Preview Preview and Changes Vs Adelaide

I just heard the Westhoff comment and I think there's a bit of over-reaction going on.

It was more from Rowe "You're the coach Browny, what do you do with Westhoff? How do you stop Westhoff?" and he replies "I don't know, um put the ball on his head etc ... I don't know". He was laughing through that bit, just caught up in the buffoonery of Rowe. It came across more as a compliment to Westhoff to me than some veiled threat.

Don't know about the other stuff, but is there really an issue with him coming across as believing he can beat an opponent?

I'm as easily offended as the next Port supporter but he really came across in the bit I heard as a kid caught up in the moment kidding around with a fellow crow in Rowe.

So what did he say?

It wasn't what he said, it was the way he said it!

Well, how did he say it?

I don't remember exactly, but the message was clear: Our team stinks!

If you listen to just the comments themselves, they are harmless. But there is definitely an undercurrent of arrogance with all the Crow interviews that have been done, and the Luke Brown one was just the one that confirmed their attitude towards us and the match in general. It's the slight delay when they ask if it's going to be a hard game, the dismissive approach to matchups etc. Make no mistake, these moos think they are going to waltz it in - probably back slapping themselves right now saying how their season is back on track since they didn't expect to lose to Essendon, but made up for it in Brisbane.

When Rowe interviews a crowie it's like a bar room chat among fellow supporters. Brown is a kid who was caught up in the moment. His Westhoff comment for me came across more as 'I don't know how I would stop Westhoff'. Look whatever fires people up, it doesn't matter to me. It's funny though that we hear a lot about the over the top aspects of the rivalry then make something out of what came across to me as a nothing comment. I don't disagree with your general perception Janus, but in this case Brown doesn't deserve a volley of contempt.

I was more annoyed at Sanderson saying (and Felchstad interpreting) how the crows would turn the game into a shutdown contest as if 1) they get to dictate how the game is played and 2) we are some sort of free wheeling run ahead of the ball downhill skiers. Yes we move the ball well but so do they when they get on top. Our willingness for contested ball and tackling under Hinkley is unquestioned. That's a far more measured statement from A-list Sando than some silly banter between a kid and Rowe (who cheers when he finishes a jigsaw in 6 months because it says 3-5 years on the box).

They played the Westhoff comment between segments, and it didn't come across to me as Brown being an arrogant twat. Rowe could easily have followed up with 'You better watch out for Jay Schulz's sprigs in the back of your head when he flies for a screamer' and Brown probably would have laughed along. Of course Rowe would never say that.

Anyway, maintain your rage. ;)

I think the comment about Tex running through Westhoff came across poorly but I agree it wasn't so bad - however when it was mentioned to him about Neade being a strong tackler, his 'I'll be right' reeked of arrogance.

Oh well, you expect a player to be confident. Maybe he should be a little more media savvy and not come out and say it outright. Could come back to bite him. ;)

Reading Vesper Felchstad's reporting of Sanderson's comments I couldn't help but wonder if he or Sanderson saw any of our NAB Cup win over Sydney, the masters of the shutdown game.

Well he was probably just some kid who got "egged on" by Crowie but I'm hoping his lesson is learnt swiftly and painfully. Disregard Port at your own peril.

While that is true, teams very rarely instigate full shutdown and negating tactics in the NAB cup - this is directly from Roos, so I suspect a bit of that would be in Longmire's approach.

Rowe - "So how are you going to handle Westhoff?"
Brown - "Handle him? We'll just put the ball on his head and let Tex run through him"

Brown - "I can stand anybody"

Rowe - "Reckon you'd be able to stand Neade?"
Brown - "I'll be right"

Just the smug tone in which he said it in. You'd better get a kick now young man.

That kid better be watching over his shoulder now.

What's the deal with Angus Graham? Didn't play for Sturt today. Injured or on stand by?

I do get the feel for this game that the Cow supporters are a little concerned that we may be a little quicker to suggest to do the "Bickley thing" to try and stop us, where as we are concentrating more on game than trying to belt them of the park.

I can't wait for this game to start, because this is the true test for us. Hopefully this will bring so much determination to our players and coaches to win this game to set us on path where we could be 5-0......

I always feel uneasy about these games. This one particularly has so many unknowns and it's really difficult to get a form line for either team right now. So hard to call.

think i read somewhere injury. could be wrong. if he is in, its a + for us

Lulz. If Jacobs is out for Graham, then we can drop all three of Redden/Lobbe/Renouf and send out Jake Neade on a pogo stick.

I doubt Jacobs is out. Quite possible we've forced them into picking two rucks to combat Renouf and Lobbe though.

Add the fact that the Lions, who were smashed to the tune of 3 goals by the crows, just beat the Suns by 2 points. Are the Suns much improved or are the Lions crap

Somehow I doubt that the Renouf and Lobbe combination will be striking fear into the heart of the opposition, especially after the Showdown last year. They didn't play two rucks against Ryder and Bellchambers, they're not gonna do it against Renouf and Lobbe.

More likely than not Graham just picked up a knock or something. I'd be very surprised if he played.

And Jacobs was thrashed by Ryder and Bellchambers. Just saying its a possibility.

Graham and Brodie Martin were late withdrawals for Sturt on Saturday. Kerridge and Riley were ruled out during the week.

Reckon the likes of Douglas, Wright and McKay give Adelaide a bit more depth and quality in their midfield. They have the edge on paper at both the top end (Dangerfield, Thompson, Jacobs, Walker) and the bottom end.

If we win, 1) it will mean that great credit should be given to our evolution as a team ( much like the old days of Port v Glenelg's superstars in the late 80's and 1990) and 2) some of our individuals are taking the next step.

A win today would be an incredibly strong endorsement of Hinkley's methods and Burgo's influence on our fitness. Going to be fascinating.
