Any ideas on out of contract players we can pick up cheaply in the preseason draft?

Personally think we need another ruckman and another tall defender?
We have been getting massacred without Barnarby (look at the hitout stats in the recent massacres) and I can't see DeLuca developing into a number one ruckman before Barnarby retires.
Also, I don't want to be playing Whitnall/Digby/Prenderghast on tall forwards (e.g. Ottens) next year or have Teague playing on likes of Stafford because either Livingston or Thornton are down.

I think we need these positions filled immediately by strong bodies. Problem is if we recruit through the normal draft it will be a few years before the 18 year olds have the strength to play ruck or key defensive positions. So I figured the Pre-season draft might be the place to look.

Any ideas?
Brogan, Jason Cloke, Nick Holland are the ones mentioned in the papers and on this board. Any other other ideas on out of contract/disgruntled players?

Or should we just be going for a tough midfielder to replace Kouta and/or Campo? Are any likely to be available through PSD?

our backline is in disarray and as much as i hate to say this, i think we should try and get jason cloke as our 3rd best tall defender. he was pretty good wen he first started and i think he has a lot of unfulfilled potential. however if he doesnt show anything in the first year he should go.

His a big body, we need that.

He couldn't be any worse then some of the players we have... I think we should try and get him.

I tend to agree.
He's been getting BOG quite regularly in the VFL playing as a pure CHB position rather than the floating defender he played in the past (I read this in the Hun, so take it on face value). I think he would be better than Bannister/Prendergast/Digby to play on floating ruckman and 3rd talls and would mean we would be playing the likes of Whitnall and Digby (if he's around) out of position constantly. As mentioned, he can fill a role until some young players come through...he might even stick around after that.

Are there any other players who could fill the role?

If we are going to get some players from the pre-season, I prefer that it isn't duds who have been delisted. The reason we are down the bottom of the ladder is because the majority of the players we picked up in 2003 are crap. We cannot really too much on experienced players and quick fixes if we want to win a premiership in 3/4 years time, we need to pick young players.

VFL form counts for nothing...........Clarke, Doering, Culpitt, Davies and the like have dominated in the VFL over past few years, yet do diddly squat at AFL level.

******** me.............

Now we want to recruit Jason Cloke ?

Who next Rhys Shaw ????

Beeter off holding onto Norman (see if he comes good - he's no worse than Cloke), and failing that hopefully some of the younger talent recruited last year (Hartlett, Raso) will have developed.

The PSD should be used to pic up a gun with pick 1, the club needs to get into the ear of some quality unsigned talent available & hopefully get a commitment & stitch up the deal.

I'm happy to do a Hawks / St. Kilda & lay low for a few years accumalating picks & quality talent rather than prop ourselves up with foot soldiers.

We have enough of these working types already, as we have seen, the results are often hit & miss.

Mal Michael is out of contract this season...wasn't happy with brisbane after last year's GF, wants to come back to vic with a very young family......go for him

If he is too old to give him a 3 year contract, then he is probably too old to be any long term value.

Lets hope its similar to 2 years prior when Jade Rawlings & Nick Stevens were available.

I think the club needs to be ruthless in its persuit of a player to fall through the cracks & ensure we get him for zero outlay (ie. picks or a quality player).

Having pick 1 is the PSD is vital, vital to our trade period & its basically pot luck if you get anywhere from pick 2 onwards. (Depending on the list of available players).

However, I'd rather us take no one than settle for a delisted middle of the road offcut.

Why would you get rid of Digby Morrell and then pick up F.ucking Jason Cloke. Doesn't make sense to me. Morrell is a hell of alot more versatile than Cloke as the third tall in defence or up forward and he is a much better player.

Personally would hold on to Digby...the idea is more to get a big defender (doesn't have to be Cloke if there is someone else available) so we don't have to play forwards as backmen. Digby himself said he doesn't really have the strength to play a key defensive role and sees himself best suited as second or third tall in the forward half. Whoever we recruit doesn't have to be a gun, 10 year player (although that would be nice) but someone to play COMPENTENTLY on the talls when Livingston or Thornton are injured or on the third tall when they play very tall in the forward line (e.g. like Richmond did when they thrashed us). The likes of Prendergast and Bannister don't seem to be up to the task and Teague is too short sometimes. Cloke might be an option...and I think he would make a better, stronger backman than Digby, Prendergast, Bannister or Norman (given recent form...although I hope Norman turns it around)...but it doesn't have to be Cloke. It would be great if a gun (e.g Cornes or Kossi) nominates for the PSD but if this doesn't happen, IMO, we need to figure out how to get a BACKUP ruckman and tall defender and hopefully rebuild the midfield slowly through the normal draft. We can build from the ground up over the next several years through the normal draft but unless we address these problems (and we're only talking about PSD picks here...not top 20 picks in the national draft) I think things may be just as ugly next year. Sure we are rebuilding but we need to at least try and be competitive over the next year or two while the likes of Raso and Hartlett come through the ranks..the idea of going to non-competitive games for 2006 and 2007 is too depressing!

I also think our midfield is really missing Barnarby...we have been loosing hitouts massively and Kouta, Stevens and Campo are all carrying some knee problems. So we should be able to at least compete in the midfield next year while Walker, Russell and our first round draft picks learn the game.

Pollack for Freo is out of contract and the word around the traps is the blues are having a big crack at him for PSD. Could be a big help down back, so they can stop playing Lance down there. Would not touch cloke. I would use Houla, lance ,campo for trade swaps rebuild and rebuild hard yes we will be down for 3-40 but lets do it right and no patch work crap like o'reilly, hawker, athorn, davernport, mansfield,

Fev and Polak came to blows in the offseason. Both have the same manager and he got all of his players together for a social thing. Fev monstered Polak according to Crackers Keenan. Would be unlikely that Polak will stab his own team in the back to come to Carlton.

Include Murphy and McKernan onto that list as well.

Gee, hasn't our recruiting been absolutely pathetic?

he was only good cause he was playing a loose man in defence. Without an opponent and with no presure even morell can have a good game.

chad fletcher or daniel kerr, they would be ideal, although unlikely.

Note: our guys need to get into the gym and get on the WCE weights program.
