Bontempelli is obviously a star, but even with the League's other elite midfielders, who are also stars.
Darcy is going to be next level. We will be comparing him to all time greats.
I do that with Bont.

It's really pleasing and a good sign for our prospects that our wings and small forwards (Davidson, Williams, Vandermeer and to a lesser extent McNiel) have started the year really well. Those areas have been a huge weakness the last few years.

It's our mids and backs who are a bit iffy at the moment (seeing a lot of compliments for Buku and Jones but at the end of the day their 3 main forwards kicked 10 goals). The bright side is that Bont coming in immediately solves the midfield issue, and then Treloar eventually improves again. Backs are a worry but if Bramble or Duryea find form again then we should be okay.

From tonight:
* Sanders was diabolical in the first half. His aversion to running forward was bordering on comical and at one point he had a clear lane to launch into 50 and literally turned backwards away from it. Cost us a shot on goal. Once Bont is back he needs a good 5 game stint in the VFL to learn how to impose himself on a game.

* Dale was bad in the first half but it was mostly from trying to take the game on. We are so reliant on his rebound at the moment which is exacerbated by playing 3 talls.

* 7 talls is too many. Either Khamis or JOD need to go.

* It seems to have clicked for Vandermeer and he's adding a lot to our team.

* English was actually good in the ruck contest tonight and not great around the ground. He's lost confidence in his marking and doesn't look like clunking them at all anymore. If he held into 3-4 which he should have then he'd have had quite a good game.

Bailey Dale is an incredible footballer too.

And we should ask the AFL for a please explain about the Darcy review. Was just as bad as anything we saw last week.
Richo nailed it in the post game.

(I'm paraphrasing here) One of the commentators said, "yeah it was hardly sufficient proof to overturn the soft call of a goal but Darcy knew it wasn't a goal - maybe they ought to have a rule that commonsense should prevail", to which Richo replied "I think that's exactly what they did".

So often the umps and officials seem to make it up as they go, but I reckon on this one they made the right call.

Has there ever been a key forward with height of Darcy who competes at ground level as well as he does? Amazing.

For selection integrity Bramble has to go, needs a spell.
Selection integrity requires someone to come in from the VFL. Who are you picking over Bramble?

Got flashbacks of that dodgy Stengle goal review during Gather Round when they overturned Darcy’s snap, of which a man his height had no business even completing.

There’s a 16 and 21 vibe about the way the team’s playing this year. There’s not just a reliance on pure talent to get the team home there’s a sustainability there again. Instead of the frustrating throwing the magnets around early in the season that’s so often happened, there’s seems to be a lot better understanding of roles in the team this year.

Naughton played probably his worst ever game. Richards, Dale and Freijia who have been the most damaging players with the ball this year were all well down, but the team still managed to completely turn things around in game.

It was 100% the right call…but they broke the protocol to make it.

Buku role as been amazing this year
His confidence in the air and in defence is great to watch

Save the game so many times tonight

Dolan was huge in the last.
How often did we say last year that what was killing us were our i50 entries?

So how beautiful was it to see him lower his eyes at a crucial pressure-filled moment late in the game and provide Darcy with an easy mark and goal. He was an important factor in us getting up in that last quarter.

That's the justification for drafting him just before other clubs got in, and playing him in the seniors well before expected.

He will only get better.

Brilliant victory.

It really can’t be overstated just how well we are playing at the moment with the players we have out.

We are currently one kick away from being unbeaten with our captain/best player out, another of our best midfielders, two of our best goal kickers, and a bunch of others who would be incredibly valuable.

Shout outs tonight:

Davidson - JFC, where did that come from? Outstanding match. His last quarter was one for the ages.

Kennedy - Geez, cheers Carlton. What a pick up he’s been. Love him.

Buku - best game he’s played for the club. Thrilled for him, he was great.

Libba - Just an absolute legend, absolutely irreplaceable.

Dale - Has really stood up this season.

Williams - Feel he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

McNeill - I admit, I’m not his biggest fan. But he has a huge heart, and nailing that goal, and that tackle - both were huge.

Naughton - Almost literally could not have played worse, but nailed the crucial goal to get us in front.

Just an outstanding win, really pumped and proud of the team.

Anyone who can defend, he isn’t providing any run at all.
Who do you suggest? Only options would seem to be:
  • Poulter, but will possibly already need to replace Baker and shift Williams back
  • Coffield, but possibly too tall if already playing Jones + Lobb + Buku
  • Duryea, but most on hear were suggesting he needed to be dropped for selection integrity too
I'd be tempted to play Sanders as a back pocket to get some intensity into his game and force him to kick the ball foward, but appreciate others won't agree.

The Ch 7 commentary team were saying how hot it was in the rooms after the match. This was around 10:30pm or later They also said that the Bulldogs had requested the roof be opened because there was no likelihood of rain.

I reckon the closed roof played into our hands - the heat might have taken more of a toll on Carlton than us. Congrats to our fitness and conditioning team if that's the case..

I was cooked up on level 3
Generally a healthy issue having the roof close with the humidity
