What is the ideal number of each type of player in a 22? And what are Freo's players of each type?
All VERY arbitrary, but you will get the idea.

Specialist Small Forward - 1 - Farmer
Fwd pocket / Midfielder - 1 - Bell
Specialist Big forwards - 2 - Tarrant, Pavlich,
Forward Flanker/Attacking outside midfielder - 2 - Headland, Mundy

Specialist outside midfielder(wing) -1 - Peake

Inside midfielder/rover - 3 - Haselby, Schammer, Crowley
Tagger - 2 - J Carr, Dodd

Ruckman - 2 - Sandilands, Warnock

Specialist Small Backman - 1 - Hayden
Back Pocket/ Midfielder - 1 - Mark Johnson
Specialist Big Defender - 2 - Grover, McPharlin
Defensive Flanker/Outside midfielder -2 - Michael Johnson, Drum

Medium Utility (either end)- 1 - Solomon
Big Utility - 1 - Bradley

Thoughts? I wanted another winger but ran out of numbers!

It difficult to place everyone into a category when they could potentially fall into multiple categories, so I will just do the composition bit.

I think 3 rovers plus a backup is overkill (Mind you though I don't consider Crowley as a rover).

I think a centreman (Lenny Hayes, Michael Voss, Joel Corey, Chris Judd, Sam Mitchell) who IMO is more of a slightly bigger type who can barge their way through (Preferably at some speed) clearing traffic via bulldozing is an essential part of any good team.

I like this one. I'd be interested in you picking a Freo 22 in these positions. It's intriguing who gets left out as much as in.

Alright KP :p

I am guessing the key points of complaint are likely to be Palmer in over the more seasoned Foster (Palmer IMO is more dangerous than Foster but as consistent), Johnson as a key defender (He could be interchangeable with Grover as the third tall dependent on opponent) and no Byron Schammer (I wanted more skill in the centre square and at the end of the day I thought it was better to have Heath Black in there in place of Schammer than to have him in the quarterback position where I had him before - if Schammer fixes his skills up over the preseason then I would reconsider).

Does that mean you have Drum and Bradley in your 22 for round one? I reckon those 2 in the side along with Michael Johnson and Mundy leaves us with too many tall utility flanker types.

Gilmore will get game ahead of Drum and Bradley.

That's a tough group to seperate. I reckon all 3 will miss round one, and if all 3 are playing good WAFL footy and we get an injury I'd expect Drum to get selected ahead of Happy and Gumby. Drummy has much more upside than the other two.

I agree with this, Drum has a lot better skills and speed than these two. The area where the other two are going to beat him is on endurance.

Actually, the reason I started this thread was that I suspect we play too many of these flanker type players, and not enough genuine midfielders,
The problem can be solved somewhat by shifting Dodd into the midfield (taking M Carr's spot?), and/or by Michael Johnson holding down a key position. Competition should be on between Drum, Murphy, Kepler, Gilmore, and maybe Head for 1 or 2 spots.

It would be ideal if Johnson could hold down CHB and release Dodd to the middle, but I don't think Johnson has the pace off the mark required to play that role.

I don't think I'd have any of Drum, Murphy, Bradley, Gilmore or Head in my side for round one. Those guys need to stand out during the NAB Cup to get a chance against the pies.

None of them? I'd have thought you might be a tall flanker short in that case! Show us your round 1 team without them, would be interesting.

B- Hayden Grover McPharlin
HB- Black Dodd Michael Johnson
C- Peake Crowley Schammer
HF- Headland Solomon Bell
F- Farmer Pavlich Tarrant
R- Sandilands Hasleby J Carr
Int- Mundy Warnock Palmer Mark Johnson
Em- M Carr McManus Drum/Thornton

I reckon that's pretty close to what will be selected assuming everyone's fit, except Palmer will probably make way for Matt Carr.

nar Palmer out Foster in, M Carr is far from our 22 and i would have Mark Johnson as an emergency and Thorton in the side
