Hey guys, KC here.

Do you have a loved one or significant other?

Are you married or have a girlfriend?

Kids? Parents?

If so, does this loved one realise that you believe love is the result of a chemical reaction in your brain....and nothing more?

Therefore, Atheists must consider love meaningless if it is only the result of evolution?

Do you believe Love is the cause or the effect?

Hi Kevin, evo here

You really suck at clear thinking. In Bigfooty speak: Non Sequitur board!

You guys do know that to learn proper knowledge of an issue you have to to understand cause and effect?

Why all hostile?

I don't understand your position.

Because people are of the perspective that things are material instead of ephemeral, how does that make them any less relevant?

Well, many Atheists identify Love outside the normal scientific process, yet throw God out in the same way. Strange, eh?

It's easy peasy for them to defend their love for people yet they deny their own faith of science to prove it.

I don't understand your position here.

What are you trying to say?

Love is meaningless because it is a result of evolution?

My life is a result of evolution, and I certainly don't consider it to be meaningless. My life has meaning through the relationships I have, and the way I have impacted on the lives of others. Love is part of life.

Just because I don't believe in a omnipotent puppet master pulling on the strings above, does not mean I think life or love is meaningless.

If you think Love would be meaningless without religion, then I pity you, as you have obviously never experienced true love.

^^What he said.

I'm no atheist, but who gives a shit what other people do/don't believe. As for love-what the hell does this have to do with Religion?

What a well thought out reply.

The question remains, why should love mean anything to an Atheist if it is simply a chemical reaction and result of evolution.

What do you mean by meaning?

It still has a meaning. We have it because it was an evolutionary advantage.

How do you not see the meaning?

Could ask you the same question. The science/source is exactly the same in all cases.

KC, I'm not sure what it is that you're saying here. Identifying where something comes from doesn't make it meaningless. I could give you the same question with a theistic explanation instead.

If so, does this loved one realise that you believe love is the result of a god programming it into your soul....and nothing more?

A ridiculous idiotic thread.

I was brought up a Catholic but lapsed many years ago.

I would describe myself as a humanist now but I am married to a woman that would still describe herself as a catholic.

I am still as capable of love now as I was when I was a catholic and I believe my wife is too. Love is not the sole domain of aetheists or theists.

Love is a beautiful thing and should not be sullied by cheap point scoring.

WCE nailed it on the previous page.

However Life/Love/etc is as meanful/meaningless as our human mind cares to give it.

Outside the human mind, in the big picture, everything is meaningless whether we like to admit it or not.

Assuming one day the universe dies out, nothing will matter. Do the best you can while you can I reckon.

Because if one believes the Atheist explanation, then it is quite meaningless as you could hook up with anybody and the chemical reaction will eventually happen.

How often on these boards have those with faith been questioned with the notion that if there isn't empirical evidence of something it can't be proven?

Yet with Love, they abandon those principals.

Anyway, it has gone over most people's heads in this thread. That happens far too often when Atheists discuss religion on bigfooty, so it's not a new thing.

Scientific study is, while sometimes useful, the most part empty of passion.

Pain is simply a chemical reaction in the brain to stimuli, but that doesn't make it any less real. Same can be said of love, fear, hate, faith. All can be wittled down to synapes firing, but that shouldn't detract from their importance to humans, regardless of (a)theism.

Clever troll nonetheless KC, very thought provoking:)

I don't believe in God. I have friends. I am friends with them because I find something in common with them. Some of them are funny people, some I share the same political leanings with. Most love a beer.

I have loved before. I've been loved. I met a girl once and thought we shared alot of things in common. THE SEX WAS GOOD. She realised she found even more in common with a previous boyfriend, and left me feeling like a skidmark for quite a while.

Emotions, Kev. Attachment. Sympathy. Humour. Even the bad stuff. I haven't felt all these things because of God. I've felt them because we evolved that way, and with with self-awareness.

We label things, us humans. We identify why things happen.

As humanity progresses I believe its the light of scientific understanding that will illuminate what religions still casts a shadow over.

In prehistoric times early man had to invent stories to explain how things were. That river got divided because a giant fell over. Some monster died and his tooth became Mt Everest.

Where there was a lack of scientific understanding, superstition created shadows. Geological processes have always been there - we just didn't have a name for them.

We wondered about emotions till we gave it a name

We're both at a David Copperfield show Kevin, I'm standing up and applauding "Great illusion David, you are a fantastic entertainer".

You are running around screaming "THE BUILDING, IT'S GONE, WHERE DID IT GO??? IT'S MAGIC!!!"

Just becase I don't believe the love really is magic, doesn't mean I don't enjoy the experience.
