzo - Rookie draft player with average skills finished as a good ball winner and tagger.
Simpson - Light player who could hardly get a touch early days has finished as a premier defender in the competition.

A couple from the 80s.
BOOM - Paul Meldrum , very good player who played 158 games for us and represented Victoria. Not bad for a local bloke who just turned up at training and asked if he could train with the club.

BUST - Warren Ralph , gun full forward from WA kicked over a 100 goals in the WAFL for three years before playing for us in 1984. Kicked 9 goals in his first game and had 35 after 7 games, looked on track for a 100 goal season and then just faded and only played 20 or so games over 3 years. Not sure if he was injured or just lost touch but never was able to capture the form he showed in WA. Never saw a player who kicked the ball higher than him.

BUST:

I have plenty but will start with; Josh Bootsma

Recall watching him just after we'd picked him up and thought to myself; Where did this guy come from?
Made Yarran look slow when he ran him down, kicked like a mule and reached over 195cm players to spoil.

I thought to myself, "what can't this guy do?"
Unfortunately I found that out much too early.

Pffft, looked a lemon from the get-go, I struggle to understand why he was drafted in the first place.

Troy Menzel

I thought so much of him early on but...

Gave everyone a reason for optimism in his first year but never ever went any further than that, sadly, the club got duped as well and offered him a contract extension.

If he was recruited under the SOS/Bolton regime, he would have been shown the door way earlier IMO.

BUST: Stephen Oliver - Thought he would be a 100 goal FF. Had the ability but not the want

BOOM: Liam Jones - Still don't see how it happened

Saw Oliver play, and he damn well could too.

Why he wanted to stay in Castlemaine and beat up the little kids every year (ie. kick 150 goals like it was shelling peas) will forever be something I cannot fathom.

As for Jones, I still want him to deliver a 'full' season in defence but gee, he has been a revelation that no-one saw coming.
