QAFL 2025 - Tradition V Trivia

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The thread that (almost) nobody wanted!
This year, subject to work and family priorities, I will aim to share some historical info for each round, similar to what appeared in 2024.
I appreciate that these posts are not of interest to everyone, so here they are in a separate thread for 2025. If you want to read them, I hope you enjoy what you see. Alternatively, if this is not your scene at all, please feel free to ignore it.
This can be as serious or as superficial as you wish. Is it self-indulgent? Is it a waste of time? Is it relevant? All of those answers are up to you.
But even if it is simply a diversion from day-to-day matters, that’s not such a bad thing, is it?

First up, I’m seeking opinions please.
How should Coorparoo history be viewed in 2025?
In geographical terms, Coorparoo is the same club as the Roos who played 1,005 QAFL games* leading up to 1993. Whilst on the other hand, the Kings represent a club that evolved from the Treasury club (BAFL), making their QAFL debut this weekend.
I understand both arguments – and if I had to take a side, I would favour a link to the Roos, simply because it provides me with bigger numbers to work with during the season.
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Any passionate perspectives?

A short one for the wet weekend to get started (and I can build from that):

Round 1

Labrador V Broadbeach (confirmed postponed)

Played 63: Labrador 23 – Broadbeach 40 (1997-2024)
Last time they met: Round 8, 2024 – Labrador won by 21 points. (As a result of that game, the aggregated QAFL score between the two clubs has now passed 10,000 points.)
Broadbeach has won 12 of the past 14 games. Across all their games, 11 have been decided by 2 goals or less.
It would be great to uncover the record for their GCAFL clashes – we are talking about an era that covers 1971 to 1996. That’s a significant period of time. And similarly, it is a project that will take a considerable amount of time to complete.

Maroochydore V Aspley
Played 5: Maroochydore 1 – Aspley 4 (2022-2024)
Last time they met: Round 13, 2024 – Maroochydore won by 13 points.
The two clubs first met in the BAFL from 1993 to 1997 – and then, depending on your perspective, in the AFLQ Division 2 from 2005 to 2008.
Within the QAFL, Aspley won the first four encounters.

Coorparoo V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 0: Coorparoo 0 – Palm Beach Currumbin 0 (0000-0000)
Last time they met: They haven’t (ever).
If anyone has any information to the contrary, please feel free to share it with me. However, I would contend that no iteration of Coorparoo has ever played Palm Beach for Senior Premiership Points before.
And further to my earlier post: is this Game 1006 for Coorparoo? Or Game 1 for the Kings? (It is Game 259 for Palm Beach.)
Either way, history will commence with this clash.

Morningside V Redland Victoria Point (confirmed postponed)
Played 39 Morningside 28 - Redland 11 (20000-2013, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Grand Final, 2024 – The Panthers won by 5 points.
Between these two clubs, there have been more games decided by margins greater than 100 points (6), than there have been by margins 12 points or less (5). The Average Winning Margin (either way) is almost 10 goals (59.5 points).
I doubt any of that is going to happen this week, especially in wet weather.

Sherwood V Mt Gravatt
Played 32: Sherwood 11 – Mt Gravatt 21 (2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2024)
Last time they met: Round 15, 2024 – Sherwood won by a record 196 points.
Fortunes have fluctuated for both clubs. What the QAFL records do not reveal is the great rivalry that played out in the SQAFA competitions. This is arguably the quintessential SQAFA Clash. In both clubs’ origins, they had taken the field against each other from 1967 to 1982.
Sherwood require 11 goals to reach their 400th goal against Mt Gravatt in the QAFL comps.

Wilston Grange V Noosa
Played 12: Wilston Grange 10 – Noosa 2 (2011-2013, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 19, 2024 – The Gorillas won by 140 points.
Another clash with pre-QAFL history. These two clubs have also competed across 1998 to 2000 and 2002 to 2010 (BAFL, AFLSQ, & AFLQ Div 2).
Wilston Grange has won the last 4 encounters.
Across their QAFL history, 4 games have been decided by 2 goals or less (Wilston Grange has won each of those 4 games).

None of these 6 clashes this weekend have ever recorded a Draw against each other. Of the 85 Draws in QAFL history. 10 of them have occurred in Round 1 (the most recent being Aspley and Broadbeach in 2023) – so that is statistically prominent.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am definitely happy to correct any records I have saved.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:

Round 1 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Half a round is better than nothing. Here are the QAFL Scorigami references for the three games of Round 1, plus other potentially useless scraps of local trivia:

Maroochydore 13-9-87 d Aspley 6-10-46
Played 6: Maroochydore 2 - Aspley 4 (2022-2025)
Overall 25: Maroochydore 14 – Aspley 11 (1993-1997, 2005-2008, 2022-2025)
Maroochydore has won their past two games against Aspley.
This score has occurred once previously:
1966 PF: Mayne 12-15-87 d Wilston Grange 4-22-46
(That’s an interesting result in itself!)
The margin of 41 points has now occurred 99 times.

Sherwood 15-22-112 d Mt Gravatt 5-3-33
Played 33: Sherwood 12 – Mt Gravatt 21 (QAFL 2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2025)
Overall 91: Sherwood 51 – Mt Gravatt 40 (1968-1982, 2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2014-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
Sherwood has won their past three games against Mt Gravatt.
The Magpies have scored their 400th QAFL goal against Mt Gravatt (404-362-2786).
The margin of 79 points has now occurred 42 times.

