As the practice matches and NAB Cup games approach just wondering how much emphasis do you place on the results from these games when talking up your teams chances for the season. You see a successful side like Sydney experimenting and giving everyone a go, resting the stars for the most part, while most of the bottom 8 will field their best 22 or as close to it as possible from the start trying to find the right mix. IF you get a few young kids (1st/2nd year players) starring in these games do you think you have got the next superstar of the comp or do you take a cautious approach and say its only the Pre Season games lets see how he goes in the real games.

Last years practice matches were deceiving.

Essendon won all 3 Nab Challenge Cup Matches, after losing their NAB Cup opener.

Carlton beat West Coast in Alice Springs after getting done by Port by 100 points the week before

I don't believe practice match results are a great indicator.

None. If Carlton can win the pre-season competition in the darkest period of their club, I don't bother taking notice. H&A season is when it matters for me and I'm fully aware why some sides don't play key players before Round 1, just to be on the safe side.

Richmond beat us by 80 odd points last year in a practice match. We come out in round 1 and win by 115

Relevence is small, although being starved of footy for so many months I think most fans are needing their football fix so badly they'll take any small victory or reason for hope there is. Practice match form is all we have for a while yet.

I love practice games. If you win you're happy and if you lose you don't care. IMMO anyone who takes Praccy match form into account is an idiot. It's like net batting in cricket, a small indiction but in reality nothing much

Practice matches are there to evaluate youngsters and work out some of the "off season rust". The pre-season is just a more in depth version of practice matches. You have to test your youngsters somehow and this is a good way of doing it.

Pre-season form means nothing. We were good in pre-season last year, we even played pretty well in the NAB cup against brisbane where we were very unlucky not to win it.

Then we won all the challenge matches and beat sydney twice.

Means nothing.

Last year Richmond thrashed us by 90 odd points in a practise match then when the real stuff happened they couldnt match us and were slaughtered by 115 points. hahaha

Ouch. :thumbsd:
So true.

Must also be remembered the Cats won the Pre season comp and missed the 8.

Has no relevance as the coaches are trying so many new tactics and players that little can be told from the results.

I can't matter that much.
I mean as if anybody trys as hard in practise matches than they do in the home and away season.
That is why I said H&A is when it matters.

I went to that game in Shepparton, it was good, except for the part where we got flogged...but the Round 1 game more than made up for it!

I don't take any notice of Pre-Season games, Geelong won it last year and didn't make the 8, Carlton won it the year before and won the wooden spoon, and the year before I think Port won it, and won the flag. You can't possibly predict the H&A season based on the pre-season.

They mean nothing, but it's exciting to watch some of the kids play, and a relief when your key players get through without injury.
