Thought I'd start a thread on the annual Prime Ministers' XIII v PNG Kumuls match to be played in Port Moresby on 28 September.

Last year the Kumuls almost ran us down in the second half with the game ending in a 24 - All draw.

The squad (which is made up of players from teams not currently taking part in the 2008 Finals Series):

Jarryd Hayne, Nathan Merritt (*), Michael Jennings, Joel Monaghan, Josh Morris, Terry Campese, Scott Prince, Carl Webb, Robbie Farah, Ben Cross, Nathan Hindmarsh (capt), Luke O'Donnell, Alan Tongue. Interchange: Craig Wing, Chris Heighington, Cory Paterson, Joe Picker. 18th man: Chris Lawrence. Coach: Mal Meninga.

(*) Replaced Wendall Sailor who withdrew from squad.

Good to see guys like Campese getting a go in the Green & Gold... and Corey Paterson who will be the first born and bred Western Australian to represent Australia... :thumbsu:

good to see Campese rewarded for a great 2nd half of season....:thumbsu:
not a bad side tbh, would give a few WC teams a run for money

PNG side named... 7 from outside PNG, 13 from PNG's SP Cup.

PM’s XIII named

Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League has announced a 20-man squad to take on the visiting Australians.
The PNG Prime Ministers 13 was released yesterday.
The squad is dominated by SP Cup players with 13 players while seven are overseas based plaers.
Four new faces have been included into the side. They are Dominic Angra and Ham Tee from Eagles, Junior Ropra (Lahanis) and Opisa Pomba (Muruks).
Angra and Pomba are the surprise selections who pushed their way in due to their performances after Eagles and Muruks made the SP Cup grand final last Sunday.
Angra is an electrifying winger and has shone for Eagles this season and has scored a try in almost every match.
Ropra’s workaholic play also earned him a place in the PM’s 13.
National chairman of selectors Arnold Krewanty said the inclusion of Pomba and Tee was on merit.
“I honestly think they deserve to be in the team because they have been consistent in their performance leading up into the final series of the SP Cup,” Krewanty said. He said Stanley Gene, Makali Aizue who plays for Hull Kingston Rovers in United Kingdom and John Wilshire who plays for Salford in England were also named to add the much needed experience to the side.
“Some of the overseas based players were brought in to add experience to the side,” Krewanty said.
He said out of the 20 named, three will be omitted after medical and fitness tests are conducted during the training session. Players from outside of Port Moresby will be flying into the nation’s capital next Monday to go into a one week training camp.
Pomba in receiving the news yesterday said he was over the moon.
He said he had been waiting patiently for that and pledged to put “200 per cent effort” into this game time.
Meanwhile the Australian Prime Ministers 13 will arrive in the country on Friday next week, two days before the game kicks off on September 28.
The Australian PM’s 13 will have most of the players from clubs that did not make the NRL finals.
They will be coached by Mal Meninga.

The PNG National newspaper gives us the actual team list...

http://www.thenational.com.pg/091808/sport1.php

The full squad: John Wilshire, Michael Mark, Tu’u Maori, Larsen Marabe, Dominic Angra, Stanley Gene, Keith Peter, Makali Aizue, Charlie Wabo, Rodney Pora, Nixon Kolo, Joseph Omai, Francis Ray, Jessie Joe, Junior Ropra, Paul Aiton, Rod Griffin, Opisa Pomba, Ham Tee and Menzie Yere.

Good to see RL being involved in helping develop anti-AIDS programs in PNG... In a week where we have the Broncos controversy it's good to remember the good our game can achieve in a place like PNG. :thumbsu:

On the road to World cup

Yesterday the Telikom PNG Kumul’s squad for the PM’s XIII Challenge against the Australian’s was announced.
The squad of 20 players mostly dominated by SP CUP players have played themselves into selection contention to make up the final 13 players that will take the field against the might of the Australian’s next Sunday.
Full credit must go to each of the players selected, as it has been through their determination, commitment and consistency of efforts on the field that has earned these players the privilege to wear the red, gold and black Kumul jumper.
Arnold Krewanty, the national chairman of selectors said the team has some fresh faces along with notable players to establish a blend of much needed experience and youth. The Australians on the other hand are seasoned campaigners from the NRL who will no doubt be serving their best on game day.
However, if last year’s thrilling encounter against the Australians is any indication of what to expect, then the rugby league fans of PNG will be in for an entertaining game of rugby league of the highest level right down to the final whistle. Fans of rugby league can expect that the Telikom Kumuls will do PNG proud come game time. As the adage goes “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog”
An important note to remember is that the PM’s Challenge is an event sponsored by AusAid to highlight the concerning issue of HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea. The Prime Minister’s XIII rugby league match between Australia and Papua New Guinea is an important event utilising a high profile sport like rugby league through its players, sport administrators and especially the loyal spectators as an avenue to spread messages and awareness about HIV.
Further the game represents the strong relationship between Australia and PNG, both on and off the field and Telikom PNG’s social corporate responsibility in supporting social concerns such as the fight against HIV/AIDS in PNG.

I'd love to see PNG win this.

But what I'd love most of all is.

Results between the two nations since 2001. The full test in 2005 was a blow-out but besides that pretty even contests with the PMs XIII and Junior Kangaroos.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papua_New_Guinea_national_rugby_league_team#KUMULS_Results

2007: Papua New Guinea Drew Australia PM XIII 24-24
2006: Australia PM XIII def. Papua New Guniea 28-8 Lloyd Robson (Port Moresby)
2005: Australia def. Papua New Guinea 70-22 Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville
2004: Australia def. Papua New Guinea 32-20 Lloyd Robson (Port Moresby)
2003: Papua New Guinea def. Junior Kangaroos 24-22 Lloyd Robson (Port Moresby)
2003: Australia PM XIII def. Papua New Guinea 32-0 Lloyd Robson (Port Moresby)
2002: Junior Kangaroos def. PNG President XIII 28-16 Lloyd Robson (Port Moresby)
2001: Australia PM XIII def. Papua New Guinea 32-6 Danny Leahy Oval (Goroka)

Some bookin channel out here put it on so people like me can see it.

