1. We beat the premiers.
2. We beat the premiers without Mundy, Morabito or Silver playing. And, FFS, with Mayne, Pearce and Suban as some of our players!
3. Scarlett will get weeks for being a tosser. About f**ing time. Most over rated backman in the AFL, after only Harry "so called legend but actually panic merchant" Taylor. Shitful player is Scarlett, and best part of it all is his stupid act cost Geehandbags the game. Well done Matty!!
4. Zac Clarke might just be close to the hype. Did I mention he is my official buddy?
5. Suban, Duffield and Pearce were very average, yet we still won.
6. Chris Scott still rates Ballas, Fyfe and Sandi.
7. Pav kicked straight. Especially under pressure in the last.
8. We had some basic grasp of Rossco Pekoe's game plan, though some (Suban, Duffman, Hilly in the first quarter) looked uncertain about what to do;
9. Hilly looks so so sooooooooo much better in the midfield and on the ball than when he is played as a backman; oh and
10. while we played Kep too deep in Q1 and Q4 - when he was roaming high on the flanks in Q2 and Q3 we saw why he is a key for us.

Other positives:

MELLINGTON

oh, and

Barlow

oh, and

Zac Clarke

might all be living up to the hype, dontchathink??

To the gorgeous short haircut Freo supporting lass who usually has to put up with my idiotic comments during many hopeless Freo losses at my local ACT footy club's TV sessions -congrats on being lucky enough to be at Subi when Freo finally beat Geelong!!

Well done Miss C, hope you know how rare a win over Geelong is, see you at E later in the seaso!!

To the foul mouthed skinny hipped young Geehandbag supporter who turned up with her (3 female) mates to watch the game on pay TV after the Brumbies loss - kiss my fat flabby white a$$ - sucked in, the result was the perfect end to a night of club TV footy after the Brumbies (garbage side) lost. Oh, and I hope your Dad hated the loss as much as you did - you certainly shared his Iphone comments with us whether we wantd to hear or not!!!! And it was Bartel that missed and Scarlett that "swished at" Ballas!!

BEST POSITIVE OF ALL -

FOOTY IS BACK!!!

Best positive for me was they stuck to the game plan apart for a bit of the first quarter. So many times Geelong looked on but blokes got into position in time and forced a turnover or dead ball. If thats how we will play all year we wont be losing alot of games.

No injuries. No reports so far. Beat them in contested possies and we are still missing Mundy, Barlow was sub, and the forgotten man Lower.

Ballantyne got reported.

Oh, and our much derided Ross Lyon game just produced the best game of the round and maybe of the season.

Hardly the best game of the round - the Essendon game was awesome, and the Hawkers -Pies game also had a pulsating atmosphere.

TBH, I also think the Tiges-Carltank atmosphere at the MCG was a whole heap better than tonight's Subi feel...

Almost every neutral observer that I've heard/read has suggested ours was the game of the round so far.

So,you weren't at the game then?

Middle-tier playing their best collective game ever, seriously I've been a massive critic of some of these guys before but I don't think Ibbotson, Johnson, Duffield and Mzungu have ever played this well in the same game before.

Johnson in particular was MASSIVE and I don't like him one bit.

LOL what. The freo game had a lot the other games haven't, on field drama with Ballantyne pretty much inviting Geelong to swing at him and some actually doing it. And it was also tough and went down to the wire. Best game of the round so far, even if you're a neutral. Yet you're a Freo fan, get a grip.

Clearly not, could not have been more shocked to see the crowd figure was only 34k, sounded at loud as any Subi crowd I've been to. I still have goosebumps from Barlow's goal and Pav's winner. Just electric all night :thumbsu:

Lot's of skirmishes too which the crowd got right behind.

One thing that surprised me is after the game I didn't feel like Freo had played "That well". Geelong didn't either really, but it's good to know there is much improvement to be had to our side, in years past we would have just capitulated but whatever Ross has added gave us the edge I feel.

So many times Geelong players were unmanned (due to lazy defense or too rigid gameplan sticking) and roaming in packs able to pick up a sloppy ball. Their forward line was rubbish though. I saw many times a Freo player not covering the zone effectively and not telling the right person to fill a hole, which often resulted in Geelong getting easy kicks into their forward line that Freo rarely had. Our midfield was also sloppy with clearances I thought. Rusty skills outside the first 10 minutes with the 5 unanswered goals when we actually looked like the Hawks with the ability to hit targets.

