I'm interested to get people thoughts and opinions on Matt Priddis 2014 Brownlow win 12 months on. Priddis taking home Charlie produced a large amount of discussion, some positive on the win and some not so.

His 2015 season has been statically better. Has anyone's opinion changed?

Priddis will poll fewer votes in 2015 despite having a "statistically" better year because in 2014, he played more of a somewhat lone-hand for non-finalist. West Coast have had a far better season in 2015 with good players across the board enjoying their career best years. I figure he'll have more competition for votes from his teammates. Gaff, Nicnat, Shuey, Masten, Kennedy, Wellingham, Yeo, McGovern, etc will poll more votes this year.

I had no problems with him winning the Brownlow last year. I thought it was a great result. I love it when an outsider wins it.

Gaff is a small chance to win this year.

Opinions shouldn't have changed - the brownlow is for the stand alone season.

However, I think acceptance will be better anyway. People probably didnt view him as Brownlow calibre and now that he's lifted they do. Depsite the award being for one season

Yeah very true. However a number of posters were saying worst Brownlow winner of all time.. etc. Now with the added awareness I wonder if that has changed.

He wasn't the best player in the competition last year so his Brownlow victory was a sham.

His performance in 2015 doesn't make any difference to that.

It isn't only us that you need to convinve. It is your fellow Eagles supporters that called him an overrated hack last year.

I've never understood the hate
I think a lot have had to come full circle and acknowledge he is a fine player.

Isn't the Brownlow meant to go to the best player in the comp?

Surely that means it shouldn't be 'a surprise'.
It depends how you figure the best player though. I think the brownlow is probably the best way of subjectively doing that. Accumulating points for performances during each game and then saying that whoever got the most points had the best year is logical.

What measure would have plausibly concluded that Priddis was the best player last season?

Some years, it's relatively even and there are 3-4 guys who could be deserving winners. And that's fine - if it's hard to split and one of them wins, so be it. But Priddis wasn't even close last season. It was an aberrant result.

I think the AFLPA award has actually been more credible over the past decade or so.

What people are sometimes quick to forget is that the Brownlow is an award that is voted on and decided by the umpires.

The same umpires that currently have a 30 page thread on this board dedicated to their incompetence.

Shouldn't the Brownlow be based on the people's consensus about who is the better player in general?
None of this "best player in any single year" nonsense.

Where are you guys getting that idea from? Could you honestly say that Fyfe has been better than Dangerfield or Goldstein over the entire season?

It takes 10 games to win a Brownlow.

All those guys would be worthy winners.

If a player is BOG 10 times in one season, he's had a very good year.

As all the self proclaimed footy 'experts' have said, over a dozen West Coast players have had career best seasons. While I still expect Priddis to be the leading vote getter for West Coast, he will have a lot of votes 'taken' off him by Gaff, Kennedy, Naitanui and Shuey. West Coast have had a lot more consistent year and as a consequence a lot more consistent players, therefore he won't win the Brownlow again.

Tbh I prefer the umpires to the media though, or else you would just get media darlings like Cyril, biddy, fyfe etc getting votes for mediocre games with a couple of highlights

Its kind of like how Sammy Mitchell is a red-hot goer in the eyes of many after his finals campaign, despite a pretty poor couple of months in the middle of the season.

I questioned his award last year and considered him the in the same class as that guy Woewodin. His 2015 though has been fantastic and if he won the brownlow this year, he would be very deserving. Even if he doesn't win this year, he has demonstrated his is more than just a hard working honest footballer who had a good patch. He has become a champion of the game.

Outside of the injured ablett and the suspended fyfe priddis was the next best. Winning the brownlow judged by the umpires proves that, he can't help what happened to ablett and fyfe. It's pretty simple. Just because people didn't take notice doesn't mean he wasn't deserving of every vote he got. Good on him. Hope he wins it again.
