You've missed my point.

Rather than having yet another key defender, you can afford to pick up a forward at 8 and a ruckman, or whatever else the club was intending, at 23, or a forward at 23.

You have to give something away to get something in return, and losing a key backman would not hurt Richmond, but what you get in return could very well help you.
Our selection at Pick 8 won't be affected by the addition of another 2nd rounder. Will a second rounder have more value to us now, or when GC enters the competition?

You're kidding right? For the 1st time in 25 years we're sort of getting some sort of resemblence for a backline and now you're asking us to trade them? As we saw in the grand final, a stong backline and midfield is the key to success.

Fully agree with this.

The Tiger backline has evolved substantially; why would we want to upset the mix now that it's starting to come together.

Our defence is now starting to take real shape, combining it with our exciting running game and midfield strength will produce a side that will be set up for some serious September action.

A truly exciting time to be following the Tigers.

Well doen to TW and his team for placing emphasis on run, while remembering the importance of a strong defensive unit :thumbsu:

Yes, but you can't play all of them, so you can cash in and fill a hole in your list.

A key forward at 8 or 23 looks a lot nicer than having McGuane in the reserves.
We currently play Thursty, Moore, McGuane and Schulz. Rance would be most likely to replace Schulz ratehr than the other three.

How many of you seriously see McGuane being a part of your next great team?

How many of you are merely fattening him up for GC17 (from what I can gather in this thread)?

A Tom Swift or Tom Rockliff, or anyone else for that matter, who has found his feet at the club, and is starting to play good football, is better than a new draft pick in 2010 or 2011, given the way your team is developing (playing us in the 2011 GF IMHO;)).

I for one see McGuane as a huge part of out next great team. He and Thrusty and Moore work so well together, and even Sarge when he's down there. We'd be foolish to break that chemistry up. If Rance comes on and really has to slot in, then I agree McGuane may be vulnerable.

Schultz

Based on the last half of the season I rate McGuane extreamly highly. At the start of last season he was well behind Thurstfield now I rate him on an even scale as him. He also gives some rebound out of defence which will be important if we play 4 talls down then.

Schulz is a player akin to Polak in that he doesn't have a position and seemed to settle playing on the half back flank late in the season. He isn't mobile enough to play on smaller players like Moore and Thurstfield and Rance will have oven taken him in the pecking order by the end of next year. If defenders cop injuries we still have Bowden who can play tall if required + the raw & young Goo who did the apprentiship down back this year

Schultz + Richmonds 3rd round (42?) pick for Kyle Riemrs or Sam Lonergan and you have a deal?

Thurstfield, Moore, McGuane and Rance could make up one of the best Richmond defences we've seen since the mid 90's. Moore and Rance get alot of the ball and offer good rebound. While Moore and Thurstfield have shown that they can play on smaller opponents or taller ones (Smalls they have beaten= Robbo, Fisher, O'Keefe, talls they have beaten = Buddy, Riewoldt, Fev) and while McGuane is a super competitor whos improvement in the second half of the season was eclipsed by only Tuck's

Hang on. You write two paragraphs about how Schultz isn't that great, and how he's expendable, and then offer a 3rd rounder with him for two of our best young players? That's ridiculous. We should throw in our first rounder as well.

Perhaps, based entirely on your write up, and not on my personal opinion of Schultz, pick 39 or 55 for Schultz.

A **** does not equal gold. A **** and a 3rd rounder does not equal gold.

EDIT: My own opinion would be probably 39 for Schultz, with perhaps a swap of 2nd rounders, or something minor like that.

The key to your argument seems to be an assumption that Rance can step straight into the squad. If thats the case someone like Pears could do it at Essendon. You have Ryder/Pears why the need for someone like Mguane then?

The fact is Mguane has a place now and we have no way of knowing if Rance will come on. What if 2 years ago we had delisted someone like Kel Moore cause JON was going to come in and tear it to parts.

Because after that theres nothing. Myers will never be a KP and there would have to be question marks over Pear's size (not that I don't rate him, but he could develop into a Mundy type)

I would say that with a year of training at Richmond under his belt, Wallace and co. would have a pretty good idea of where Rance sits.

Even if Rance falls flat, and you trade McGuane, you've got Thursfield and Moore who are already looking the goods. If Pears falls flat, we've got Ryder and then no-one.

You're a persistant little bugger!

Nothing really on your list of interest apart from Bellchambers possibly, dunno how he's developing, enlighten us!

Can't say I'd disagree with you there.

Bellchambers is coming along very nicely, played 3 or 4 games last year, despite being too small and not ready, but did all right, and will be right in a couple of years' time.

Unfortunately, we have three ruckmen, one of whom is Laycock, and another of whom has played one season (Bellchambers). We're about as desperate as you are.

Some of you tiger fans need to lighten up, he asked a simple question in a much better way then the hundreds of other trade threads.

The two more defending players that I would offer myself would be Mcguane or King. I could very much see a tough in and under player like King could perhaps put some desperation into the bombers backline perhaps?

Edit: Schulz is also a possibility but I do value him, as I think the tigers coaching staff do also, he would be a second round pick easy I would suggest.

I don't think that a small defender is what we desperately need. Between Slattery, Hocking, Hislop, even McVeigh and NLM, we have enough who can play small. So King isn't what we need.

But McGuane would fit in, and a 2nd rounder + a sweetener if need be would be on offer.

Nah, Not King, I've posted a Campbell Brown poster to him and a letter asking him to become our version of him.

I see him as vital to the next step being taken by the entire playing list, a little more polish in his disposal, more poise in his decision making and he'll be a fair dinkum star.

We can definitely play Moore, Thursty, McGuane, Schulz and Rance in the one side. I look forward to seeing it. They're all extremely mobile and able to play tall or small (except maybe Schulz, and I think he is far more valuable than he is given credit for. He might not be able to play on a little bloke but he does run well out of defence and is great in the air.).
If Rance can come in and hold down a key defensive post it frees up Moore to be a more attacking defender. As I said, we can have them all in the side, and will be better for it. Opponents and commentators will remark on how big and strong our backline is, across the board.
