Fox Footy and Fox Sports NBL commentator Dwayne Russell reported on Sportsday radio on Monday night that two Melbourne-based AFL clubs were the front-runners to enter teams into the soon-to-be-expanded NBL.

Russell said Collingwood, which already has both a netball team and AFLW side, had shown interest in owning a basketball team as the NBL seeks a second Melbourne-based franchise to enter the competition.

Fremantle also looms as a viable option to be a second WA-based NBL team off the back of the Perth Wildcats’ success, which has seen them attract over 15,000 fans to most home games so far this season.

“The NBL is reportedly speaking to half a dozen interested AFL clubs. Not all of them are in Melbourne, one of them is in Western Australia I’m told,” Russell told Sportsday.

This is very early stages and apparently Melbourne Storm is also a possible franchise owner. It would seem though that this is a trend in football that goes beyond just Collingwood possibly as a result of the footy department spend cap.

I hope we avoid this one like the plague. Even the most iconic nbl teams have struggled or collapsed in recent years and it also lacks the female diversity angle. I can't see basketball bringing us a new market.

Perth Wildcats fan since I was 7. Don’t know why I started supporting them but I did and I can’t switch now, not even for Collingwood.

I was a Melbourne Tigers Fan but I can't be a Fan of Melbourne United

Got to spend the money somewhere and it may well enable additional spending on footy outside the FD tax. Are there caps on the administrative spend in these other sports? Could we have half a dozen basketball recruiting staff who watch an occasional game of junior or minor league footy? Could we employ additional fitness, conditioning or medical expertise?

Sounds like another shit Eddie idea to me.

Trying to Distract Fans from how Bad the AFL Teams is Going and from he Best Make Buck's Coaching

Spreading themselves a bit thinner it looks like. As per above posts, focus on the footy!!

How about we focus on winning getting to 17 first and become the beast of the afl again before we stick our fingers in any more Pies.

The club does realise that most supporters won’t want to follow anything but the football team, right?

We need to stop trying to mimic European sports clubs. We don’t have 700 million on our continent.

What money? Our profits are small based on annual turnover and continuing to inject revenue into minnow sports ($ wise) is not a sustainable business model because it simply puts a drain on football resources to supplement losses.

That said whenever we have these strategic leaks I seem to take the POV that ends up being inaccurate so in this case I think I’ll support this one!

Is that because the Women's AFL Team and Netball Team have gone so badly.....no, wait, hang on

On what metric are you basing this comment? They were established in the 2017 FY and we don’t yet have the annual report to weigh up their contribution so let’s wait and see before this sort of smart arse commentary.
