Assuming Freo use their #1 pick for Croad and McPharlin, will Polack still be in the draft at number #3??

Lets not forget Hawthorn and StKilda are ahead of us (if the Freo/Hawthorn deal goes through)

Also, what position does Polack play?

Polack is a tall full forward who plays for East Fremantle. Didn't do much at the Under 18's National Carnival but it hasn't dampened all the hype about him. If Freo don't have first crack in the draft I think WC could just get him if the two Vic clubs go for local talent. Even if we do get the oppurtunity of drafting him, could he be a little over-rated?

Do we really need a Full Forward??

What about Cummings, Wilson and Busnan??

Even if Cummings and Wilson get the flick, Busnan should be given first crack at FF

Cummings: unfit, getting on, future uncertain.

Wilson: getting on, woefull kicking

Buszan: yet untested at AFL level, bad kicking and injury prone

Thats why we need a back up full forward as they could all be exiting withing a couple of years of each other. Plus he is the best talent in WA available. May as well draft him if we get the chance.

I am a HUGE fan of Buszan, but his kicking does leave a bit to be desired sometimes. Surely Polack can play other positions as well, as can buszan. For me, if Polack is available come our first pick, we GOTTA take him

Buszan also has something wrong with his ankle (hence the injury prone bit) and from reports, its a degenerative thing, like Millis injury sort of. He also isn't as tall as normal AFL full forwards so I'm starting to doubt whether he will be able to play AFL.

Personally, i have a vision of the future of seeing Dean Cox developing into a fine ruckman, with possible All Australian selection sometime in the future, and Michael Gardiner a dominating full forward.

If Cox is developed well enough, i think Gardiner could develop into a full forward, as good as there would be going around at the time. Very much in the mould of Paul Salmon.

Plus, Fremantle can't trade their number 1 pick, they can only trade their 4th pick. So they will probably take Polack as there is a shortage of tall forwards at Freo (i think, but dont quote me).

I've seen Polak play once, for East Fremantle versus West Perth, and he was superb - it was probably the most exciting individual performance in the WAFL I saw during the year (on his 17th birthday).

I could see him playing CHF or FF. Obviously you never know what injury or character tests lie ahead.

I doubt that Buszan will make it at AFL level, from what I've seen, nice person though he is and good WAFL player though he is - I also don't think he is mobile enough to play CHF. I think Wilson can hold that position for 2 more years. Cummings could be a star FF (and was for us for a year), but I question his mentality.

However, I think Freo will take Polak first, so it's all academic.

Yes i think Freo will most certainly take him in the draft. But if he is around then no doubt WC must pick him up. I hear he can play CHF and that is something WC has never ever had?? Wouldnt that be weird...a dominant CHF at the Eagles.

So I must be the only one who rates Buszan:( I reckon he does have the potential to be a star full forward, just needs to be taught how to kick properly, whoever taught fido we should get to help buszan. Yes, he has a bit of an ankle problem, think I found somewhere it isn't that bad, and should not hamper him too much, its more a management thing, like what we have done with merenda. He has Huge hands, a really strong mark, and usually reads the play pretty well. All he needs for mine is to learn to kick
BUT, if Polack is still available at pick #3 we'd be mad not to take him.

EKA - I rate Buszan too! He's definately got some talent there and the club would be stupid not to promote him from the rookie list next year.

If the Dockers give away their #1 pick to Hawthorn, is there a good chance they will snare Polak or will they look for Victorian talent? Plus St Kilda has the 2nd pick and like Riewoldt they look all around the country for the talent. I doubt Polak would still be around at #3 in the draft. So who do we get for our first pick? Sampi?

I think west coast is too obsessed with picking up WA players. They should pick the best player they can get their hands on, make him feel at home (maybe even fly his family in several times a year) and hope that he adjusts. If he doesn't like it, then we can always trade him for some other player of equal quality who does want to play for us.

I think we're more paranoid about missing out on quality players from WA who have gone on to do good things over east. (Simon Black, Dean Rioli, Chick, Hay)

Getting good players from over east works well for the first few years, but then they decide they have had enough and want to move back home (Gherig, Jeff White)

Exactly GoEagles.
You draft them, move them over here, teach them how to play footy, and then they nick off back home to Victoria. Na, gotta go the local players. D4E, I don't think you realise that they're is some REALLY good talent in WA, just as good as anywhere in Aus

What I'm saying is our priority should be drafting the good players from the WAFL first, as they are probably as good as any Victorian or even SA/NSW/Queensland player coming through, and then we also get to know that they will not get homesick. If the players in WA aren't good enough, then sure, go for the Vics, which is what we have done in the past with Braun, Wirra, Banfield? Morrison, Wooden? etc I am sure there is a couple more. Was Chambers?
Have these players brought success to the club, no, Our best teams were the 91-95 AND these consisted of 90% West Aussies I am sure. The Talent is here, why not use it

Don't you find it strange that WC only drafts Victorians and West Australians? Name one player we have drafted from elsewhere in Australia. There wouldn't be any in our current squad and few in our history as a club.

True, but what about Gaspar and Chick, how come they dont want to come back??

I think we should get the best player from wherever and do all we can to make sure he wants to stay

Josh Wooden (NSW)
Shane Bond & Brayden Lyle (SA - and still playing some footy in their "home" state).
David Hynes (SA) (but he's a big character and was quite mature when drafted I think)
Can't remember where Robbie West came from - he ended up in Adelaide, but I think was country Victoria - and he might have been mature-aged too.

My rules on WA or elsewhere:

Generally, pick the best player you can from wherever.

If two players are equal in our opinion in terms of ability, physical conditioning and character - pick the WA boy every time.

Think before you draft anyone from outside WA - does this person have the character to survive and thrive away from their home environment? Don't forget many of these players are just boys.

Agh yes, Josh is from NSW. I kinda overlooked that one. BTW, if you want to quote someone, at the bottom of their post, next to the edit/delete button is the quote button. Click on it and their entire post quoted will be available for you. Then all you have to do is select the bit you want by deleting.

Because

- Gaspar is getting a ****load of money thrown at him by a club that can barely afford it in return for his mere presence;

and

- Chick came within about an hour of becoming an Eagle until his significant other got offered a nice job in Victoria and he decided to stay with the Hawks. Grrrrrrrrrr...

Thank you, thank you EKA!!!

I have been pushing the home grown barrow for ages. starting to think I was a tad "off" (maybe so). At least it`s of some comfort to know that someone else is even close to having a like opinion.
