On the channel 7 news tonight they said that Hay has stated he doesn't want to leave Hawthorn, and Hawthorn do not want to get rid of him.

Apparently Chick spoke to Hay trying to entice him over.

I always thought it was a media beat up, or just his management making a statement about how willing other clubs would be to pay his contract. I guess we just have to put our faith in the tall players we have...

I always thought that Hawthorn would offload one of their key forwards before even considering Hay.

Having said that, now is the best time to swoop on Hay and the club should move heaven and earth to try and secure his services.

If Rawlings is on the table, I would certainly take him. He can play both forward and back which is an advantage. Hay is no forward, but those are all just words, let's just wait and see what happens.

From the grapevine I've been in touch with, Hay's first preference is to stay at the Hawks, but on his terms. If Hawthorn can't give him what he wants, then he may look west, for slightly less than what he's asking for at the Hawks (due to cost of living in Melbourne compared with Perth and his family ties).

Another player's name I've heard bandied around is Josh Carr. Is he out of contract? Would give our midfield toughness. I know we're screaming out for a KPP down back but surely it's better to get the best player available.

We need to move away from this mindset that says if they come from Western Australia it means they want to return to Western Australia. The Victorians have been doing it for years and it isn't always the case. All year it was "Judd wants to go home" or "Wirra wants to go home" and now here we have "Hay wants to come home" or "Armstrong wants to come home" Next year it will probably be "Wells wants to come home". Get over it!!

It is no longer a case of state versus state. Its a national comp and if someone has the skill to be worth $350 000 and an interstate team is willing to pay that then they would more often than not take it.

Josh Carr signed with Port last year...sorry to burst you bubble. Though I wish Carr was out of contract.

When Farmer (that piece of overrated crap) was at Melbourne, he spun a yarn about playing all his games and his career at one club and how he loved Melbourne.

The bottom line is not what they say, but what they are getting paid.

true to an extent, but asides Richard Taylor *cough* we have not had much success *cough* recruiting Victorians.

I'm all for Rawlings ( I know he is Tasmanian), but it's not being biased / naive 95% of the time, it's just the way it is. And to recruit a non-WA, they would more than likely demand a premium wage.

Also, Rawlings had this big thing about moving forward because he did not enjoy playing as a defender, so he might not answer the FP defender question.

for me, just get me a big backman who can play.

In today's West it says...

Hawthorn's chances of retaining uncontracted players Jade Rawlings and Angelo Lekkas have been significantly improved by the willingness of senior teammates to take pay cuts.

Sources last night confirmed that all the senior Hawthorn players earmarked for pay cuts had agreed, in principle, to some form of salary sacrifice, though the precise amounts and details were still being negotiated.

The Hawks had sought to slash $600,000 from their player payments in order to retain Rawlings and Lekkas while remaining under next year's salary cap.

I guess this includes Jon Hay.

hmmmmmmmm very interesting - this makes the trade peeriod a little more interesting.

I actually do hope we get Hay, but ultiamtely that depends on how much we have to pay him, and how much we have to give up to get him.

Looking more and more likely that if anyone goes it will be Rawlings, and Geelong are in the front seat for his services ATM.
