Just interesting to know how long you spend checking out other posts rather than doing what you want to do. What is the time ratio spent checking up on every one and doing your own thing

How time consuming is it and do you guys work full time

Do you get to the suspect posts yourselves or rely on others reporting them

I read every post on the Adelaide Board (and sub-boards) and the Drafts & Trading Board (and sub-board), plus the Moderators Board. I also check the main board regularly, but only the threads which really interest me.

This takes me about the same time as it does for you and all the other board members. Yes, I work full-time, but I probably spend over an hour per day reading & posting on BF while I'm at work. I probably spend the same amount of time again reading & posting at home in the evenings. Most days I don't have to take any action at all - but when the trolls attack late on a Sunday night we can find ourselves busier than a one-legged man at a butt-kicking contest.

If I find something objectionable I am more than happy to take the appropriate action without waiting for someone else to report it. The emails alerting me to reports go to my work email address, so I don't see any weekend reports until Monday unless I visit the Reports & Infractions section on the Moderators board anyway. Sometimes the reports highlight something I missed, but most of the time one of the mods cleans things up before they even get reported.

I have found myself posting slightly less on the boards as a result of the modship. These days I tend to look at posts with a critical eye, considering whether they're in keeping with the spirit & rules of the board - and less thinking about the actual content. That said, I do still try to contribute whenever I find something which interests me, or whenever I come up with something interesting for starting a new topic of discussion.

It's worth noting that we don't act in isolation. There's a thread on another board, moderator access only, where we discuss the goings on on the board, problems with certain posters and letting each other know if we're going to be offline for a lengthy period of time.

I always take every report seriously. That's not to say that I always take the actions sought by the person doing the reporting. I will look at the reported post, the reasons why it was reported and I will make an assessment of my own. Sometimes the result is deeming the report to be not worthy of further action, sometimes it involves handing out infractions and mass pruning of threads. If no action is taken I will usually send the reporter a PM to let them know my reasons.

Hope this helps.

My experience is very similar to Vader's (though I've been here for considerably less time). I try to read every post whenever possible, or if I'm going to be short on time maybe I'll leave a couple of big threads for later, but generally I read every post. I used to do that anyway though, so it's not an issue. Probably the only thing that can be a drag to go through are the big gameday threads when I'm not involved with them because they can be enormous, and the postmatch bitch sessions when we lose, which I often used to avoid. Both because they're enormous, and because tempers are often flying.

I don't work full time as such but I'm a full time PhD student. I'll usually sit down at Uni for the day and, for example, start to work on a piece of computer code, and will generally do 5 minutes work, then a couple minutes reading/posting, then 5 more minutes work, etc. To be honest I probably don't do as much work as I should, but I've always been that way. If I wasn't on BF I'd be doing mucking around somewhere else

I post slightly less than I would have too, but in my case it's probably more because I'm prone to just posting crap and I don't want to set a bad example as a mod  I already post too many contentless posts. I also have a bad habit of posting from the hip without actually checking if what I'm saying is actually right and being a mod people recognise me enough to call me out on it ;) Anything big or with substance that I would have posted before still gets posted. When I'm not at Uni Bigfooty is kind of like music for me, I have it open and whenever I have a break between whatever I'm doing I quickly refresh it and see if there's anything there. So I'm basically online and reading the whole day, but only for extended periods of time for an hour or so a day. I do also check out opposition team boards (usually whatever team the Crows are playing that week) and the main boards, D/T boards and Bay 13. Though mostly I only post on Bay 13 when somebody is such an idiot that I can point it out without having to lean out the bandwagon too far :p

I probably only have delete/infract/whatever someone/something every couple of days but often you get a lot of them at once. I spend a lot more time PMing people to discuss it than anything else.

I almost never work from reports just because it always seems by the time I see the report it's already been dealt with, Vader and NN are so bloody quick :D

nonsense, should be more of it. that's why we like you. :)

You just like it because when I fence-sit I don't give you any oppurtunity to attack my point of view! ;)

It's more when I go to post something like "Bock gets more possessions than any other CHB in the past decade" and then realise that I actually don't really know that at all and I'm just making shit up

you don't fence sit, though sometimes you try to. its not long before you fall off. :D

did you really say that? I must have missed it. you're just asking to be spanked for that. hang on, is this one of those fetish things? :p

I can be a fence sitter when I don't have a strong opinion about something, that just doesn't happen often enough ;)

I just thought about saying it, then I thought better :p See, this mod gig has taught me to actually read what I've written before I hit post!!

Thanks the main reason i ask is i dont get half the time on the computer i would like so hence i dont get enough time for things like big footy.I notice on Port board Ford Fairlane has plenty of threads and posts so surley he must be retired or only working part time so i am jelous of some one like him.

With work sleep and my time at Lockleys and running the works footy tips i only get on here Fridays and some Wednesdays for any long periods of time i have always wondered what it would be like to be a Mod but only for a day bit like Grand Kids good to have them but good to give them back.

I probably spend too much time on BF as a whole but it doesnt take too long to read through all the posts you have to. Its not an imposition as on the Port board id be reading the posts anyway. Hasnt been too many dramas over there this year compared to other years, which sometimes took a hell of a lot of time to sort out, particularly through PMs.

Was working full time when I started as a mod and was able to have a sneaky look at work when I was in front of a computer all day. Now I work part time and study part time. BF is a major procrastination tool whilst studying (sounds like stabby knows the score there!). Dont look at it at my job, mainly because my work doesnt really involve computer work anymore plus the computer they have would be the slowest computer in circulation in the world by a long long way (can sometimes take 5 minutes to load internet explorer for example).

Depends on when the posts are written really. Probably 50/50.

I pity you mods who have to read all of the drivel posted here, including my own rubbish.

I know how it feels though. I was (and still am) a mod for the official forum of a certain high profile female tennis player. The amount of smut that would be deleted almost made it a full time job. Some of it was actually pretty funny too, but didn't reflect too well on the individual.

The hardest thing when becoming a mod is to be objectively critical of posts or posters.

A mod or two could use a bit of schooling in that regard.

I do understand though, moderating forums has been a part of my work in the past, rather than just a sneaky work day distraction ;)