If only. Even just seeing the crowd would be pretty entertaining - they go absolutely nuts - also it would be great to see the SP Cup players in action. Not sure if the all new PNG National broadcaster is showing it - you'd expect they would.

Unfortunately, John Wilshere (Salford Reds - who are in the National League Grand Final) and forward Makali Aizue (Hull KR) are out of the PNG side.

Also, the PNG Origin game has been announced...

The former Maroons captain also assured the public that the Kumuls selection match between PNG Residents (Reds) and PNG Internationals (Yellows) will be played on Oct 12, and confirmed that it was the official Kumuls selection arena.

“The PNG Origin match will take centre stage for Kumuls selection. However, guys in the current PM’s XIII have the opportunity to further push their claim for the Kumuls jumper for the World Cup,” Lam said.

It would be great if they showed this game on TV. People up in trees and roofs. The TV money could go straight to the charities.

Australia's Prime Minister's XIII was given a huge welcoming reception on Friday after arriving in rugby league-mad PNG.

Thousands of locals lined the streets and packed the Port Moresby airport hoping to catch a glimpse of their league heroes.

The Australians are in town for their annual clash with the Kumuls, PNG's national side, in what is one of the country's biggest sporting events....

More than 5,000 locals will pack into the city's small rugby league stadium for the match. Hundreds more will mill outside, while others up take vantage spots in the nearby trees.

PNG's footy passion, frustration with team performances and lack of discipline has led in the past to crowd violence and police firing tear gas.

CumberlandAshes I got a question for you...

What if someone like Corey Paterson, born and bred in a state other than QLD/NSW (in his case WA), played his first senior footy WA, was good enough to play for Australia and could even make it in origin, who would he play for in state of origin?

Daniel Holdsworth is another Western Australian in the NRL for the Canterbury Bulldogs.

SEVERAL Australian players put their names forward for World Cup selection as the Prime Minister's XIII completed a 54-30 rout of Papua New Guinea.

Led by skipper Nathan Hindmarsh, the Australian team scored 10 tries to six in an entertaining and fiery encounter at Lloyd Robson Oval.

Parramatta winger Jarryd Hayne and Wests Tigers youngster Chris Lawrence both bagged doubles while Hindmarsh, Robbie Farah, Michael Jennings, Joe Picker, Carl Webb and Josh Morris also scored.

Papua New Guinea's Stanley Gene also scored twice and was the pick of the Kumuls in the hot and windy conditions.

Australia were held to a respectable 22-16 halftime lead before a dominant final second stanza saw them run away with the contest.

The result was in stark contrast to last year's game when the Australians surrendered a halftime lead in the 24-all draw.

The game was the last chance for several Australian World Cup hopefuls to press for selection before the 24-man squad is announced on October 7.

It was 22 - 16 at half-time... so not a bad result for the Kumuls - especially with most of the NRL and SL players not included.

The result was in stark contrast to last year's game when the Australians surrendered a halftime lead in the 24-all draw.

After the match Nathan Hindmarsh, while giving one lucky local his footy boots, said it was the brutal encounter he expected.

"It was tough, especially the first half, we couldn't seem to hold the ball," he said.

"We let them score a few tries and the crowd got really behind them and really lifted them."

Today's game was the last chance for several Australian World Cup hopefuls to press for selection before the 24-man squad is announced on October 7.

Australia's coach Mal Meninga said while happy with the win conditions made it a difficult to chart players' performances for World Cup selection.

"The field's rock hard, it's hot as buggery, you are playing against a pretty committed Kumuls side," he said.

"They (PNG) were really good today, very aggressive in the way they played but our boys just hung in there pretty well.

"Charlie (Carl) Webb was pretty good, Benny Cross, Nathan Hindmarsh, Luke O'Donnell was good, Robbie Farah - they all deserve an opportunity to be earmarked for a spot in the World Cup.

"They put their best foot forward today so we see what happens.

"This Kumul side improved - they'll pick a pretty good side too."

PNG coach Adrian Lam said he will select a World Cup side after another internal match.

"We've improved but we've got an origin-style match before we make a final decision," he said.

Locals packed the stadium with hundreds more outside and others taking vantage spots in the nearby trees.

Police crowd control required several warning shots to be fired, especially in post-match jubilance that saw hundreds swarm both the Australian and PNG side.

I read somewhere that these players could choose which they wanted to play for - but it would probably be determined by the location of the NRL club they first played for (?)... but I don't know where to find the actual eligibility to confirm this. Perhaps we'll find out when one of these players is picked by one or the other - and what happens?

lol
unfair for us QLD as we only have 3 clubs to your 10!

Yes - but I doubt that Queensland would try and claim a player who grew up in WA and is playing for a NSW-based club.

It's more likely that NSW would try and claim a player currently playing for a NSW-based team who grew up in WA and was graded there.

I guess we'll wait and see the shenanigans when it happens.

NSW will probably take the interstaters, afterall, you've stolen all the players from ACT.
"Nah they're not from ACT.. they're from Quenbeyan, which is in NSW." ;)

Well, the Raiders were based in NSW (Seiffert Oval, Quenbeyan) from 1982 to 1989... ;)
