Hi guys!

We're back for a second season, better than ever!

The first podcast has been released this morning for you to listen to, as we preview the game against the Giants, as well as taking a look back at our Pre-Season. We also give our tips and predictions for the AFL Season ahead.

This season we want YOU to get more involved in the podcast though. That's why each week we'll be asking a footy question in this thread and we'll discuss some of the best answers on the show, as well as inviting you on if you're willing to do so!

This week's question:

If we had a fully fit squad to choose from, who would be your starting six forwards, and why? What tactics/structure would you employ for them?

OK here's a crack at it though I'm sure I've forgotten someone.

Tippet, Goodes, Rohan, Buddy, Harry/BJ, Jetta.

Tippet playing out of the square either leading or using his strength to win one-on-ones. Without Jesse White to spoil him he should be very effective. Goodes at CHF. Buddy and Rohan as HF flankers and Harry/BJ or Jetta in pockets. I really don't like Jetta in defence and would prefer to see him working forward of the centre. Reid would be lurking on the wings and pushing forward. Rohan and Buddy could also go for a romp and drag their defenders out. Harry, Jetta and BJ have the speed to hit the loose ball hard and fast as crumbers and have good defensive skills. Goodes would rotate into the midfield to upset his match-up with Reid or resting ruck man taking his role. LRT could also go forward. Jetta would be encouraged to move up to the wing following play with the ability to hurt hard on rebound. ROK could also drift forward as a HF flank option when the old man needs a rest. I'd also like to see Mitchell play forward rotating through the middle. Macca could also do some serious damage.

So many options. It really depends on the opposition.

Forgot Parker. Might swap him for Jetta as he has a better defensive play. Then again he's been doing well in the midfield. Thing with Jetta is I want to see him swoop on balls and move the ball forward quickly but he is also pretty handy closer to goal. He's also a bit of a worry for defenders.

This week's question:

Reid, Tippett, BJ
Franklin, Goodes, Rohan

Tippett to play a traditional FF role, Goodes/Reid in the pockets, Franklin owning the 40-60m arc, BJ crumbing off Tippett (see the Melb game), Rohan leading straight up the ground using pace to burn all comers.

I will always back Tip in a one on one situation, would be bloody hard to double team him with players like Goodes and Franklin needing minding. Yes it's a tall line, but Buddy, Goodes and Rohan are excellent below the knees, as is Tippett for a massive man. BJ and Rohan will have immense fwd pressure, and Franklin doesn't mind a chase and tackle either.

Clean entry will be crucial, soon as the 50 gets clogged up it's gonna be hard for these guys to be effective, but then you've got proven midfield goalkickers in that space too.

You could alternate Benny in for BJ, but apparently he is carving up his new mid role, so happy with my set up :)

Rotating mid (BJ/Parker/Mcglynn) Tippett/Reid
Rohan/Franklin/ Jetta

Feel that this gives us a good blend and flexibility with the possibilities of resting our KPF and Smalls with LRT, Goodes in bursts and rotating mids to rest deep or on HFF.

Reid, Tippett, LRT
McGlynn, Franklin, Goodes

Load up with 5 talls and chuck in a midget in there just to confuse things.

Your not hinting at us trying to recruit Simon Phillips again?

Rohan - Reid - Goodes
McGlynn - Tippett - Franklin

Tippett to play out of the goal square , Reid will be playing higher up the ground this season ala before he got injured last year and taking his defender up the ground and that lets Tippett to have space and not get double teamed ala Franklin also , Franklin is 198cm but once the ball hits the deck he becomes a rover as well ( freak of an athlete ) defenders just cant go with him as he turns them inside out most times , he is most dangerous closer to goal even if he cant mark over his head , if we use the well going into the 50 Buddy will 3 steps ahead of his opponent on the lead. Goodes and Rohan playing HF they both are extremely hard match ups due to there height and speed and they both can take a grab and use the ball well, once they get it over back no point in chasing them , McGlynn puts on great defensive pressure and normally a good shot for goal.
Cant see BJ or Harry getting a game if we are fully fit , BJ is still to raw for me

Keep them coming guys, we also played around with the idea of giving the week's 'best winner' the ability to change SM's signature into whatever they wanted for the week, I guess you could call it adding a bit of friendly fun into the game.

Alternatively if you have a question you'd like to talk about for next weeks thread - post them in the bottom of your post and if it has enough support we will use it for the next week's question as opposed to just us setting them!

Look forward to seeing the answers and discussing them in next weeks podcast!

No we didn't. I shut this idea down straight away. Don't lie.

As much as I would love to pile in on SM, you can't bet you signature. Avatars however that are tasteful....

He mentioned avatars too. That's handy then! Yeah I remember him agreeing sig or avatar bets after the podcast, yeah Bonz?

He said he preferred a signature change as he doesn't have one, but was willing to settle for an avatar change.

I remember this. Okay, so best winner gets to pick SM's av/sig. Within site rules reason. Go wild.

So who won and what does SM have to change his avatar to?

I don't say this often but.. this week's is a real cracker. Really encourage everyone to give it a listen when it comes out. SR100 and Bonz were on top top form.

Episode 2 of the Podcast will be released later today, so be sure to tune in for an absolute cracker!

The question for this week (admittedly released rather late) is the Main-Board-thread-worthy question:

Where are GWS at? Where do you see them finishing this year? What did we learn about them from the loss?

I think we know now that they are a proper AFL team and thus can't be taken lightly. I reckon they will still lose more than they win over the course of the season, maybe they'll win 8-10 games for the year.

What we learned, if a team gets access to a large number of early draft picks they eventually will start winning games. The challenge for them from here will be to build a sustainable following and establish a permanent foothold in the Sydney sporting landscape (i.e. not just expat Victorians who have adopted them as their second team, but actually attract members who are totally new to AFL). At the moment, to steal an old idea from a TED talk by Derek Sivers (youtube it, it's great!) they are still a bunch of lone nuts on a hillside waiting for enough followers so they can become a movement.

BTW good show guys, I pretty much agree with your deconstruction of the game. That storm was intense, worst conditions I've experienced at a game of footy in over ten years.

Will try to give the podcast a bit of a plug on twitter. The split round in round 1 makes it a bit difficult I must admit.

We'll have another one next week with a Pies supporter on for a preview of that game so might be a bit easier to plug that one.
