Not handling the pressure in my opinion.
His batting is a shadow of it's past, and he's showing his bad demenour on field ala his response to Steve Smith's getting in his way.
Sadly, we are seeing the demise of one of our great players!

Does it mean Smith will stop getting a game?

If only.

I would be surprised if Ponting doesn't finish up ODI's after the WC and hand it over to Clarke, give him 12 months of solid captaincy before taking over the Test gig too.

harsh.

one can see punter calls for it as he shouldve as the senior player and as the junior smith shouldve pulled out.

Punter most likely remembered the outcome of a collison in the below game:

should he have thrown the ball? maybe not.
should smith have pulled out and let the senior player take the catch? definitely.

Might be harsh, but Punter didn't even look at Smith after that. Border would've given him an almighty serve. I reckon he's not handling the pressure well.

I thought it was great, he was basically sending a message to everyone in the team not only Smith that ****ing around against these minnow sides isn't acceptable.

You don't win world cups by simply switching on when you feel like it, you need to be switched on the entire time.

Nonsense. Smith went for the catch. He didn't hear Ponting. No one else called (or he didn't hear them). I've never heard of a situation where two players went for the same ball and then had a discussion as to who the senior player was and who should go for it.

Also, it's quite possible that Smith is a better fielder at this stage of their careers - should Ponting have recognised this and pulled out? It might have been better for the side?

Ponting was in a position to take it much earlier than Smith. No way should he have pulled out.

That said, this really should be his last ODI series. Much as I love and admire the bloke, he's definitely not going to be around for the next tilt and should step aside to allow for a rebuild of the one day team. People like Haddin, Lee and the Hussey's who won't be around next time should also be moved on. Build the side around people like Clarke, Watson and Johnson as the experienced players and give opportunities for people like Pattinson, Ferguson, Paine, Finch, Mckay, Starc et al to prove that they're capable at the level.

well he should have as it's clear punter calls.

if ponting had pulled out of the catch and smith had spilled it the headlines would have reflected this.
Great decision from ponting to call for it, poor from smith to have not heard the call and great to see some emotion.

Way to show respect for an absolute champion of the sport and one of our greatest cricketers of all time. Knob.
Agreed.

And how can people say Smith didn't hear Ponting or know that he was going for it. The footage clearly shows Ponting yell out not once, but twice that he was going for the catch. He was in the area, he's called for it, you give him space and let him take the catch.

But who is to say Smith didnt call for it at the same time? It happens. To show that sort of shit man-management towards a young player trying to find his way in the team is horrible leadership. He is becoming a frustrated old man.

It was great to see some emotion, considering the amount of robots there are these days. I would of been annoyed if Ponting laughed it off. He is the one with the experience, he wants to let everyone else in the team what it takes. Imagine this situation happened in a final and they dropped it, stuff like this can change games. To all you Ponting haters, shut up, he is one of the only ones that can win us this world cup.

i think punter is becoming grumpier and grumpier. a legend of the game, but really needs to get some runs under his belt (he knows more than anyone that he's had a poor world cup to date) which hopefully will start to iron out these behavior incidents from his game. he sets pretty high standards of himself

What if Smith had got there there 1st taken the catch and cracked the shits ?

Im sure he was calling just as loud and thought he had it. If you've played enough cricket you've been there. You need that last second scream if 2 guys are calling it. I didnt see Ponting do that.

Better 2 guys going for it that both pulling out. There's no chance of catching it if both pull out.

Ponting barely had to move for the catch, Smith moved in from his position and looked like a total dick. If he had taken the catch, Ponting would and should have still cracked the shits.

How did this become a SMith bashing thread?? Typical and pathetic.

Pontings poor leadership skills, tantrums, inability to cope under the pressure coupled with his poor form and general bastardry should ensure that this world cup will be the last time he represents Australia, certainly in a captaincy role anyway.
