The club has stated (at least CC has) that they will mostly go after midfielder in the draft, so here is a list off the top midfielders who might be a available at pick 31: (Bios by Footygoss.com)

Following are a chance of being available at 31:

Jarrad Harbrow – Murray Bushrangers
(based on recent history could be a chance based on our love of Vic Country kids)
Can play as an inside or outside midfielder. Greatest assets are pace, kicking and goal sense. Didn’t have an extremely impressive championships campaign or draft camp but goalkicking midfielders can be invaluable. Should be selected somewhere after pick 25.

Chris Schmidt – West Adelaide
Classy midfielder that showed his potential at the 2005 U16 championships where he was SA’s third best player behind Gibbs and Sellar. Suited to roles in the midfield, wing or forward flanks. Very smart footballer with excellent disposal. With Sellar out of form, Schmidt was clearly SA’s second best at the U18 championships. Top 10 in handspan testing at draft camp. Good overhead for a midfielder and has a strong mark. Most likely a second-round selection.

Tom Hurley – Sturt
SA U18 captain and U18 AA. Consistent ball winner with excellent pace and evasive skills. Draft stocks boosted by dominant championships performance this year. Suited to a role as inside midfielder with ability to win possession from stoppages. Kicking lacks penetration and precision at time but is a genuine ball magnet. Could be a first-round selection, more likely a second-rounder.

Sam Jacobs – Woodville-West Torrens (might be available for our 2nd pick)
Only Woodville-West Torrens representative for SA at the U18 championships this year. Genuine ruckman who is mobile and works well with midfielders. Strong mark and good size. Played league football for the Eagles in the SANFL this season. Excellent work around the ground. Worth a mid-to-late round pick.

Zac Millar – North Adelaide (might be available for our 2nd or 3rd pick)
Former AIS/AFL academy member with skill and talent. Suited to a role either as a half forward flanker of midfielder. Deadly goal sense and excellent disposal. Well built and hard at the ball. Questions over his lack of endurance ability to do the one-percenters. Most likely a late-round pick.

Shane Edwards – North Adelaide (Later picks)
Terrific athletic qualities for a skinny midfielder. Hard working on-baller and despite skinny frame is a very good tackler (11 tackles in SANFL preliminary final). Third in the beep test at the draft camp. Outstanding endurance and aggression, but small size could see him drop to a late-round pick.

Craig Bird - New South Wales/ACT
The captain and MVP for NSW/ACT at the U18 national championships, also their only All-Australian representative. Hard-working inside midfielder with 27 disposals in the Rising Stars Cup match. Could go anywhere in the draft and would be a handy asset with great work in the stoppages.

Following only an outside chance:

Brock O'Brien - Peel Thunder (Probably won't fall to 31)
Physical midfielder/half back flanker in the same mould Brock McLean. Thrives on physical contests and impressed at last two national championships at U18 level. Also played a handful of games in Peel's league side. Not lightning quick but has solid pace and appears physically ready to make the next step. A definite top 20 hope.

Daniel Connors – Bendigo
Quick inside midfielder, courageous and outstanding disposal. Has the ability to get the hard ball at stoppages as well as receive possession on the outside while using his pace to break the lines. Could also develop into a floating half back flanker, but has more upside as an inside midfielder. Strong overhead and a strong-bodied player. Tackling is only question mark but will most likely go between pick 10 and 20.

Bachar Houli – Western Jets
Tremendous, damaging skills for a small midfielder. Despite small size, Houli is hard at the ball and is superb in contested situations. Very smart player with outstanding vision and awareness. Missed out on U18 AA selection despite impressing at the championships. Struggled with ankle and back injuries in 2005 but had an injury-free 2006 season. Could be selected anywhere between pick 10 and 25.

Tom Hislop - Tasmania
U18 All-Australian, physically tough inside midfielder. Good natural footballer, excellent skills with both hand and foot and impressive size for a midfielder. Most likely a top 20 pick.

Ricky Petterd - Queensland (We don't usually go for Banana benders)
Highly-rated midfielder after claiming the Harrison Medal for best player in division two at the national championships. Another Queensland representative in the U18 All-Australian side. Relatively quiet in the AFLQ but has smooth skills and leadership qualities. Chance to go in the first round but more likely to slip to the second round.

You can run a line through basically all the bottom catagory and also Edwards. Schmidt is 20% of making it to 31.

Someone like Rhys Prismall might be up your alley.

BTW, do you have a link from footygoss? Cant see it on the site?

I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a tall with our first pick, maybe Jaryd Allen if he's available, or Jaryd Morton or Colin Garland.

