Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Melbourne

Not sure whether to laugh or cry that there are positives afterbgetting flogged by 12 goals.

Positives:
Even though they were comprehensively beaten by Gawn both Jamo and B Will i thought showed glimpses. Should remain our ruck tandem at least until Nic gets back.
West
Clarke looks the goods.
Last 2 games from SPS have been pretty good, seems to be working his way into it.
Kelly I thought was really good. I think he plays better with Shuey not in the midfield, also helped he had someone else in the midfield with speed and guts (West) so he could be a a latervcog in those midfield chains.
TB and Gov.
Effort, tackling , pressure was way up from last for weeks and we won the tackle count.

Negatives
Cripps, must have photos of someone important.
Dixon, utter crab
Nelson, I saw him twice once letting Langdon get a possession, once high fiving Gov.
Disposal still poor, had a few promising chains which broke down due to bad disposal or decision making.
We couldn't keep the pressure off and dropped off.
Didn't win the tackle count by more after getting beaten by 12 goals
C L A R K.Greg Clark.please can posters get his name right.

There was obvious intent to play an faster game plan and it looked positive. The impact was limited because we only had one forward JD who worked very hard up and down the ground to present and apply pressure. His attitude was a positive
West showed pace and desire, he is becoming much more than a roll player.
Clark (no E I read) showed real poise and skill along with his tackling numbers. With westy we are starting to good build a midfield.
Kelly was great and looks to have over come any COVID impact.
Jammo continued to grow into an AFL player against the impressions gained from his WAFL work.
JJ was fast and able to work through traffic as did West and Kelly. Looks a real find.
SPS an Foley are really developing well.

Negatives - well no forward line but we know that. Interesting to look at the set up with out JK. We clearly need Allen and JD plus one more athletic tall with Willie and Ryan working hard and fit.
Hurn and Shep leave big holes in defence - Gov and Barrass were outstanding regardless.
Legacy players without a footy brain and limited skills. They havent been able to get on board with faster play. But we have a couple injured that may help balance that.
Injuries clearly hurting us for 3 years- one year is bad luck. 3 is bad management.

Once you make peace with the fact you are never a chance to win with no ruckmen, forwardline and makeshift midfield, it become quite an enjoyable game to watch in part.

Positives;
  • Genuine effort and energy for most of the game. Its much easier is it to accept losing like this when you know the boys are putting in;
  • We had some overlap run and carry very early and looked to play on quickly
  • Starting to see some of the newer players show something here and there which is good. Likewise its becoming pretty easy to see who needs to be cut at seasons end. Good from a list management perspective;
  • McGovern in AA form, and Barrass holding an otherwise very leaky defence somewhat together;
  • Our rucks competed ok;
  • Our midfield wasn't obliterated, with Kelly and Redden well supported by West and Clark
  • I though Darling had a "nearly" game for mine. Contested well while being double teamed and having the footy bombed in constantly. Clunked a couple of marks late. Pissed me off when he squibbed a contest at HFF
  • We aren't this bad provided we can get our squad fitter. No need to force the issue this year. Use the rest of the year to get our players right and games into the back end of the squad. Hit the front end of the draft for the first time in 10 years.

Negatives
  • We are unfit and unable to play out quarters, or matches.
  • The first two goals were terrible errors to make at half back to break our momentum. Why these dickheads think chipping it around backwards and sideway in defence is a good idea is beyond me.
  • Our defence leaks too many goals and gives us no momentum
  • Key forwards sighted in defence
  • Tackling was very average
  • Felt like our contested marking was off
  • Kelli Underwood gives me the shits
  • Our small forwards were poor
  • Lack of scoring when we had most of the run of play for large periods
  • Dropping our bundles in the first quarter

Rotham is a negative for me. He offers nothing at the moment. His literal role is to mark uncontested and chip sideways. He’s lucky we can’t drop players.
Rotham went from one of our brightest talents to a list plodder. Man I used to be so excited bout him and thought he’d be the next Shep or even Hurn. Partly his own fault but I genuinely worry about our development of young players.

Worst part is that he's close to our best kick of the football but will only do it 15 metres sideways.

But he also has a tendancy to fluff easy kicks like Witherden. All our supposed good kicks are fu**en trash too
Happens when the team is disorganised and low on confidence.

Remember how bad our kicking was in 2008-9. A lot of those players went on to show they had good skills.

Great point. I remember in 2010 they interviewed a specialist kicking coach who had worked with the team around 06/07, he said the players were still good kicks, it was the structure that was off. The next year they shot up the ladder and everyone's kicking looked great again.

I’m quite happy because we now have three of our five “spine” players in place.
Jameson,Edwards and OA . It’s a small positive but it’s how we start the rebuild. Jameson was very impressive in some of his body positioning in marking contests against Gawn and his follow up work was good.Fullback and lead ruck in your first three games? Very impressive!
Edwards looked much freer in his movement and attack on the contest.
Williams definitely needs to play forward.Somebody needs to grab him and explain the concept of second efforts.He’s at a bit of a crossroads for me.
West? What a weapon.The energiser bunny.We’ve rarely had a player who hits the contest that hard.He turned 40-60 contests into 60-40s through sheer grunt.Odd silly turnover but hey?
JD attacked the body as hard as I’ve ever seen him.Constantly outnumbered.I feel sorry for him.
Duggan is really a bad decision maker.As a leader he needs to take more responsibility.Not bomb or turn sideways and chip to the boundar.
Foley really took a big step forward.I’ve canned him before but we’ll done son.Let’s hope the concussion doesn’t set him back.
Rotham is to defence what Waterman is to the forward line.Both of them are not best 22.Both dither.
Witherden is not best 22.Stop the f##king daisy cutters and kick firmly and straight.Run out of fullback when kicking in and think on your feet.Run 20 and kick 55m to a one on one or two on two around the centre or further.Isn’t that better that a bomb to Gawn on the boundary?.

Apparently Duggan had 26 possessions. I lost count how many of his actions ended up in the opposition hands.

His defending looks crap but there again in Simpson’s game plan our bruise free corralling non accountable zoning is bloody hard to watch and I can’t imagine Beau Watters looking tough.

As Chairman Russ says, no chance of change yet so we just back in the same old same old.

Chairman Russ also says go on a long walk and be happy eating just rice.

What’s with all our HBF shitty kicking skills you have Witherden, Rotham and Foley constantly turning the ball over .. That is our main problem at the moment..

That could be a critical game for the spoon. Our favourite hunting ground.

Nekminit - we get four points and finish 17th. You just know it’ll happen that way.

Still 2 is better than 14 hopefully. Although we have no idea what we have in Chesser.

Is it just me or is Clark a lot quicker than I thought he was. Maybe it was the covid symptoms warping my reality but he seemed Petrucelle like when chasing a couple of times.

There was a chase near one of the 50s last night and he definitely didn't look like the slouch he's been made out to be.

Duggan turned it over a bunch too. Really luke-warm on Duggan lately, he's gone backwards on the composure front.

TBF Bunga has been good for a few clanger kicks a game the last couple of seasons too. He used to only do it in grand finals at one point in time.