Noosa 8-14-62 d Wilston Grange 5-9-39
Played 13: Wilston Grange 10 – Noosa 3 (2011-2013, 2021-2025)
Overall 42: Wilston Grange 15 – Draw 1 – Noosa 26 (1998-2000, 2002-2013, 2021-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The result breaks a 4-game winning streak for Wilston Grange against Noosa.
The margin of 23 points has now occurred 118 times.

Not a lot to spruik about this week. Hopefully a full round this week will provide more to discuss.

It’s a real shame (for a different reason) that several games were postponed last weekend – and here is why:
When Morningside play their third game this season, it will be their 1,500th premiership fixture (for a result) in QAFL-related competitions. Given the Panthers have a bye in Round 2, this game would have occurred in Round 4.
Also, when Wilston Grange play their fourth game this season, they will draw level with Sandgate as having played 1,060 games. That would put them in equal third for the most games played by a club in the QAFL competitions (behind Morningside and Mayne). The Gorillas have no early season byes, so this milestone would have occurred in Round 4.
Based on the original schedule, guess which opponents both clubs have in Round 4? That’s right, each other.
It would have represented a cool moment of synchronicity. I’m sure it is all a coincidence, and was not planned. However, the weather has wrecked all that now.
The milestones will still occur – only now, they will not be in the same match.

Round 2

Labrador V Noosa

Played 7: Labrador 4 – Noosa 3 (2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 17, 2024 – Labrador won by 68 points.
The two clubs had never met until Noosa was promoted to the QAFL in 2021. Across the seven clashes so far, Noosa has kicked 95 goals – so only five more for the ton.
Labrador reached the ton last year: so far they have kicked 100 – 100 – 700 against Noosa.

Coorparoo V Broadbeach
Played 0: Coorparoo 0 – Broadbeach 0 (0000-0000)
Last week, we spoke about the fact that Coorparoo (whether the Roos or the Kings) had never met Palm Beach in a premiership fixture, at any Senior-grade level…and still haven’t.
Well, this week it is déjà vu all over again. The Roo Kings will meet the Cats for the very first time.
(Advance preview: Next week, Coorparoo meet Wilston Grange – and we are dealing with some decent numbers there.)

Mt Gravatt V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 21: Mt Gravatt 2 – Palm Beach 19 (2014-2024)
Last time they met: Round 2, 2024 – The Lions won by 173 points.
The two clubs first met when the QAFL was formed to underpin the defunct NEAFL. And since that time, it seems astounding that the ledger is so heavily in favour of the Lions. Palm Beach has reached a score of 100+ on 12 occasions, whereas Mt Gravatt has only the two centuries. Five games have resulted in a margin of 2 goals or less – and Palm Beach has won four of those.

Redland Victoria Point V Maroochydore
Played 7: Redland Vic Point 6 - Maroochydore 1 (2021-2024)
Overall 17: Redland Vic Point 8 – Maroochydore 9 (1993-1997, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: Round 8, 2024 – Redland Vic Point won by 48 points.
In the QAFL, Maroochydore is only three points short of an aggregate of 500 against the Sharks (72 – 65 – 497).
The two clubs competed in the BAFL from 1993 to 1997 when the Roos were extremely strong for the competition.

Surfers Paradise V Sherwood
Played 24: Surfers Paradise 11 - Sherwood 13 (2011-2024)
Overall 40: Surfers Paradise 16 – Sherwood 24 (1999-2000, 2005-2008, 2011-2024)
Last time they met: Round 19, 2024 – The Demons won by 69 points.
Surfers Paradise is currently on a seven game winning streak – which matches the fortunes of Sherwood a few years earlier.
It has definitely been a tight tussle in their QAFL years: Surfers Paradise only need 34 points to reach 2,000 against Sherwood – and the Magpies only require 122 to reach 2,000 against the Demons.

Aspley V Wilston Grange
Played 6: Aspley 6 - Wilston Grange 0 (2022-2024)
Overall 27: Aspley 11 – Draw 1 – Wilston Grange 15 (1998-2000, 2002-2008, 2022-2024)
Last time they met: Round 18, 2024 – Aspley won by 36 points.
In the realms of the QAFL, the Gorillas have been stung by the Hornets every time. The closest game between the two occurred in Round 5 last year when Aspley was triumphant by 35 points.
Prior to these past few years, Wilston Grange enjoyed a comprehensive run of successes against Aspley.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am definitely happy to correct any records I have stored.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:

Round 2 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Some potentially useless scraps of local trivia from Round 2:

Noosa 18-8-116 d Labrador 14-7-91
Played 8: Labrador 4 – Noosa 4 (2021-2025)
This score has occurred once previously:
2001 SF1: Northern Eagles 17-14-116 d Broadbeach 14-7-91 (Giffin Park)
The margin of 25 points has now occurred 115 times.

Coorparoo 16-6-102 d Broadbeach 8-17-65
Played 1: Coorparoo 1 – Broadbeach 0 (2025)
This score has occurred twice previously:
1987 R10: Coorparoo 15-12-102 d Sherwood 10-5-65 (Chelmer)
2014 R3: NT Thunder 16-6-102 d Gold Coast Suns 8-17-65 (Metricon – NEAFL)
The margin of 37 points has now occurred 88 times.