There's also Clint Benjamin, Tim Houlihan, Gavin Urquhart, and Shaun Grigg as big bodied midfielders that could be available at 31.

I hadn't heard/read CC's comments that we plan to recruit midfielders, that is very good news.

it was quite a while back

he was talking about the fact we have so many 'little guys' at centre clearances and recruiting big midfielders would be a priority

of the ones left at 31 i would be looking at schmidt, urquart and grigg

even though he is small i wouldnt mind if we got gary moss. he just looks a natural

CC also said that he wouldnt trade Polak or Medhurst or Croad (back in the day).

I thought he is on record as saying everyone is tradable.

Spot on. He also clearly did not want to trade Polak, but when Polak said he would go in the PSD he (well the rescruiting staff) did the best they could and cut our losses. I can't recall him saying he would not trade Medhurst, could we have a post to that statement please?

I do believe CC said no one is above being traded and they would look at any offer.someone from the tigers said they had to talk polak into going because he wasnt too keen(terry i think) and his manager must of said that to the press to make sure they got a deal.

I should stop posting the same old stuff over and again but...

1st Round picks:
Nathan Krakouer (DC: No#1 over 30m, 3rd 100m, goal kicker and good skills 181cm) - Not a big body like CC was saying we were going for, but a Peake like winger/HFF with better skills and a bit more height - could be a very useful player. Alternatively could be used as a goalsneak and be groomed as a long term replacement for Farmer, now that Medhurst is gone.

Travis Boak (AIS student, DC: Top 10 over 30m, good skills, 181cm) - An inside midfielder with pace and skill. Had a very poor carnival, but has been injured. Likened to Dal Santo. From Country Vic, so go home factor not a big player (Not that recruiters should worry too much about such things). Could go high in the draft, but injuries and poor form are likely to see him fall.

Jarryd Morton (192cm, good skills and goal kicker (39 goals in WAFL Colts), decent pace). - Its the combination of Height and skill with a bit of pace that is attractive, however no one feature really stands out. Played a range of roles across this year including CHF, HFF, Wing, HBF, CHB but mainly across the forward line / Wing. Not an inside midfielder, possibly more a Brett Burton / Andrew Embley type.

James Hawksley - (AIS Student, can't remember size but think 189cm, pacy and skillful) - Similar attributes to Morton but probably has more "upside" and more footy smarts than Morton. Similar sort of problem to Mundy/Drum in that he CHB material at U18 level but more a HBF/Winger at AFL level. Again an outside player. Apparently (Chopper at Dockerland) Freo didn't talk to him at the draft camp.

Gary Moss - (U18 AA, U16/18 WA Captain, pacy, good skills and goal kicker, several games at WAFL Senior level) - An inside midfielder that has everything except that he is 177cm or thereabouts - about 6cm short of being a Top 10 selection. There is the possibility he could grow (not sure if he is bottom aged or not) to around 180cm in which case he could be a very valuable commodity. IMO very similar sort of player to Marc Murphy last year, very much a footballer first, athlete second and I wouldn't be suprised if he goes before our first pick. A definite AFL player.

and of course Tim Houlihan and Caleb Mourish...very hard to know what we will pick at with this late pick without knowing what the recruiter is specifically after. I we assume that we are after "tall midfielders" than that could rule out Moss and maybe even Krakouer/Boak. However on the other hand, these players might be seen as being too good to pass on, in which case that might influence the strategy.

What chance the Dirty Birds will nab Jarryd Morton with one of their picks before us (I think they have two), seeing they didn't get him as F/S? Not that I necessarily think he will be the best fit for us (not that I would know), but they were pretty keen on getting all the Morton boys weren't they?

There'll be 7 new faces at our club come draft time - there are always gems late in the draft. Always, and Freo are as good as anyone else at unearthing them and turning them into decent AFL players.

Hislop, Schmidt, Petterd, Houlihan, Urquart, Grigg and Prismall are likely to be available at #31 and the type of player you would be after I imagine.

O'Brien, Connors and Houli would all be virtually no chance of reaching #31 IMO.

gee if hislop was available i wouldnt know what to do with myself lol

having said that it wouldnt surprise me if we over looked him

As an ex-pat Fremantle boy, Bulldog's supporter (both WAFL and VFL/AFL) who has a little bit to do with the Jets, I am very happy to hear that Houli and Prismall are on the radar.

In my opinion they will both be there at 31 - with Prismall (still 'bottom aged') a chance of being there a round later - does anyone know if these players are being considered?
