Get rid of so much unnecessary dead time in a quarter.

* Get rid of the umpire bouncing the ball will eliminate wasted time. See below.

* Boundary umpires to throw the ball in as soon as they get to where ball went out and not worry if rucks are in place. That saves about 10-15 seconds per throw in.

* stop wasting time with score reviews and a) trying to find a shot where the pinkie moves 1.257mm b) constant same shot replays c) score reviews by gutless goal umpires and d) limit score reviews to 30 seconds.

* stop wasting time and holding up play for cramp and minor injuries. If its not a serious injury and player is down 30m from the ball, play on, if within 30m move the player out of the way.

* ball ups, get in there and throw it up, stop wating time clearing the area and asking who is going up.

* goal umpires, its a goal when the ball crosses the line not when you lean back and it goes over your head and then you go looking for the central umpire. About 7-9 seconds per goal is wasted between when the ball crosses the line and the goal umpire signals a goal. Similar time is wasted when a point is kicked.

* centre bounces - currently we have a 45 second break for commercial TV purposes. 30 seconds for the ad and 15 seconds to show the replay of the goal - a necessary evil to have Free TV broadcasted games.

The central umpire gets a message he/she can bounce the ball, then he/she sets themselves, shakes themselves, walks in slowly and then bounces the ball and another 15 to 20 seconds is lost before the clock countdown starts again.

More time is wasted if the bounce is poor and a ball up replaces the bouncedown.

Get rid of the bounce. Get in the umpires ear and do the count down 5,4,3,2,1 as we get to 45 second mark of the commercial break, then the umpire can throw it up, umpires are already in the small circle and up goes the ball within 2 seconds of the 45 second break not 15-20 seconds later.

It is a joke than in a 20 minute quarter, when there are no serious injuries needing stretchers, concussed player carried off with assistance or mobile cart etc, that if both sides only kick 2 goals each, a quarter goes 31 or 32 minutes.

The AFL has just been slothful in so many issues for years and this is the easiest one to fix up

I reckon I've seen games where they show two ads when a goal has been kicked - probably in low scoring games, but it adds to the quarter's length

Shouldn’t be the only AFL club making a change in this particular position…
In breaking news, Port Adelaide have signed Shaun Murphy as fitness administrator.
Chairman David Koch said, this is great signing for the club as Shaun has been very successful working at Essendon and we are pleased he’s decided to join the Port family.

*Denotes Port free kick count win.

Not too many *s. We've been brutalised this year. Even the AFL hates us for finally seeing off Hinkley.

Some of those games we won comfortably, but somehow couldn't football properly in the umps eyes.

I would add to that, pay free kicks when someone is tackled. Stop letting players go round and round in the tackle then call a ball up.

And stop letting players drop the ball on the ground when tackled, then calling a ball up when everyone jumps on it. If you don't kick or handball, free kick.

When I watch old footy matches from the 70s and 80 I'm shocked by how quickly they would give a free if you didn't get rid of the ball when tackled, compared to now.

And then move it on and keep the game flowing.

Get rid of the stupid stand rule too, I bet there's plenty of time wasted while players are forced to adopt statue mode or run 5m back so they can move around.

When we beat Richmond this year by 12 goals and lost the free kick count 20-14 that said it all.

What ever happened to dropping the ball, incorrect disposal rule, the amount of Port tackles I have see this season and the opposition just let the ball fall out.

This is complicated by prior opportunity, which is why I advocate for prior opportunity interpretation to be scrapped. It is too subjective, and incorrect disposal should always be penalised, regardless of whether a player had prior opportunity and made a legitimate attempt to dispose of the ball legally.

The stand rule is totally ridiculous and like you say has made the game harder to watch.
Reminds me of my primary school teacher that kept telling me to stand still in assembly.

Another thing it's led to is that new habit of players that are taking a set shot doing a last second jink to one side so that they can supposedly kick around the bloke on the mark instead of over the top of them - I reckon it upsets their flow/balance and makes them miss more often.

Free kicks inside 50, or free kicks that lead to goals

The eye test says we get reemed like no other

Jeezus christ is there ever a decent game in this hodge podge deadshit competition

The league’s completely lost its marbles.

Nobody gives a f-ck about Carlton and Essendon outside of their permanently depressed supporter bases and Eddie McGuire’s weird nostalgia stiffy for rivalry games from 50 years ago.

Had the league possessed any vision whatsoever, the Showdown would be well-established as a blue riband nationally-televised blockbuster, at the barest minimum on the same tier as the locked-in ANZAC Day and Easter Monday games that have been crammed down our throats for decades.

Instead, the pound-for-pound most reliable fixture of the past 30 years for exciting finishes, big game atmosphere, upsets, biffo, controversy, and Hall Of Famers and stars performing at the peak of their powers, is still shunted over to SkyRacing 2 while we’re treated to Paddy Cripps waddling around collecting 27 touches and 6 clearances for the same old dour-mediocre Blues outfit as if he’s reinventing the wheel.

fmd.

How much time was wasted on that score review including the kick in time by the bulldogs player?

2 minutes? Seriously that bloke shouldn't be a goal umpire if he couldn't adjudicate it was taken before the line.

And also - reduce time of the actual quarters! This will be the biggest help - there is so much dead time at the end of so many games when the result is in the bag. It will also mean fewer injuries and hopefully prolong player careers.
Nah 20 minutes is fine.

25 minutes plus time on was replaced by 20 minutes plus time on with a stricter time on scenarios for the 1994 season.

Also in that season the 3rd umpire, 3rd interchange player and 3rd boundary umpire rotating in pairs were all introduced.

The quarters never seemed too long the first 15 to 20 years of the change from 25 minutes to 20 minutes.

I remember there was a game against North at Docklands in the mid '00's, Denis Cometti was calling the game for 9, the margin was about 10 or 11 points, late in the 4th quarter and North was just were killing the ball with stoppage after stoppage around the ground and there was no time on for that, and Denis said this has to change. And it did a couple of years later.

This probably was the start of quarters dragging on for too long.

Most people aren't aware that an AFLW game is 17.30 per quarter, but until the countdown clock hits 2.30, the countdown clock only stops after a goal is scored or the umpire blows time on for a blood rule or serious injury.

The clock keeps counting down when a point is scored or a boundary throw in or ball up happens. At 2.30 to go mark, the umpires get informed, and then time on is the same as for all of the blokes' games incidents.

That's why the AFLW game broadcast is 2 hours, not 3 hours like the men and you can broadcast 3 back to back games on a Sunday before the clock hits 6pm.

This year so many games that should have a gap between them, so Fox Footy can cross over and do a preview can't happen as the winner of the first game usually is signing the song a minute or two before the bounce down of the 2nd game, or the same thing between the 2nd game and 3rd game for the day.