Palm Beach Currumbin 29-12-186 d Mt Gravatt 5-6-36
Played 22: Mt Gravatt 2 – Palm Beach 20 (2014-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
Palm Beach has won their past 14 games against Mt Gravatt.
The margin of 150 points has now occurred 4 times.

Redland Victoria Point 11-9-75 d Maroochydore 10-13-73
Played 8: Redland Vic Point 7 - Maroochydore 1 (2021-2025)
Overall 18: Redland Vic Point 9 – Maroochydore 9 (1993-1997, 2021-2025)
This score has occurred twice in QAFL fixtures:
1943 R10: Kedron 11-9-75 d Mayne 10-13-73
1950 R4: Mayne 10-15-75 d Coorparoo 11-7-73
The Sharks have won their past 6 games against the Roos.
The margin of 2 points has now occurred 133 times.

Surfers Paradise 24-7-151 d Sherwood 7-6-48
Played 25: Surfers Paradise 12 - Sherwood 13 (2011-2025)
Overall 41: Surfers Paradise 17 – Sherwood 24 (1999-2000, 2005-2008, 2011-2025)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
Surfers Paradise has won their past 7 games against Sherwood.
The margin of 103 points has now occurred 16 times.

Aspley 15-19-109 d Wilston Grange 4-4-28
Played 7: Aspley 7 - Wilston Grange 0 (2022-2025)
Overall 28: Aspley 12 – Draw 1 – Wilston Grange 15 (1998-2000, 2002-2008, 2022-2025)
This score has occurred once before in QAFL fixtures:
1996 R16: Mt Gravatt 16-13-109 d Kedron Grange 3-10-28
The margin of 81 points has now occurred 33 times.

Generally a very accurate week for the victors.

For anyone interested:

Round 3

Broadbeach V Morningside

Played 71: Broadbeach 26 – Morningside 45 (1997-2024)
Last time they met: R18 2024 – Morningside 22-16-148 d Broadbeach 10-7-67
QAFL Game Number 1498 for Morningside, 515 for Broadbeach.
28 seasons completed, so we have a prominent historical record happening here. There should be more to discuss.
Only five times has the margin been two goals or less. The average margin has been almost 46 points.
Broadbeach is only two goals short of 800 against Morningside.

Noosa V Mt Gravatt
Played 7: Noosa 5 – Mt Gravatt 2 (2021-2024)
Overall 10: Noosa 7 – Mt Gravatt 3 (1993, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: R11 2024 – Noosa 21-14-140 d Mt Gravatt 8-9-57
Closest margin ever between these two clubs in the QAFL realm is 45 points.
I reckon it is extraordinary that these two clubs competed in one season – and then had to wait another 28 years before their paths crossed again.

Palm Beach Currumbin V Labrador
Played 25: Palm Beach 12 – Draw 1 - Labrador 12 (2014-2024)
Overall: Undisclosed – They both competed in the GCAFL before Labrador was promoted, so I estimate this would cover 1965 to 1996
Last time they met: R18 2024 – Palm Beach 16-15-111 d Labrador 16-8-104
Based on their QAFL era, if Palm Beach can win this game by 47 points, then the aggregated scores for both clubs against each other will be equal (290–282–2022 to 303–251–2069). There is only a difference of 18 scoring shots across that record. The Tigers have been more accurate overall.

Sherwood V Maroochydore
Played 11: Sherwood 6 - Maroochydore 5 (2011-2013, 2020-2024)
Overall 15: Sherwood 10 – Maroochydore 5 (2005-2008, 2011-2013, 2020-2024)
Last time they met: R10 2024 – Maroochydore 13-12-90 d Sherwood 10-5-65
Maroochydore has won the last four clashes.
Name changes add complexity to what I’m trying to do. So, a concession: The QAFL numbers above include the 2011 AFLQ Division 1 season when the Western Magpies competed against Maroochy/Northshore.
The Overall tally adds another four years to Western Magpies V Maroochy/Northshore clashes – but because of an abundance of clubs in the AFL Queensland Division 2 (or Pineapple Hotel Cup, as many still prefer to remember it) and not enough rounds, these two clubs only met four times across four seasons. The Magpies got the four points each time.

Surfers Paradise V Redland Victoria Point
Played 7: Surfers Paradise 2 – Redland VP 5 (2021-2024)
Last time they met: EF1 2024 – Redland VP 11-10-76 d Surfers Paradise 8-12-60
About the only thing I can suggest at this time is that the record is probably a lot closer than it looks across this small sample size. Aside from one massive win by the Sharks, the ledger is not too far apart, aside from the fact that the lowest margin ever was still 14 points.

