I know of a guy who played for carlton about 10 years ago from WA who had potential but it didn't work out went back to perth and killed himself. It was sad but whatcha know

I was upset when i heard that paul salmon wanted to kill himself over a stupid knee reconstruction back in 1984 ! God there is more to life than football.

If some one kid out there wants to blast just because he wasn't drafted and worked hard all his life i can understand but really - footballers are such a spoilt bunch of pretty boys that (apart from Jason Cripps and a few other hard luck cases) shouldnt suffer from depression. What's wrong fellas, not getting laid enough or enough dough ?

You said there is more to life then football.

Well maybe thats the answer in the first place.

Yes, someone might be successful at their job, or doing something they enjoy, but it could be in other aspects of their life that they are failing. Maybe these aspects come ahead of their football, and could drive them to suicide.

Why did Kurt Cobain kill himself? (Chris, and probably others, I know you have theories he actually was killed...I personally think he did suicide...so let's leave it there...)

He was successful, rich, had a kid, was in the prime of his life.

He was all eaten up inside by being married to Courtney Love who was cheating on him, he was on heroin, he thought he and Nirvana had sold out, and the authorities were always looking at their kid to take her away.

While I'm not saying that life would be that warped for an A.F.L. footballer, you have to remember that football is these guys life. Tehir hopes dreams, financial security...in their mind perhaps everything depends on this great game.

Depressive Illness can hit anybody. We might perceive the life of a footballer as easy but I bet the reality of the situation is a lot different. Off the top of my head I can identify a large number of areas which might trigger a depressive episode: players who have moved interstate missing their families (remember a lot of players are basically kids), players feeling down when they are not playing well, players being injured and missing out playing in finals (even the Grand Final), players being sick of the public scrutiny they are put under, players retiring and feeling 'lost' without football, etc

Although I agree there is more to life than football, we must remember that these blokes have worked most of their lives towards playing at the top level and when something goes wrong it must be a bitter blow.

And Davros, I'd suggest money and sex have very little bearing on whether someone develops depression or not.

I can't get my head around that these some of these boys are making $300,000 a year and a lot of them are only 19 to 21 years of age.

That has to be daunting in itself.

One thing you can not do, is pass judgement. Also, take into account that when things start to happen to these young men, their only around the age of 15 & 16. That is when they should be representing their State and then the next step is the Draft.

I don't know what I was doing at the age but it wasn't expected of me to step up and be an adult on my 16th birthday.

At 16, I would say your mind would be full of expectation of being a footy star and the glory that is to come. Who knows what they go through when it doesn't come off.

Did you mean "nipped in the bud"?

And what have Richmond supporters done in 17 of the last 19 seasons when they have missed the finals? Demolished a whole pack of iced vo-vos and kept their false teeth in at the same time?:D :D :D :D :D
year what? lol
ok ok ya got me there with all the above lol
cheers!

I would think that AFL players would be in a very high risk category for suicide and depression, especially Melbourne-based players.

The adulation that league footballers get lavished upon them in Melbourne is nothing short of obscene. We put these extremely fallible and, in most cases, very immature people on the most ridiculous pedestal. Is it any wonder that they stuff up. And they stuff up a lot. If they're not getting drunk and making pigs of themselves in public places they're screwing up in their own private hell.

It comes down to the "star" system. The same fame game that the rock stars play.

I suppose if you live by the sword, you should be prepared to die by the sword. By this, I mean that if you are going to cop all the goodies that come with being a footballer ... the obscene salaries, the idolatry, the obsequiousness of the hangers-on, the nubile footy sluts throwing themselves at you ... then you've got to cop the pressures that go with being under the public microscope. And you've gotta find enough spiritual maturity to deal with it. And if you don't ... it will f*ck you over ... BIG-TIME.

You may not necessarily kill yourself ... but you'll wind up a complete d*ckhead, going to night clubs, staying till stumps and then getting swept out with the cigarette butts. Or trying anything and everything to fill up the empty pit inside, where your soul is supposed to be (but it's not ... because you sold it for fame)

And as you get older and older, fewer and fewer people will be interested in how you kicked all those goals in a losing grand final ... or how they used to call you "God" ... or how you got paid that mark that you didn't really hold ... or ... (sorry, I'm getting carried away here).

Yeah. Footy players are prime suicide material ... if they allow themselves to believe all the bullsh*t that we fans keep feeding them.

When Shane Woewodin, Russell Robertson and Adem Yze came to my school they talked about their work in a nutshell and i can tell you that its nothing but easy. Sure there are big bucks and they do what they love but there is a lot of hard work, and day to day pressure they have to deal with.
So many people suffer from depression and sometimes you don't even know why coz their life seems so good from the outside but inside they are very confussed and hurting.
The problem with being a footballer or a proffesional athlete is that unlike many proffesions its very easy to go up and down. You are under pressure to preform and if you don't than you are critized by the whole nation... i mean thats gotta be hard.
I don't know of any footballers who have committed suicide but I can certainly think of a couple.

well i was gonna write a whole piece on it, but after reading this, i agree with Alf. pretty much anyway. Unless you are involved with the club, and its depth, all we, the ordinary fan sees is the glamorous side of it. when it isnt glamorous at all.

I actually believe Kurt Cobain was killed as well. His 'suicide note' was not in his usual handwriting...in fact it was completly different...there was a site on the internet that basically proved that he was killed.....it was a 'document' of over 1000 pages long...it took me a month to read about 950 pages, and then the site got 'deleted'.

It was a fantastic document which gave many many valid reasons which showed and basically proved that Courtney Love had Kurt killed.

The Carlton player who topped himself was Rhett Baynes.

My God, I did not know that..... I don't get much footy news on the Gold Coast obviously.

That is incredibly sad, I remember Rhett as a kid with potential. Thought he could have done something special. I can't believe that.:(

Oh yeah, congrats to those with absolutely no sensitivity, you must be so proud?

How can anyone be surprised about this - the bloke plays for Collingwood for christs sake!

Even their only premiership captain in the modern era Tony Shaw bags the **** out of them. People are embarrassed to be linked with this sorry arse club.

I'd rather both my nuts cut off and shoved up my arse than support Collingwood - THE MOST DEPRESSIVE TEAM OF ALL TIME!!!!

and what self respect would you have left after a little ugly funt like tony shaw bagged you out and made you have golden showers..err i mean cold showers in front of a minority supporters group

suicide..he shouldnt have tried drinking the month old milk..he should have gone to joffa's place and sat next to his missus..the body odour would kill ya ten times over
