I understand the nature of footy and what one season does to perception but I hope I'm not the only person who isn't writing off Lynch.

Granted he had an ordinary season, I think he is capable of still being quite a serviceable second/third tall forward.

Chris Dawes went from a very good premiership forward to a very sub-standard forward when thrust into the Leigh Brown role, and the same thing seems to have happened to the Q-Stick. I think that we shouldn't under-rate the influence of having to play that specific role, and Collingwood has tried too hard to replicate a Leigh Brown, when it just hasn't been there. You cannot turn some forwards into back up ruckman, pretty simple. It doesn't mean they've become shyte forwards. Being a good tall forward entails confidence and Dawes circa 2012 as well as Lynch 2013; there just was no confidence, and that reflected in their performance. Similiar thing has happened to Trav Cloke at stages of his career.

If Collingwood can allow the Q-Stick to play as a pure forward, he will be, at the very least, serviceable in 2014.

I don't think Pies fans should be writing him off so quickly. Especially since it is only his first season at the club, having to play in a forward set up that was quite terrible from the get go.

I thought his performances as a backup ruck were far better than what he achieved as a 2nd/3rd forward option.
I'd agree, but if he was played purely as a forward, I think his output would be far more beneficial for our team than that of a back-up ruckman. Especially for our forward set up, and helping take pressure off Cloke. Let the guy play as a forward and recruit an actual ruckman who can play around the ground as a back up.

I still think he can offer something to the best 22, however I disagree that it is as a 2nd key forward. I see him being better as a high CHF and relief ruck. He can be a good roving big man/ link up type player, especially if he gets that big boot back in action.

Imagine the Q stick running around on 300k!
Combine that with Clinton young (reported 300k)who played not even 1 game?
We dudded in the trade draft!
Look at Brian Lake! Norm Smith medalist!
Wow? If only?

With the idea of moving Reid back?

I thought his marking and leading was average at best and his struggles while kicking at goal have been well documented, however around the ground when playing in the ruck he usually offered a contest and some of his linking work around high half forward and the wing was quite good.

Will be interesting to see what happens if we get White.

Can someone explain to me why they think the 'Leigh Brown role' is so much different from a standalone forward role?

In the 'Leigh Brown role' the player in question plays 80% of their time as a standalone forward. The same role in which some are suggested has been sacrificed. if he can't play the forward component of the hybrid role (80% game time) well, then why do people think they can play the whole 100% as a forward any better?

The back-up ruck just takes them out of this role for 15-20% of their time. If they were full time forwards, it would just mean they would be dropping marks and missing shots 100% of the time rather than 80% of the time.

How would you like to have Hamish Mac running around on 500+k?
We did exceptionally well in the draft. We did not give up anything for Q, Young or Russell for the umpteenth time.

I thought he was great for the first few games.
I'm not writing him off, he played half the year with a back injury. Who knows how that will affect him next year, but if he can get some penetration back in his kicking I still think he's in the team. He can Ruck and also take marks around the ground.
At the very worst we need him as backup forward

Waste of cash! Maybe 750k for the year of 2013!
Now Collingwood is on the verge of losing Dale Thomas over money!
When you have 3 guys who are not playing but using up the sallery cap then you make a call and say that we for dudded!
Got them for free?
Free Agency means that clubs have to pay overs for Free Agent players!
Essentually players demanding a blank cheque payday! (Hence you Hamish Mac example)

Pay overs? Mate we are not talking marquee players here so don't pull saying out of your backside.
Lynch & Russell would have come over for less than they were on at their original club. Clinton Young might have gotten one more year than the Hawks were offering him.

Let's live by your hypothetical world and we don't trade for Q and Keep Dawes. So Dawes is out injured for most of the year, you going to come on here and ask for someone to be sacked. Am i right?

Posters like you only exist to come and tell us what could have, should have happened looking at the benefit of hindsight. If you have the guts why don't you tell us who should be drafted in 2013? And we will judge how good you are this time next year?

And just in time...You have no idea about drafting mate..

COLLINGWOOD
IN Quinten Lynch (WC), Clinton Young (Haw), Jordan Russell (Carl)
OUT Chris Dawes (Melb), Sharrod Wellingham (WC), Tom Young (WB)

DRAFT PICKS: 18 (Brodie Grundy), 19 (Ben Kennedy), 20 (Tim Broomhead), 38 (Jackson Ramsay)
VERDICT: At the time the Pies looked the biggest winners, but that success has diminished a tad given how Lynch petered out and Young’s body failing him. The Wellingham trade was just about the biggest win of the 28 deals done, given it ended in the Pies landing Grundy. Still, emerged winners, particularly when you throw in the added bonus of nabbing Sam Dwyer in the rookie draft.
RATING: 8/10

Biggest problem with the link is the story says Jack Martin is favourite for next year's rising star. I'm hoping Brodie Grundy takes that honour.

Unfortunately, Jack Martin is a freak player & it will be a sight to watch him play alongside Ablett & Jaeger.

If Hawthorn had recruited Jolly & Ball in 2009 they may have won a flag sooner??
Can never tell how it will work out.....roll the dice.....& hope it falls your way.

All accounts I've heard rate Martin pretty highly. I can't dispute his talent but he appears a bit light so can't see him having same impact as O'Meara. Also I think a 19yr old being able to come in and take the #1 ruck without proper preseason is pretty freaky too.

he probably had one good game, he's exactly like tom hawkins, one game wonder.

Q is one the reason we are finishing where we are on the ladder. He's an ordinary player and we are starting to carry too many of them.