Wilston Grange V Coorparoo
Played 107: Wilston Grange 37 – Draw 2 – Coorparoo 68 (1950-1952, 1955-1989)
Last time they met: R12 1989 – Coorparoo 16-13-109 d Wilston Grange 4-17-41
I don’t mind at all if anyone wants to argue with me on these figures.
It is great to have some big numbers – but what a mixed up, confusing scene our local competitions can be.
Wilston Grange has never played the Kings. However, they have played a massive number of games against the Roos – so that is what I am concentrating on.
The figures above represent:
a) Coorparoo Roos, but not Coorparoo-Yeronga (and if I am going to include the Roos anyway, then maybe I should include the merge team too)
b) Wilston Grange only – but no Kedron Grange results (and I think that is appropriate).
Overall, for the 107 games reviewed, the scores have been Wilston Grange 1358-1413-9561 to Coorparoo 1621-1580-11306.
There have been 93 centuries scored, 37 and 56 respectively.
And 23 times, there has been a margin of 12 points or less.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am definitely happy to correct any records I have stored.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:

Got a question for you Toucan. Any idea which 2 clubs in Qld have played the most games against each other?

Grange v Coorparoo 107 (108 now) pretty impressive. Hard to know I guess with scant records of the old GCAFL and I guess even leagues in places like Townsville potentially with not many teams maybe they play each other 3 times a year H and away plus finals. Can add up pretty quick

2010premier Thanks. Great to get a question - because now I have to consider the answer.

With name changes, and the rise and fall of various clubs, it can make it all very difficult to determine. I've been discussing this with regards to the history of Coorparoo this week - the "current" club is not the "old" club, but it makes the numbers more interesting to include the distant past.

Also, I have a bit of proximity bias. I've got more of a clue about the clubs in SEQ than I do the regional comps throughout the rest of the state. Obviously, for a long rivalry, we need continuity of two clubs in the same competition. If the comps are small, and the two clubs relatively stable, then that rivalry will build big numbers naturally.

I recall I looked at this last year - not sure if I shared anything on BigFooty though.
So, in QAFL circles, I reckon it is Mayne V Kedron. From 1937 to 1989, I've got them meeting 151 times. (Behind them is Mayne V Morningside for 150 games.)

Now we get into a whole argument about what should be included, what to exclude. The number of 151 does not include any games involving Kedron Grange. I know several Wilston Grange people who are adamant that Kedron Grange does not represent any of their history - but what do Kedron people think? If those clashes were included, then we can add another 22 games to that tally.

So if name changes can mess up the comprehension of history, are there any other examples?
Of course, the answer is Yes.
Mayne V Western Districts happened 143 times. But bookending the Bulldogs' history, Mayne V Taringa adds 21 more games, and Mayne V West Brisbane adds 22 games.

Then there is this conundrum:
Mayne V Windsor - 121 games
Mayne V Windsor 2 - 2 games
Mayne V Windsor Zillmere - 81 games
Mayne V North Brisbane - 16 games
Mayne V Northern Eagles - 15 games

It all gets mixed up. I'll have my opinion - but it doesn't mean I'm right. Continuity can be a struggle, particularly across the most recent few decades.

We could also consider Labrador and Broadbeach. I believe they have played each other since 1971. Up to 1996, when they both left the GCAFL to join the QSFL, they would have met across 26 seasons. If we assume that they could have clashed in three fixtures each season (and maybe even four some years), plus add finals to the tally, then it is not too outrageous to expect a total of around 85 games in the GCAFL. Add a further 63 games in the QAFL comps, and we're starting to get very close to the Mayne V Kedron tally.

Noosa V Maroochydore is another worth considering. Their history stretches back to 1970 in the SCAFL. As far as I know, they continued to clash without interruption up until the end of the 1997 BAFL season when the Roos were promoted to the higher comp. Since then, there have many years when the two clubs met - but there were certainly years of interruption too.

I'll stop there. Perhaps someone can suggest some regional rivalries?

Round 3 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Some potentially useless scraps of local trivia from Round 3:

Broadbeach 4-9-33 d Morningside 4-5-29
Played 72: Broadbeach 27 – Morningside 45 (1997-2025)
This should come as no surprise: the combined score of 62 is the lowest between the two clubs, eclipsing the aggregate of 70 points in 1999 (Broadbeach 7-10-52 d Morningside 2-6-18).
This score has occurred twice previously:
1942 SF Replay: Western Districts 3-15-33 d Windsor 4-5-29 (Victoria Park)
1947 SF1: Mayne 5-3-33 d Western Districts 4-5-29 (Windsor Park)
The margin of 4 points has now occurred 140 times.

Noosa 6-19-55 d Mt Gravatt 5-5-35
Played 8: Noosa 6 – Mt Gravatt 2 (2021-2025)
Overall 11: Noosa 8 – Mt Gravatt 3 (1993, 2021-2025)
As above, 90 points is the lowest combined score between the two clubs (previous lowest was 103 points in 2022 – Noosa 13-14-92 d Mt Gravatt 1-5-11)
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 20 points has now occurred 139 times.

Palm Beach Currumbin 19-16-130 d Labrador 8-8-56
Played 26: Palm Beach 13 – Draw 1 - Labrador 12 (2014-2025)
Overall: Undisclosed – They both competed in the GCAFL before Labrador was promoted, so I estimate this would cover 1965 to 1996
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 74 points has now occurred 42 times.

Sherwood 13-6-84 d Maroochydore 8-8-56
Played 12: Sherwood 7 - Maroochydore 5 (2011-2013, 2020-2025)
Overall 16: Sherwood 11 – Maroochydore 5 (2005-2008, 2011-2013, 2020-2025)
This score has occurred three times in QAFL fixtures:
1920 R11: Valley 12-12-84 d South Brisbane 8-8-56 (Perry Park)
2017 R11: Morningside 11-18-84 d Wilston Grange 8-8-56 (Jack Esplen Oval)
2018 R16: Western Magpies 12-12-84 d Labrador 8-8-56 (Cooke-Murphy Oval)
The margin of 28 points has now occurred 105 times.