What a game to start the season.

We got of to a flyer, geelong hit back hard an when they eventually took the lead an had momentum we were able to hit back.
Freo of old would of lost the lead then allowed them to get a run on an get 3 or more in front.

Dont think geelong ever got more than a goal in front all night?

Everytime they came at us an took the lead we hit back.

great atmosphere
great game
an still plenty we can improve on.

Morabito played WAFL!

Almost every neutral observer that I've heard/read has suggested ours was the game of the round so far.

So,you weren't at the game then?

Nope, I was in a truly neutral (ie non_AFL) venue and the atmosphere, suspense and "vibe" of the Essendon game frankly shat all over the Freo Geelong game vibe. The only people who were interested in the Freo game were those of us who had either Freo or handbagger memberships/allegiances. The essendon game drew in the leaguies, union and soccer followers. To be frank, if I hadn't done my loser dance to flaunt it in the face of the Geelong fans I doubt many would have even known Freo were playing tonight. By way of comparison, the same venue had over 1900 fans screaming for nearly 3 quarters of the Hawkers/Pies game.

To be blunt, just because it was a great loud game at Subi doesn't mean it was a great game nationwide. Much as I wish we could be the vibe of the nation, we just aren't. Yet.

Kicking straight.

Yep - without a doubt, we were really accurate today - which helped us get the result, though Fyfe and Pav's miracle goals stretched the boundary of expected accuracy!!

I have a grip, free throw man.

If you actually had a memory of any AFL kind, you would recognise that some of the best atmosphere is created at games which are not necessarily the closest games. So, this round, the Tiger/Carltank or Pies Hawkers games...

But, of course, when your sole function in posting is to shed shrapnel and throw shit at Freo, mere logic fails to register with you. Not a surprise, just remarkable how you suddenly pop up on this board after months of absence - funny how your re-appearance co-incides with certain "veteran posters" being put under pressure...

And, if you bother to lift your focus outside Perth, you might just recognise that the atmosphere at one or two non-Subi games is worth paying attention to as a focal point of fan participation and excitement...

Spoken like a true non Freo fan.

It couldn't at all be the case that their poor forward production and efficiency was due to our defensive and midfield pressure??

And despite our players supposedly (according to the great god that is Memories) "not telling the right person to fill a hole" and pointing everywhere ala' MJ - guess what - we had the best defensive intercept and turnover ratio of the last 4 years!!

But of course the opinion of the great so called Hemorrhoids far outweighs such logic as stats and analysis...

I think you were pretty harsh on Duffield BPG. He did some good things, many actually, and put his head over the ball on a number of occasions. In fact a big positive was the commitment the entire team showed to hitting the contest, and that we actually looked like a team, we played with cohesion from one end to the other. Everybody seemed to know what they were meant to be doing. Very strange to see in a Fremantle team.

I guess that leads to another positive, seeing Ross Lyons game plan is nothing like what he had at Sydney and St Kilda; he looks to have changed his game plan to suit the Freo team, which to me, was a big question mark about him. Was he a one trick pony or was he going to develop a plan to suit our team. Big tick for Rosco!

Another big positive for me was seeing Johnson play with some real commitment and endeavour. In fact he was so busy playing committed football he forgot to keep pointing all over the place! Some of his work was sublime.

Can't have a positives thread without mentioning Fyfe. And seeing the 'gu' play so well was great.

Well done fellas, superb way to start the year. The Cats-Freo games at Subiaco in the last few years have been brilliant. ****ed my tips up, but hey.. :D

Loved the pace and aggression of the game, really ramped up from the pre-season and it finally feels like footy is back.

While Ibbotson didn't set the world on fire, I was glad not to see any of the brain fades or lack of awareness issues. He could be an important player if he keeps that up and improves his execution a little.

Also very pleased with Barlow's cameo, good signs for one of our most important players.

Hope the Doggies smash you you bloody prick! :thumbsd:

Seriously though, nice sentiment Quinz and I'm also stoked to have footy back, there's just nothing else like it. There were a couple of skeptical Americans in front of me tonight who weren't into it at first but were screaming like mad men by the end, I was so stoked I didn't even mind them referring to Johnson as our "black quarterback". I imagine black QB's in the NFL must be rare.
