I'm interested to get people thoughts and opinions on Matt Priddis 2014 Brownlow win 12 months on. Priddis taking home Charlie produced a large amount of discussion, some positive on the win and some not so.

His 2015 season has been statically better. Has anyone's opinion changed?
Should be a huge chance this year.

Still not sure of why people still question Pridda.

He had been amongst our top pollers in Brownlow for a few years in a side not performing particularly well. He won a Sandover Medal in WAFL competition. Honest footballer week in week out, top of ladder or bottom of ladder.

Best thing by far I heard was Priddis say in an interview he finally sees himself as a Brownlow Medalist. He was pivotal in the run on we had last night. Quality through and through and hoping for a good showing at the voting again.

He is a Scott West that wins brownlows.

Will poll high again this year, even a chance to go back-to-back.

Good luck to him.

Isn't the Brownlow meant to go to the best player in the comp?

Surely that means it shouldn't be 'a surprise'.

Yes that's why Wayne Carey has 5 of them.

It has nothing to do with best player. Priddis was the highest vote receiver in games that the Eagles played in. His tally just happened to be higher than every other player in the league. That's why he won the Brownlow. It's not a sham, it's the system.

We know there is a bias toward midfielders. Further evidence that the Brownlow is massively overrated as an award.

The Brownlow is meant to go to the best player in the league in a given season. Whether it actually does that is open to debate.

No it's not or else they wouldn't tally votes after each game.

The Brownlow goes to highest vote getter. Last season it was Priddis and thoroughly deserved.

Yes, that's the system set up to determine who wins the award. But the award is still meant to go to the competition's best and fairest player. That's what it says on the tin. That's the point of the award.

But you can argue that up is down if you like.

He wasn't the competition's best player.

It goes to fairest and best player by vote count. Priddis was that player last year.

How long have you been a football follower?

That makes sense if you are willing to ignore the point of the award.

Ultimately, if it's that arbitrary, then what is the Brownlow for? If it's not actually awarded to the best player in the league, then what's the point of it?

Woewodin was more deserving in 2000 than Wanganeen was in 1993. This career justification stuff is a fallacy.

Priddis was an obvious top 5 last year even if the punters bought into the Lewis and Gray hype. An injury to Ablett and suspension to Fyfe was enough to see him through.

Pretty sure Matt Priddis stole Sweet Jesus' girlfriend at some point in their childhood.

It reveals something about you that you think even mild criticism of a player points to some kind of romantic dysfunction.

It certainly invites people to speculate about why that would be uppermost in your mind when it comes to possible motives.

Not necessarily. I've just posted in one of the other threads that for all Fyfe's dominance in the first half of the season, he can still only poll a maximum of 3 per game. There may have been other players not as obviously dominant that have polled enough in the same period to keep somewhere near him who then have a strong back half to the season and mow him down.

You generally need to be consistently good for the whole of the season.

I still wouldn't have him near my top 5 players in the comp

I wouldn't either but for me it doesn't make him an unworthy winner and I'd be rapt if he happened to back it up this year.

Because Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett Snr, Carey, Dunstall etc didn't win Brownlows, does that mean that every single person who won one during those player's careers was unworthy?

Yep. Even if every player on the ground has a bad game someone still gets 3 votes. To get an actual best player you would need to grade every ones performance out of 10 then add it up at the end of the year.

Scott West was and still is, one of the most over-rated players of all time.

Stop trying to perpetuate the myth he was a star, it ain't going to stick.