Redland Vic Point 6-7-43 d Surfers Paradise 5-8-38
Played 8: Surfers Paradise 2 – Redland VP 6 (2021-2025)
And again, this is the lowest combined score (81 points) between the two clubs. The previous low of 136 happened just last year.
This score has occurred once previously in QAFL fixtures:
2023 R20: Broadbeach 6-7-43 d Labrador 5-8-38 (Cooke-Murphy Oval)
The margin of 5 points has now occurred 118 times.

Wilston Grange 10-6-66 d Coorparoo 7-6-48
Disclaimer: I appreciate that the Roos and the Kings represent different Coorparoo clubs - although, listing a series of zeroes is relatively boring, so I will continue to recognise the previous club in these posts, purely for the "entertainment" aspect. However, it is difficult not to consider some form of connection between the two entities when the same name is adopted and the same venue is used.
Played 108: Wilston Grange 38 – Draw 2 – Coorparoo 68 (1950-1952, 1955-1989, 2025)
Or
Played 1: Wilston Grange 1 – Coorparoo 0 (2025)
Either:
This is not the lowest combined score (114) between two teams with the same respective names – that occurred in 1956 at Deagon when Wilston Grange defeated Coorparoo 7-7-49 to 6-8-44 for a combined score of 93.
Or:
This is both the highest and lowest combined score between the two clubs ever!
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 18 points has now occurred 133 times.

Round 4

Coorparoo V Sherwood

Played 0: Coorparoo 0 – Sherwood 0 (0000-0000)
Or:
Played 10: Coorparoo 9 – Sherwood 1 (1983-1987)
(Pick whichever one is more relevant or entertaining for your point of view)
Last time they met: R10 1987 – Coorparoo 15-12-102 d Sherwood 10-5-65
It ought to be well established by now that the Kings do not represent the same club as the long-defunct Roos. The modern club’s origins can be traced back to the BAFL Division 3 club, Treasury, which initially played their games at Yeronga, then Morningside, and now Giffin Park (the Home of the Roos). Coincidentally, they also adopted the same name as the past club. However, they are not the same club – it is only their name, their venue, and their current level of competition that is the same. There is absolutely no correlation of the current club with the past – except for the aspects that are completely the same.
Right, it’s important to get that out of the way. There will be no need for such a caveat each week.
If we were to slyly suggest that there is some form of continuity, then we could also allude to the possibility that Coorparoo is only 34 points short of 1,500 against Sherwood (219-152-1466) – and at the other end of the field, Sherwood needs 125 points to reach 1,000 against Coorparoo (127-113-875).
During the five years the Roos and Magpies previously played each other, Coorparoo was very strong, hence the one-sided ledger. The closest margin ever of 12 points also represents the one victory Sherwood claimed over Coorparoo the Roos.

Aspley V Broadbeach
Played 18: Aspley 6 – Draw 1 – Broadbeach 11 (2009-2013, 2022-2024)
Last time they met: R14 2024 – Broadbeach 14-9-93 d Aspley 13-7-85
The Cats hold a tremendous record against the Hornets. There would not be many clubs with such a lead in results.
Aspley is only 2 points shy of 1,500 against Broadbeach (217-156-1498).
Four of the 18 games have been decided by 2 goals or less, including the 2023 Round 1 draw.

Maroochydore V Noosa
Played 13: Maroochydore 6 – Draw 1 – Noosa 6 (2011-2013, 2021-2024)
Overall: Let’s work through this:
1970-1992 – SCAFL Undisclosed (would be good to find out)
1993-1997 – BAFL 16: Maroochydore 11 – Noosa 5
2005-2010 – AFLQ Div 2 14: Maroochy-North Shore 3 – Noosa 11
2014-2019 – QFA North/Div 1 22: Maroochydore 10 – Noosa 12
Last time they met: R14 2024 – Maroochydore 15-11-101 d Noosa 1-8-14
This game is arguably the closest equivalent to the AFL’s ANZAC Day clash. It (usually) doesn’t matter how either team is travelling, or where they find themselves on the ladder, as when they meet, you can often expect a mighty contest (probably best to ignore that last game though).
We don’t have a significant history at QAFL level yet – but these fixtures have been a frequent event on the Coast since 1970. Perhaps someone can tell me how many times the two clubs have met in a Grand Final.

Redland – Victoria Point V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 8: Redland 6 – Palm Beach 2 (2021-2024)
Last time they met: SF 2024 – Redland 15-13-103 d Palm Beach 11-13-79
The battle of the longest names.
Not a lot to share here – although, given their most recent game was a Final, this will be an intriguing contest.

Labrador V Surfers Paradise
Played 21: Labrador 12 - Surfers Paradise 9 (2014-2024)
Overall: Undisclosed – I reckon they competed against each other from 1965 to 1996 (followed by a long hiatus between 1997 to 2013)
Last time they met: R9 2024 – Labrador 17-8-110 d Surfers Paradise 8-9-57
Another clash where the pre-QAFL history is significant – but also absent. Such a huge amount of information just abandoned. It will take a lot of work to recover the Gold Coast (and Sunshine Coast) pre-21st Century results. I’ll give it a crack one day – but not any time soon. If anyone has already found the info, please let me know.
Labrador has been successful in four of the last six encounters with the Demons.

