Now that I have a 500gb PS3 I though I'd order Play TV from the UK (It doesn't look like it's going to launch in Aus until our digital broadcasters sort themselves out and it's all up and running).

Anyone had a play with it yet?

I'll post my impressions as soon as I get it.

What is it?

It turns the Playstation into a personal video recorder.

Play TV has some software and a usb tuner. The tuner is actually 2 digital HD tuners. When running you can browse the EPG with your playstation, set programs to record, pause/rewind live TV. You can set it to record the same show each week.

The shows you record can then be exported to the XMB where they are treated like any other video file - you can copy them to external media if you wish.

Having 2 tuners means you can be watching one channel and recording another at the same time. It also supports recording while you are playing a game.

OK, I have been using it and it looks pretty damn good. I have set it to record the footy for me on Friday night.

I recorded The Simpsons tonight which worked really well. The steps to get video viewable on your PSP or Ipod are as follows.

  1. In PlayTV go to your library and export the selected video to the XMB.
  2. Copy it from the XMB to a flash drive.
  3. Take the flash drive to your PC and copy the file.
  4. Use a converter such as PSP Video 9 to convert the video.
  5. Transfer it to your PSP and watch away.
Also you can use this with remote play and so if you have your PSP in a wireless hotspot, you can access any of the videos on your PS3 or watch live TV with it remotely.

I uploaded a bit from the news to give you an idea of the quality.

Play TV being advertised on the EB Games website, no info on price or release date, but that it's up there means it will be coming soon, most likely when it was planned for around July.

I have a 1TB external HDD, could I use it for something like this? We're getting Foxtel soon but would be good for when IQ inevitably gets full.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can. Pretty sure you have to record it straight to the PS3 hard drive.

You could probably copy it to the external drive, but it would have to be under 4GBs in size (with the external drive having to be formatted to fat32), and I don't think you can record much with 4GBs. I read somewhere on the whirlpool playtv thread (I think?) where they said approx how much time takes up 4gbs in both HD and SD. Was something like an hour for SD and half hour for HD I think, or less - I just remember thinking I couldn't record a movie or the footy and transfer it to pc.

Like I said I may be wrong though - I were looking into it a couple of months back and can't remember it fully, hopefully someone else knows for sure?

Yep, the files are massive. I recorded a game of footy in HD and it was 27gb.

Im guessing if you want to stream video to your psp you will need good internet?

Depends on how you're streaming it.

I don't have a PSP but you can link it in a couple of ways, either directly or over the net. If you just wanted to stream it to your psp in another room then your connection wont matter. TO do it over the net I would think you would need a reasonable wuality but I would think it wouldn't send the complete file, it would be very compressed for the small PSP screen.

I already have an external setup, only difference is it's not "live tv" like Play tv. When i've connected my ps3 to the computer network, i've been able to watch the stuff i've recorded from my HDTV capture card. Have even been able to transfer it from my computers hdd to the ps3 hdd in the raw format (luckily the card records in .mpeg format).

It's quite a nifty thing to be able to do.
