I love how we're getting written off already. Suddenly Geelong, the team who we comfortably put away 2 weeks ago, is considered a vastly superior contender 🤣

yeah, short-sighted media b0llocks ...
of the struggling "big" teams, the dogs will come good, too good not to ... port and the giants will improve but there's signs, and not just from the four weeks of this season, that both clubs have problems (a lot of them linked to the coaches)
it's quite laughable to think we're being "written off", mainly because even while we might not be firing on all cylinders right now: a) we will improve, we ARE improving, and b) how many other teams, apart from melbourne, look particularly great?
carlton aren't there yet, despite the noise (and i still have faith in dew and gold coast making the grade); collingwood? no; fremantle ... still too brittle away from home but, like gold coast, they're better this year ... and essendon are building but slowly
despite the result the other night i have no doubt brisbane will finish ahead of geelong, and i'm still of the strong belief geelong are done as a contender
richmond on their day can beat anyone, but so many question marks (martin, hunger factor, lynch inconsistency, injuries to ageing players)
the team i do think can make a stand this year, if they can get out of their own way, are st kilda
based on how i read the season now (four weeks in, i know!), and on my own opinions, i can see a top four of melbourne, brisbane, sydney, st kilda, with the bulldogs most likely the team that disturbs that
but, again ... it's four weeks in

SEN on Tues morning were discussing whether each State should name a team, even if they never play. Personally I think it is a great idea. In the discussion Lyon and Watson both highlighted what it would mean to current young players who did not grow up with State of Origin footy.

The young player they focussed on was Justin McInerney. They are both massive fans.
It's just like the All Australian team that never actually plays a game. I like it.

Imagine an actual ALL STAR game, a la NFL. Play it mid-season, in the bye window. 3 players from each team chosen by a panel. 9 on each interchange. 30 interchanges per quarter.
Panel chooses the teams.
One could play in white with a red V, the other in red, with a white V.
Proceeds to charity.

great idea ... a one-off each year ... surely would become a game players feel honoured to be part of, as it should be
not sure about the three from each team, i'd prefer maybe a cap on the number from any one team

I'm happy for a State of Origin to be in Name Only much like the AA.

I'd imagine QLD & NSW would be under 1 banner, with the other states getting individual teams.

Sadly I am old enough to remember the Interstate Carnivals and then State of Origin. I miss it.

I really do like the idea of a virtual SOO, where deserving players are honoured.

The All Star Game idea is a cracker.

Same

So the ALL STAR concept got a bit of interest, enough to debate a few ideas.
It would have a lot of favourite players, done right it wouldn't place too much stress on their bodies, you could have it partly picked by a panel and part popularly, but I think that makes positional choices too hard. Stick with the AA approach.
It could rotate from State to State, in the big grounds, Optus, AO, MCG (or Marvel?), Blundstone? SCG, Gabba.
Worth a thought?

not this!!!
an expert panel (NOT friggin commentators!) maybe based on clubs nominating deserving players?

Is anyone aware of any stock shortages at the online Swanshop. Struggle to even find a decent men's polo shirt on there.
This year's offering have been particularly disappointing across the board. Did they spend all the cash on Buddy 1000 gear?

Was looking for a lightweight Jacket. Girl at the shop said they are waiting for the order to arrive. Seemed to think late this month, early next month.

This is RW's special thread . But who pays for it , you just don't paint them .

I think the poster formerly known as swansrule100 requested it actually, what happened to him?

Our 22 on Friday had just two players who had played for another mob - Ladhams (a trade) and Paddy Whack (PSD having been delisted ages before by the Saints).

It must be a long time since any team had so few imports in a match.

We also had only 5 veterans in Parker, Rampe, Cunningham and Lloyd. Also unusual.

Also Reid - how could I forget? (hehehe) Thanks Jewelsbon for the heads up.

Would be interesting outside of a club's first year

Watching all our games, I've noticed very clearly that we are nowhere near as good in wet conditions. As soon as we can use our game plan in the dry we are incredible. But not one footy show can grasp it. I couldn't believe no one mentioned the fact North were close because it was slippery. The dogs and Brisbane showed what we would have done in the dry. So come September we should be sweet as long as we get through winter

That could be awkward seeing we're playing a winter sport.

Is he #18? I've never looked that close because I am always looking at what comes off his boot.:)
Ugh. I meant #5, don't know what the frack happened to my brain. The two that stand out are

  • John Rantall
  • Ryan O'Keefe
At this point O'Keefe is ahead because he's won a premiership and from his consistency.

Rantall is before my time but at the same stage in their careers Heeney is ahead of O'Keeffe in my eyes. He didn't hit his straps until he moved from HFF to the mids.
On a different matter Heeney, like Buddy, is worth bums on seats. Ryan not so much.