Morningside V Wilston Grange
Played 123: Morningside 71 – Draw 1 - Wilston Grange 51 (1950, 1953-1989, 2014-2024)
Last time they met: R4 2024 – Morningside 13-12-90 d Wilston Grange 8-13-61
From the perspective of this post, it is brilliant to have two longstanding clubs compete against each other. The number of games played between these two clubs is more than the total games across the other five matches this weekend.
Twenty games have been decided by two goals or less – and the one draw happened way back in 1957 (28 all). Morningside has kicked 56 centuries to Wilston Grange’s 34.
This game will be the Panthers’ 1499th QAFL result game. If not for the postponed Round 1 fixture, they would be chalking up 1,500 this weekend. Of their 1,498 games so far, there has been 763 Wins, 16 Draws, and 719 Losses. (If anyone from AFLQ reads these posts, this could be a story for your website.)
Wilston Grange will also reach a milestone this weekend. This game will bring them equal with Sandgate for Games Played in the QAFL – both clubs will now be on 1,060 games.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am happy to correct any records I have stored.

Enjoy. 🤜:boom:🤛

Thanks Toucan
Brilliant as always, really enjoy these. They should get you to do some historical write ups fir AFLQ.

You probably know more about it but if my memory serves me correctly, a lot of AFLQ historical files were destroyed in a fire some 20/25 years ago. Do you know anything about that?

It may have been GCAFL files

2010premier I've heard stories of a fire back in the 1950s that caused a huge loss of records. However, this would pre-date the Gold Coast comp (which also acted quite independently from the QAFL in any case).
No matter whether it was fire, flood, moving offices, apathy, or plain old mismanagement, a lot of info has been lost along the journey.

Over the weekend, I saw that the "Ultimate Ressie" account on Facebook posted this picture.
1745900659558.jpeg
I'm sure its just a scoreboard error - but it made me wonder:
What is the most number of goals kicked without a minor score (final scores only - that's all I can check)?

It turns out that the best I can find is from 2011, Round 14, in the AFLQ Premier Division when Maroochy/Northshore scored 7 goals straight against perennial rival, Noosa. (Noosa won the game by 8 points.)

I managed to find that Alexandra Hills scored 5 goals 0 behinds against Palm Beach in the AFLSQ Premier Division in 2000.

Nothing else is anything close to the picture!

If we look at single scoreboard blemishes, I have found that Redland scored 12.1 V Broadbeach (2011), and Western Districts scored 11.1 V Kedron (1942).
At SQAFA/BAFL/AFLSQ level, I found that Alexandra Hills kicked 10.1 V Caloundra (1999), and Deagon scored 9.1 V Sherwood (1974).

Does anyone have any other info?

Round 4 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Some potentially useless scraps of local trivia from Round 4:

Sherwood 12-18-90 d Coorparoo 6-4-40
Played 1: Coorparoo 0 – Sherwood 1 (2025)
Or:
Played 11: Coorparoo 9 – Sherwood 2 (1983-1987, 2025)
Your choice. I won’t be put out either way.
This is Coorparoo’s lowest score against Sherwood (or you could also say, it is their highest score too). Across 11 games, it is also the lowest combined score (130).
This score has occurred once previously:
2009 R1: Broadbeach 13-12-90 d Labrador 5-10-40 (Merrimac Oval)
The margin of 50 points has now occurred 78 times.

Aspley 13-10-88 d Broadbeach 7-13-55
Played 19: Aspley 7 – Draw 1 – Broadbeach 11 (2009-2013, 2022-2025)
This score has occurred twice previously:
1955 R13: Coorparoo 12-16-88 d Morningside 8-7-55
1969 R12: Western Districts 12-16-88 d Kedron 7-13-55
The margin of 33 points has now occurred 123 times.

Maroochydore 10-7-67 d Noosa 8-10-58
Played 14: Maroochydore 7 – Draw 1 – Noosa 6 (2011-2013, 2021-2025)
Overall: Based on known games:
Played 67: Maroochydore 32 – Draw 1 – Noosa 34 (1993-1997, 2005-2019, 2021-2025)
1970-1992 – SCAFL Undisclosed (would be good to find out)
Remarkably, this score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 9 points has now occurred 130 times.

Redland - Victoria Point 17-11-113 d Palm Beach Currumbin 5-8-38
Played 9: Redland 7 – Palm Beach 2 (2021-2025)
The Sharks have won the last three encounters.
This is the greatest margin between the two clubs ever.
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 75 points has now occurred 44 times.

Surfers Paradise 13-11-89 d Labrador 3-8-26
Played 22: Labrador 12 - Surfers Paradise 10 (2014-2025)
Overall: Undisclosed – I reckon they competed against each other from 1965 to 1996 (followed by a long hiatus between 1997 to 2013)
The Tigers’ score is the lowest between the two clubs in QAFL fixtures. I was at the Gold Coast on Friday night – I’m surprised the game even happened on Saturday.
This score has never occurred before in QAFL fixtures.
The margin of 63 points has now occurred 53 times.

