Want to take my 4 year old son to a match and was wondering if it is possible to walk in at 3/4 time free of charge at the MCG and Etihad?

I know back some years ago you could at the MCG.

Why dont you just buy a ticket and let your son watch the whole game?

What your suggesting....watch a quarter of footy free of charge.....is the act of a bum.:thumbsu:

and NO you need a pass out to get back in. the gates are wide open at about the 25minute mark or something (thats the earliest i've ever left)

if your son is 4, just say he is under 4 and he gets in for free, get a GA ticket for yourself (costs the least).

Take plenty of snacks and some for of other entertainment for him (Nintendo DS, colouring book etc...)

eventually ween him off the extras

The reason for just a quarter is, and anyone with kids will know, it is far easier to entertain them for 30mins than 2hrs duration of a game. It's about giving them a taste for the game.

Yes you are correct at being able to watch the last quarter of an AFL game for free , a while ago.

The gate staff then as i recall only used to work/get paid up until 3/4 time , then the gate would be thrown open.

Now that we have only 2 (MCG and Etihad) grounds , not like the old Victorian suburban grounds , they keep more of their staff to stay back longer , eg ring the fence on the ground , and because of the security threat "paranoia" they don't open the gates at 3?4 time any more.

I am going back a bit but in the 1980's Victoria Park , Princes Park , Windy Hill , Arden Street , Linton St , Western/Whitten Oval , Kardinia Park , Junction Oval , Lakeside Oval and VFL/Waverly Park and MCG all used to open all gates at 3/4 time.

And yes I did pay to get in to see the games , but as kids we would also wait until 3/4 time and get in for nothing , those were the days , where did they go.

I understand what you are trying to do in introducing you son to small doses of a game , because they don't understand it they easily get bored.

From experience the MCG and Etihad now only open their gates with about 5 or so mins to go in the last quarter.

Hope this helps.

Take him to a VFL game ... check out the ABC telecast, unless you want to see your team play?
Watched a bit of the Gold Coast v Bendigo Bombers from Bendigo, 70s setting with some very talented* young blokes strutting their stuff.

* talented: Jay Neagle?

Two years ago I used to live in the apartment building which is next door to Etihad and the gates would always open at 3/4 time. I'd go down to see the final quarter of play once or twice a week if I had nothing to do.

No need to act like such a rude jerk. :thumbsd:

OP is just being realistic about how long a 4 year old will last first time at the footy - about 5 minutes.

You could always just watch the first quarter or half then leave? He'll get to see the players up close while they warm up and he'll get to hear the song and you can listen to the rest of the game on the radio on the drive home.

Andrew Dimwittio make this change?

Wouldn't be surprised.:thumbsd:

Hmm.. letting in people for free at 3/4 time is amateur hour anyway. Secondly, how many people can honestly say they still do this? A concept for a bygone era. Let it stay there
