Today is the 80th anniversary of a surprisingly little-known event during World War 2.

Hitler's second-in-command at the time, Rudolf Hess, decided it would be a terrific idea to parachute into Scotland to try and negotiate a peace with some anti-war British politicans. Of course he was instantly arrested and detained for the remainder of the war before being extradited to Nuremberg to stand trial for war crimes and then spent the rest of his sad life in Spandau Prison until he killed himself in 1987 at age 93.
Had he held on another 280 days he would have spent exactly half his life in prison.

WHAT!?! Thats insane!
One of the easiest ways to illustrate the ridiculous number of stars there are in the universe is the Hubble Deep Field image

Hubble_ultra_deep_field.jpg

Every one of those coloured spots/dots is a galaxy made up of 10-100s of billions of stars. And that image is taken from a tiny area of space (equivalent to the size of a tennis ball seen 100m away) that was thought to be "empty" (in that there were no visible stars or galaxies in it using ground-based telescopes) prior to that image being taken

and zaphod beeblebrox is the most important person in the universe

I think its actually 24 zeros

70 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000
I only guessed 22 based on the fact that it had to a number that fit the formula (3^n + 1).

If I'd put a little more effort into thinking about it I should have figured out that its 25 for the below reason
Stupid not defining a septillion to be 10^ (3*7).
Can blame the weird modern English definition of billion (and the subsequent trillion/quadrillion etc) for that. The fact that billion isn't 10^(3x2)/ 2 sets of 3 zeros throws out what would be the logical way of expressing trillion/quadrillion etc

IIRC originally a billion was the equivalent of a million millions (instead of the thousand millions it is now in the Anglophone world), but I believe French maintains that system (although the fact that they don't have a word for 70, 80 or 90 means you can't exactly call their naming system of numbers any better)

Haha I was a trivia night a few years ago and there was this long-winded question about the 27 club. They started off mentioning folks like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix et cetera. Then the actual question came: "How long do we have to wait until Justin Bieber turns 27?"

Over to you, Justin.

Kurt Cobain has been dead longer than he was alive.

Born 20th February 1967
Died 5th April 1994

I wonder what a 54 year old Cobain would be like. Dave Grohl is 52 and still kicking around, ditto Eddie Vedder who is 57. But then I look at Dexter Holland from The Offspring (55) and my first thought is 'woah, the 90s were a while ago'.

Meanwhile, Art Alexakis from Everclear is 59 years old.

How much of an animal was Brian Jones, kicked out of the Rolling Stones because Keith Richards thought he did too many drugs

I like the stories about how he considered himself "the leader" despite being the rhythm guitarist (and sitar) so the rest let him be front and center on some album covers to shut him up
