Hey guys, I have basically become pretty interesting in punting lately(mainly horses, sometimes greyhounds), so I'm wondering if there are any books out there than can help me understand how things work and help me get a better understanding of how conditions, weight etc affect the horses etc.

tl;dr - Books to help me understand horse racing

Thanks for the help.

the best way to learn is to just buy your local form guide (Tabform) and perhaps simulate a day's punting i.e. don't outlay any money, but keep a record of what you'd bet if you were betting for cash. Then sit back and watch a few races, looking at the winners and deciding for yourself why they won, keeping in mind race distance, form, class, finishing speed, barrier, gear changes etc.

There is no substitute for experience and just getting involved like this will help you understand the terminology/abbreviations used and how to pick more winners than losers.

An Australian classic. First published in the 70's and underwent a few reprints/minor updates to 1995, so some parts are naturally a little dated e.g. discussion of the class system. For an explanation of the most important factors from a punting perspective and an overview of Australian racing in general, I'm not aware of anything better. Well written and an entertaining read.

$155 second-hand is surely a scam though.

Commonsense Punting by Roger Dedman is informative and focuses on the mathematics of punting and staking. Not as easy to read though.
