Lonie building his case for a permanent spot:

Hearing plenty of good things about Jack this preseason.

Hopefully he gets right back to his first season best and better. I'd just about mentally put a line through his name after a couple of seasons at AFL level where he seemed a shadow of his first year for so much of them, but if he can recapture his best and then go to new levels he could certainly be an asset for us, with his pressure, skills, smarts and creativity.

Very loose definition of "aerobic improvement":

"Welsh said the 21-year-old had taken significant strides with his running across the past month.

In St Kilda's opening 3km time-trial of the new year, Lonie equalled his personal best time around the track at Seaford to underline his aerobic improvements this summer"

Yeh i got out of article is he didn’t come back in best of shape but has now caught up .when i went to training the other week of all players he looked to have changed the least

If Lonie want's to be a small forward, he needs to put the score on the board. Simple.
"make the most of his opportunities".

I don't expect him to be a 2 goal a game forward, there aren't that many, but he needs to do more than half a goal per game.
A goal a game would keep him on the list, 1.5 would keep him in the 22.

Big loss for GWS - Zac Williams
Big loss for Carlton - Sam Docherty
Big loss for Crows - Smith

a lot of people are picking the Crows for top 4 , I feel they will battle , not having Lever , Smith and Cameron this year , they are big loses.
With a aging Betts they might be lucky to be top 8.
But the home ground is a big plus.
Not a chance Adelaide miss the 8.

That’s actually the opposite to what Rohan Welsh says in the article.
Guess it shows how much importance teams are putting on forward pressure these days.

Well its not the opposite, Rohan says he doesn't necessarily need three a game. But he does need to create opportunities to score, whether its from him or others.

Far more likely is Port who start years 0 & 4, trundle a bit, finish strong and maybe pinch a spot before fizzing out if you're going to pick an Adelaide team to not make it.

Part of Lonies issue however was that he was also being ragdolled due to his light frame, so whilst it is great to see that he has and can continue to increase his ability for repeat efforts and to last in a game aerobically, there's been no real comment on addressing his core be his low centre of gravity being able to impact slightly more strength / movement or otherwise, which may similarly limit him in match situations.

Yeah, I can see Adelaide not making the prelim but not collapsing and missing finals. Agree on Port, sometimes too many changes can cause an imbalance and the existing players take the foot off.

Encouraging to hear that Lonie is having a good preseason. In his first year he looked really dangerous, seemed to stagnate and lose confidence recently but still think he can be a very good player for us.

Also really pleasing to hear about Battle. He's a bit like an insurance policy on Paddy.

Collingwood is considered a team with an excellent midfield and a weaker spine.

Pendlebury v Steven...they win just
Treloar v Seb Ross ...break even
Taylor Adams v Steele...They win but getting closer
Sidebottom v Sinclair...they win easily but closing the gap
Wells v Koby They win but not by a heap
De Goey v Dunstan...both building both close
Levi Greenwood v Acres...Acres easily

They have about 4 others like Phillips and Broomhead coming through and so do we with a pile of decent youth options and Armo.

Do the comparisons with any team and the depth and quality is developing at the Saints.

You've forgotten our Mr Invisible. Jack Newnes.

The last time we played Collingwood Newnes had 32 disposals with 22 kicks at 71.9% DE. Sidebottom had 31 disposals with 22 kicks at 51.6% DE. Taylor Adams had 39 disposals with 12 kicks at 66% DE. Adam Treloar had 28 disposal for 12 kicks at 66.7% DE. Levi Greenwood had 17 disposals. WHE had 14. Pendlebury had 25 for 6 kicks.

I distinctly remember watching that game and thinking I'd rather have another Jack Newnes than an Adams or Treloar.

One small thing that might not actually be small that could make a positive difference is the feedback Richo said he got that he was focusing too much on what they weren't doing well, and not giving enough positive feedback for what they were doing well.

I reckon it's really important he gets that right, as it can be a real drag when someone's like that with you, and it can make what you're doing seem more like a chore, and suck the life and fun out of it, and it also puts you under more pressure, and possibly focusing more on not stuffing up, rather than what you actually want to do, and just focusing all your energy on that.

Reckon Lonie might be one who has been impacted by this. In his first season he was a bit of a "livewire", who did exciting things and had Schneids predicting that he would be a "superstar", but this last couple of years it's been a bit like he's had the life or spark sucked out of him.

I also felt numerous times in the last year or so and commented here previously that I regularly got the vibe from the team that they weren't really enjoying playing footy, that it was more like just a job, and that this might be why they so often folded like a pack of cards, with little resistance, once they started to get well beaten in games.

Was really interesting to hear that one of the things Hardwick did differently this year and probably last preseason was bringing the element of fun and joy back into their footy and training, and I have little doubt it's one of the many reasons they improved so dramatically.

I think it's fair to say that most if not all are going to be a lot more keen/likely to really give their job their all and look to do it really well if they really enjoy it, rather than if it's largely just a chore, that they're not getting much enjoyment from.

I know Billings has improved, but still needs to do more. I reckon if all Saints were on the market to be snapped up right now, Gresham would be the first plucked by a cashed up club.
The fact that Billings is consistently one of our best players and can just dominant games for periods, but "still needs to do more" just shows how much ability he has. His current output would be considered a lot of regular players ceilings.

Absolutely, I think we all know the talent he has is unmatched by most of the comp, which is why we expect so much from him.

The thing he probably needs to improve most (outside his goalkicking) is his consistency. He played some cracking games last year, but there was too big a gap between his best and his worst, and there were too many average games there (especially early season), but hopefully that will continue to improve as he gets fitter and/or stronger.

This is only his 2nd full preseason in about 5 or 6 years apparently, and he's only now got a manly looking build, so it's no surprise he's still got plenty of improvement there.

Completely mirroring the team. So if he and a few others can start to get that right, then there's only one way we'll be heading, and that's up!

It's kinda funny, like only 2-3 years ago. People were calling Billings a 'flop','bust' now he's one of the most important players in our team and one of the most exciting in the AFL when on top form.

Bont and Billings are both good players, but...

BILLINGS > BONT

If Coffield really makes it in the midfield we are cooking with gas.

How many play midfield in the AFL who are 191cm or more and have elite speed, evasiveness and kicking? He could be pretty unique.

I was impressed with the last two attributes in particular in the draft videos that were available before we picked him. Let's hope he comes on and applies himself and does what it takes to become an elite AFL footballer

Is Ed Phillips going to get a game this season? Or Bailey Rice?
Rice was going to get a game late last year before he got injured. He'll play a handful of games this year I would imagine.

Makes the right decisions too with very limited time. He could be a beauty

Yeah that's one of the most impressive things about him. In the blink of an eye he can have the ball on his boot and hit someone lace-out with a bullet pass.

Good luck teaching that to those who don't do it naturally!

Was pretty exciting reading what they said about him. Not only ahead of the others (who they also talked up), but clearly ahead. Sounds like he could make a decent impact in yr 1.

He reminds me a bit of Yeo. Something we need in our best 22.
