JPOD was restricted against StKilda because they blocked his path.
Their hard runing blocked his straight leads because of the numbers they had in the corridor. The delivery was also poor.

We all no the game plan StKilda has and therefore have time to adjust.

The ball must enter the forward zone more quickly
Iff they get in front MAN UP. They will pass it around and soak up time. They control the tempo of the game
The niggle will be used, do not get sucked in
Want it more than them

It is good to loose as we can see our shortcommings and adjust

Re: JPOD restrictd

That's why we need Tom Hawkins or Ottens as the third tall to create some push and shove.
The little blokes with minimal size don't cut it against a large aggressive backline, I've been saying it all year, but so many Geelong supporters are worried about fielding 3 talls, its a joke.
Those little guys were just man-handled out of the game.
Varcoe, Byrnes and Stokes.

Umpires have got to watch St Kilda's screening off the ball tactics,
and start paying frees rather than giving them everything.
I mean that whacka playing on Johnson, where were the umpires?

Yes, but the weather didn't help the J-POD either..

On reflection if there was a choice I'd probably pick Tomahawk over J-Pod in conditions like last night. Fortunately it's not a zero-sum game, our best forward line probably has both in it.

Re: JPOD restrictd

Personally I thought we looked tall and slow up front. Pods and Mooney's space was always going to be blocked last night, and with the weather I never really expected them to do much.

But the lack of forward work rate by SJ, Varcoe, Byrnes (and obviously no Chappy) left us with zero to kick to.

We normally have players running forward from a contest in to space up front. But we simply weren't doing it. Our small/mid forwards, were sucked up to half forward, but rarely pushed back hard enough when the opportunity presented itself.

Work rate reality check for some guys.

Sorry for the intrusion but some credit to Gwilt he stuck with him but also ran off him really well.

Terrible conditions for Pods though, didn't suit him at all, and he did have no space to lead into except for one passage in the last - seemed strange to see him in space.

Agree Gwilt was good, I think our coaching allowed him to play a bigger role than he might have.

Only reason he was restricted was because we consistently bombed it long to our key forwards with 3 or 4 Saints players drifting off their men.
Time and time again there were 3 or 4 cats players floating around the 50, with 3 or 4 saints players clogging it up 10-20m out from goal. Can't expect Pods or Moons to mark anything in the wet with 4 blokes on them.

Gwilt's continual holding of Pods didn't help either. His path wasn't blocked, it was more that he was continually held so he couldn't get into his path. :thumbsd:

Absolutely infuriating that both Pods and Moons were molestered all night, yet Scarlett slightly infringes down the other end, and they get a free kick. Yes, it might have been there, but is it too much to ask for a bit of consistency?

This is the AFL - yes I'm afraid it is.

Totally agree on all points, the same thing happened in last years granny but our desparation won through, remember they are defenively coached by the games greatest infringer Steve Silvangi.

They employ all his holding, scragging and screening methods, but they do it so consistently, some how the umps turn the blind eye.
Or are they biased by the media's favored team?

Just worries me if the umps are going to ensure a Saints flag this year.

I thought the main problem (apart from the blatant and consistent blocking/holding 50 meters off the ball) was that we bombed it in long when we had no-one there and tried to pinpoint passes when we did have numbers inside 50. We should have done the opposite.

SOS was the scragger of the century. Not fit to lick the boots of Scarlo, Dench, and many other great FBs. Invented the arm around the waist school of cheating. It lives on at St Kilda.

We are all enjoying the emergence of Pods, he is an amazing talent, and comes across as a humble and fantastic guy.

Gwilt is similarly a good footy story, began by playing suburban footy at Noble Park in the EFL.

Played very well last night and was given BOG by many, it's taken a bit of time for our Jimmy to gain in confidence, but he is a good story...

Personally, looking forward to seeing more of these happy ever afters :thumbsu:

Exactly, the way we used the ball we made life incredibly difficult for him and Mooney.

Honestly I worry about people's expectations sometimes. Apart from the one 2 minutes into the game where Gwilt took the mark, he didn't get outmarked all night, he still kept contesting and did his best to bring it to ground, but when the ball gets bomed onto your head and you have 3 defenders, what more can you do? Good example is when Gamble takes that mark on the boundary in the 3rd, and Pods is in the square, with Gwilt and 2 other defenders, and instead of spearing it in so he can try and get it on a lead, he bombs it high behind his head so the 3 defenders can kill it. Combine that with all the holding and the weather, and I think he's entitled to have an off day so long as he still competes, which he did.

I also must say we didn't coach well re this, for the 2 quarters play was up my end, the number of times we lined up for a centre bounce with Pods and Moons with their opponents in the square (usually being held) with Fisher, and sometimes additional defenders, 10m in front of them, really gave them no chance. I would hope we address this next time we play them. As Bomber said a few weeks ago, "our 3 tall forwards have shown they are dangerous when we get it in to an even numbered contest"...well last night we didn't give them one.

We've had 30 more free kicks paid against us than we have for us this year. To put this in perspective, you have had three more paid against than for.

Clearly the umpires love us. Remembering that you also got a soft 50 last night that resulted in a goal.

Oh wow, we got a soft 50 that resulted in a goal. Big ****ing deal. That pales into insignificance compared to the armchair ride your mob got in that 3rd term. Not only did you get two goals from free kicks in that term, you also got two as a direct result of two free kicks that should've been paid to Geelong, but weren't. The first one was when Taylor Hunt was held without the ball by Hayes, which led to Steven kicking a goal, and the second was when Enright was tackled high, resulting in Steven kicking another goal. Then there was that abysmal free kick you got at the end of the game when Milne should've been penalised for holding the ball.

Complaining about the umpires is the last thing a Saints supporter should be doing. I'm actually surprised Shaun Ryan hasn't squeezed in for a vote on your board. He was probably your best player on the night.

Dont think the 3 tall system is the answer, but having the second ruckman as a marking forward helps.

I dont like having stokes in these kinds of games, he is just way too small and weak.

Against the super flood you need guys like chapman and rooke.

Thanks Cynical,

Don't like to say negetives about Varcoe, but 11 possessions for the game, I know people howl if you criticise the bloke, but he never does much in the hard games.
Worries me if he'll be a passenger in the finals when the balls white hot.
But what do you do?... 3 bantamweights is at least 1 to many (Varcoe, Stokes and Byrnes) we really missed the third big body. Chappys muscle was sorely missed as well.

Not sure if Mooney was 100% either, could have been rushed back to give
Pods some support?

Not sure whinging about the umpiring serves either of us any purpose Winty.

There were plenty of occasions the umpires put the whistle away, and it benefited both sides....was there even a holding the ball decision all night?

I thought the two biggest shockers were the Milne free in the dying minutes, I can admit it was terrible. Also in the second quarter when the umpire got in the way of our kick that would of been a St Kilda uncontested mark in space just outside the 50. Should of been a ball up, instead you guy intercepted and goaled and took momentum from that moment.

Friday told me that, despite what some may think, we need Max Rooke. The guy is the best defensive forward we have and, if fit needs to be in the side. Stokes, Varcoe and Byrnes can't contest the ball and go as hard as he can and that's what we were lacking. His presence up forward was one of the reasons we won the GF against the Saints last year.

Don't know what his injury status in but I'd love to see him fit and ready.