Morningside 19-9-123 d Wilston Grange 8-10-58
Played 124: Morningside 72 – Draw 1 - Wilston Grange 51 (1950, 1953-1989, 2014-2025)
Okay, time to backpedal a little:
I found out yesterday that Morningside’s Round 1 game against Redland has now been officially abandoned, with both clubs receiving two points. Given that is a “result”, then technically, this game last Saturday represented Morningside’s 1500th fixture result.
So, that’s kinda nice, I guess.
Digging around for something here: The Panthers’ winning margin represents their 25th greatest winning margin against the Gorillas.
Next week, when Wilston Grange play Labrador, it will represent their 1061st result fixture, thereby passing Sandgate to become the club that has had its name placed on the scoreboard the third most times in QAFL-level fixtures (I tried to be very careful how I worded that, so if it seems a clumsy sentence, I think it may still be plausibly correct). They will be behind only Morningside and Mayne now.
This score has occurred twice previously in QAFL fixtures:
2003 R11: Mt Gravatt 18-15-123 d Broadbeach 8-10-58 (Merrimac Oval)
2004 R5: Labrador 19-9-123 d Sherwood 9-4-58 (Cooke-Murphy Oval)
The margin of 65 points has now occurred 47 times.

KUN-NING AROUND THE GOALS
When Kununoppin played host to Yelbeni in their Dampier Football Association clash on June 4, 1932, the home side
was faultless in front of the goals, booting 18.0 to Yelbeni’s 8.13 to win by 47 points. In their next clash at Yelbeni in
July, the straight-kicking ‘Kuno’ was at it again, kicking 13.0 to 4.17.

Family & work commitments took precedence over the past two weeks.
However, I have a Results post for last week to load in just a moment - and then an Intro for Round 6 later today.

Round 5 Results

The Matter that’s Stuff

Some potentially useless scraps of local trivia from Round 5:

Coorparoo 9-14-68 d Mt Gravatt 7-9-51
Played 1: Coorparoo 1 – Mt Gravatt 0 (2025)
There can be no discord about this:
This is the first time that Mt Gravatt and Coorparoo (any form of Coorparoo) have competed against each other in a premiership fixture match.
If we go back to the late 1970s (I’m not sure of the exact year), the SQAFA club, Mt Gravatt, defeated their QAFL opponent, Coorparoo Roos, in a knock-out competition. Given the era, the origins of the two clubs, and possibly the occasionally frosty relationship between the QAFL and SQAFA, this was a monumental result for the Vultures.
But that was Then – and this is Now.
This game will set the baseline for all future clashes between the two clubs.
This score has occurred twice previously:
1943 R4: Coorparoo 9-14-68 d Kedron 7-9-51 (Victoria Park)
2015 R15: NT Thunder 10-8-68 d Aspley 6-15-51 (Graham Road - NEAFL)
The margin of 17 points has now occurred 114 times.

Aspley 13-12-90 d Noosa 10-11-71
Played 5: Aspley 4 – Noosa 1 (2022-2025)
Overall 39: Aspley 12 – Noosa 27 (1993-2008, 2022-2025)
This is Aspley’s lowest winning margin against Noosa in QAFL (previously was 52 points). The Hornets have won the last four encounters.
This score has occurred twice previously:
1970 R19: Windsor Zillmere 13-12-90 d Mayne 10-11-71
2013 R12: Palm Beach 14-6-90 d Wilston Grange 11-5-71 (Hickey Park – SEQAFL)
The margin of 19 points has now occurred 123 times.

Palm Beach Currumbin 15-6-96 d Morningside 8-10-58
Played 22: Palm Beach 8 – Morningside 14 (2014-2025)
The Lions kicked their 250th goal against Morningside in this game (252-240-1752).
The winner of the last six games has alternated between the two clubs.
This score has occurred three times in QAFL fixtures:
1963 R5: Sandgate 14-12-96 d Windsor Zillmere 6-22-58
2002 R9: Northern Eagles 14-12-96 d Broadbeach 8-10-58 (Merrimac Oval)
2022 R17: Aspley 14-12-96 d Labrador 8-10-58 (Graham Road)
The margin of 28 points has now occurred 105 times.

Redland - Victoria Point 10-9-69 d Sherwood 10-7-67
Played 19: Redland 16 – Draw 1 - Sherwood 2 (2001-2004, 2009-2010, 2021-2025)
The Sharks scored their 300th goal against Sherwood in this game (309-276-2130).
The last two games have been decided by a total of 5 points – Sherwood by 3, and now Redland by 2. The scoreline is almost identical to their last encounter, 69 to 66.
This score has occurred three times in QAFL fixtures:
1954 R13: Windsor 10-9-69 d Mayne 10-7-67 (Exhibition Ground)
1961 R9: Morningside 9-15-69 d Windsor 9-13-67 (Merrimac Oval)
2001 R17: Redland 10-9-69 d Brisbane Lions 9-13-67 (Dowling Park)
The margin of 2 points has now occurred 134 times. It is now the 8th most frequent result.

Surfers Paradise 17-6-108 d Broadbeach 9-7-61
Played 20: Surfers Paradise 8 – Broadbeach 12 (2014-2025)
Overall: Undisclosed – I anticipate they have competed against each other from 1971 to 1996 (followed by a long hiatus between 1997 to 2013)
All the notes are related to the Demons:
  • Surfers kicked their 200th QAFL goal against Broadbeach (208-211-1459)
  • This was Surfers’ second highest winning margin against the Cats (the highest being 82 points)
  • The Demons have won the last three encounters.
This score has occurred twice previously:
1988 R3: Mayne 16-12-108 d Sandgate 8-13-61 (Windsor Park)
2005 R18: Labrador 15-18-108 d Broadbeach 8-13-61 (Merrimac Oval)
The margin of 47 points has now occurred 84 times.

Labrador 12-13-85 d Wilston Grange 10-11-71
Played 20: Labrador 15 - Wilston Grange 5 (2014-2025)
This game was the Gorillas 1062nd premiership fixture game. As mentioned last week, this is based on name only (mergers and name changes muddy the water).
I’m trying to find something remarkable about this game. How about:
Four of Grange’s five wins over Labrador have been claimed at Home – so this was a tough one to let slip.
This score has occurred once in QAFL fixtures:
1967 R15: Kedron 12-13-85 d Western Districts 10-11-71
The margin of 14 points has now occurred 110 times.

Round 6

Maroochydore V Labrador

Played 13: Maroochydore 4 – Labrador 9 (1998-1999, 2020-2024)
Last time they met: R11 2024 – Maroochydore 16-9-105 d Labrador 12-13-85
Maroochydore require 86 points to reach 1,000 against Labrador (131-128-914).
The Roos won the last clash, but Labrador were successful in the preceding four clashes.

Broadbeach V Palm Beach Currumbin
Played 24: Broadbeach 9 – Palm Beach 15 (2014-2024)
Overall: Undisclosed – this is a further case of the absence of Gold Coast records (nobody’s at fault, its just the way it is) – but these two clubs have a significant history that extended from 1971 to 1996. It would be great to find this information too (rather than sounding like a broken record each time).
Last time they met: R4 2024 – Palm Beach 14-10-94 d Broadbeach 4-18-42
Similar to the above game, whilst Palm Beach won the last encounter, the Cats were successful in the preceding eight games. At QAFL level, there has been a pattern of “blocks of success”: Palm Beach win the first 5 games, then Broadbeach 1, then the Lions another 9, followed by the Cats with 8 wins.
Broadbeach require 1 goal to reach 250 against Palm Beach (249-278-1772).
And at the other end of the field, Palm Beach require 5 goals to reach 300 against Broadbeach (295-285-2055).

Noosa V Redland – Victoria Point
Played 6:0 Noosa 0 – Redland 6 (2021-2024)
Overall 23: Noosa 7 – Draw 1 – Redland 15 (1993-1999, 2021-2024)
Last time they met: R9 2024 – Redland 23-14-152 d Noosa 10-4-64
These are the two clubs that provided the landmark BAFL Drawn Grand Final of 1999. What a game that was!
Both clubs have trod a different path to reach the QAFL competition together. The history at this level with only six games completed is still at a relatively immature stage.
As an aside, the Sharks will kick their 5000th QAFL goal before the end of the season. Something to keep us all on the edge of our seats!

Aspley V Sherwood
Played 8: Aspley 8 – Sherwood 0 (2009-2010, 2022-2024)
Overall 38: Aspley 8 – Sherwood 30 (1975-1982, 2005-2008-2010, 2022-2024)
Last time they met: R4 2024 – Aspley 20-16-136 d Sherwood 8-9-57
The remarkable point here is that through the SQAFA and AFLQ Division 2 years, Aspley did not achieve their first win over Magpies until 2009 when they both competed in the AFLQ Division 1. And since then, the Hornets have not dropped a game.
Sherwood won the first 30 – and Aspley have won the next 8.
Not a lot of clubs managed to conquer Sherwood in the SQAFA competitions, particularly in their final years.

Surfers Paradise V Mt Gravatt
Played 22: Surfers Paradise 11 – Mt Gravatt 11 (2014-2024)
Last time they met: R10 2024 – Surfers Paradise 30-12-192 d Mt Gravatt 6-3-39
With 11 wins each, the overall score must be quite close. The Demons big win last year pushed the ledger in their favour. Overall, the score is Surfers Paradise 270-233-1853 to Mt Gravatt 257-259-1801.

Coorparoo V Morningside
Played 122: Coorparoo 73 - Draw 1 – Morningside 48 (1948-1950, 1953-1993)
Last time they met: R21 1993 – Morningside 22-12-144 d Coorparoo 12-15-87
It's that time again! Time to suspend your sense of disbelief once more - and just go with the following text.
If we’re talking the Roos (and technically, we’re not), then this harks back to the old Southside Cup clashes.
The ledger above includes Coorparoo-Yeronga results (1953-1954) – but it is a substantial history that might surprise people of how strong the original Coorparoo were for a long period of time.
I looked at something different for this clash:
Centuries: Coorparoo (the old version) has scored 50 tons, whilst Morningside has 47. What I wasn't expecting is that across all these clashes, Coorparoo was only restricted to 50 points or less on 5 occasions.

As usual, if anyone disagrees with any details, or has more information to share, please let me know – I am happy to correct any records I have stored.

Enjoy. :thumbsu:
